Kwara, Jhpiego Strengthen Integrated Healthcare Services Through SBC Training

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strengthening integrated healthcare service delivery across the state in order to promote healthy living and safeguard residents against communicable diseases.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, represented by the State AIDS Programme Coordinator, Dr. Muhammad Rasheed, made this known on Monday at the opening ceremony of a three-day training workshop organised by Jhpiego in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

She explained that the programme was organized under the Advancing integrated health services delivery for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Communicable Diseases in Nigeria Project.

The training, themed Social and Behaviour Change (SBC), was organised to equip health workers and stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and strategies to improve quality healthcare delivery at Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.

Dr. El-Imam described the programme as timely, impactful, and crucial to the state government’s vision of building more responsive, accessible, and people-oriented healthcare system.

She noted that the present administration remains committed to policies and programmes that will improve access to quality healthcare services, especially for vulnerable groups, adolescents, women, and rural dwellers.

The Commissioner further stressed the importance of integrated healthcare services in tackling communicable diseases and reducing preventable deaths, while also promoting reproductive health and overall community wellbeing.

She commended Jhpiego for partnering with the state government in advancing healthcare delivery and capacity building for health professionals, urging participants to take full advantage of the training by paying close attention to every aspect of the programme.

According to her, the knowledge gained during the workshop would greatly enhance service delivery at healthcare facilities and contribute meaningfully to the attainment of better health outcomes for residents of the state.

Speaking during the workshop, the State Team Lead of Jhpiego, Williams Awotunde, stressed the need for integrated healthcare services for Nigerians accessing care through Primary Healthcare Centres.

He explained that the training was designed to ensure that vulnerable groups, adolescents, and young people have access to comprehensive healthcare services at any Primary Healthcare Centre.

He added that communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, malaria, sexually transmitted infections, as well as antenatal care and family planning services are to be given priority.

Awotunde further disclosed that similar programmes are simultaneously taking place in Anambra, Gombe, Ebonyi, and Kwara states, noting that Asa, Moro, and Offa Local Government Areas were carefully selected in Kwara, with five healthcare facilities chosen in each council area for the programme.

Also speaking, the State Health Educator, Kwara State Ministry of Health, Jibril AbdulKarim, identified socio-cultural, physical, economic, and health system barriers as major factors hindering social behavioural change among the people.

He noted that solutions to such barriers must be people-centred through proper understanding of the common beliefs and realities of the people.

In her remarks, the Community Engagement Officer of Jhpiego, Sharon Gabriel, listed six determinants of social behavioural change to include; knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, social norms, emotions, and environmental factors.

She called for positive attitudinal change to encourage acceptance of integrated healthcare services through what she described as the “behavioural change.”

I feel so grateful, so fulfilled and so blessed to witness the registration and data capturing exercise for 100 scholarship beneficiaries admitted into the Community Midwifery Programme.

This was on a visit to the Kwara State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Ilorin, where the Kwara State Ministry of Health registered them under the European Union Strengthening Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (EU-SARAH) Initiative.

The fully-funded scholarship programme is a strategic intervention aimed at increasing the number of skilled birth attendants in Kwara state. This program will change the lives of these young girls, and improve access to quality maternal and child healthcare services, particularly in underserved communities across Kwara State.

We rigorously selected the beneficiaries through a transparent process across several Local Government Areas. They will undergo a two-year Community Midwifery training programme after which they are expected to contribute meaningfully to skilled deliveries within their communities.

During the visit, i inspected key training facilities including classrooms, hostel accommodations, and learning environments to ensure conducive conditions for effective teaching and student welfare.

This initiative reflects the strong commitment of the Kwara State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq CON, towards strengthening healthcare delivery through strategic investments and partnerships that boost human resource development.

I commend the European Union in Nigeria SARAH Initiative and their development partners UNFPA for their continued support in building a resilient, responsive, and people-centred health system in Kwara State.

This truly warms my heart. This is impact. Alhamdulillah 😊

It was a delight and honour to deliver my keynote address at the official flag-off of the rollout of a free long-acting HIV prevention injection in Kwara State, held at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), Ilorin.

The introduction of Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injectable for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), marks a significant milestone in our HIV response. It provides a more convenient and effective alternative to daily oral prevention, particularly for individuals at substantial risk of HIV infection.

In my remarks, I noted that while Kwara State Government has made commendable progress in expanding access to HIV testing and treatment, gaps remain in prevention, especially among key and vulnerable populations. This intervention is therefore a critical step towards closing those gaps and accelerating progress towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

The rollout also addresses stigma often associated with daily medication, offering a more discreet option that supports adherence and improves access to preventive services.

I encouraged eligible residents to take advantage of this free service available at designated public health facilities across the state, while also emphasising the need to continue other preventive measures.

This initiative aligns with national priorities and reinforces Kwara State’s position as one of the pilot states leading the adoption of innovative, evidence-based approaches to HIV prevention.

I acknowledge and appreciate our valued partners, including Society for Family Health, Nigeria, and other implementing partners for their sustained support and collaboration in strengthening HIV prevention and control efforts in the state.

I appreciate His Excellency, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq CON, for his leadership and sustained commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and advancing public health outcomes in Kwara State.

It was an honour to deliver my keynote address at the commemoration of World Malaria Day held at Peace Hotel, Tanke, Ilorin.

In line with this year’s theme “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must,” I highlighted ongoing efforts of the Kwara State Government in strengthening malaria control, including sustained free malaria testing and treatment services across selected public health facilities, provision of Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits, Artemether-Lumefantrine for uncomplicated cases, and IV Artesunate for severe malaria.

I also announced the planned distribution of 2 million Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets (LLINs) across all 16 Local Government Areas, as well as the upcoming Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SPAQ) campaign for children aged 3–59 months beginning June 2026.

I further noted the state’s progress in malaria prevention, including the distribution of Sulfadoxine Pyrimethamine for prevention in pregnancy across over 350 public health facilities, achieved through sustained collaboration with key development partners such as the World Health Organization, the Global Fund, and other implementing partners supporting malaria control efforts in the state.

These achievements reflect the sustained commitment of the Kwara State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON, whose continued support and strategic investments in the health sector have significantly strengthened malaria control efforts and improved health outcomes across the state.

I sincerely appreciate His Excellency for his unwavering commitment and for the opportunity to serve our dear state.

Together, we remain focused on eliminating malaria and building a healthier Kwara State.
