COCKROACHES!

Cockroaches are disgusting – no one wants them in their home, let alone their kitchen where their food is kept. But how do you stop cockroaches from destroying your kitchen without spraying dangerous toxic chemicals everywhere?
Lets keep reading!

Why Are Cockroaches In My Cabinets?

You'll often find cockroaches in kitchen cabinets, especially if they happen to be under the sink. But why do roaches love these environments so much?
• Roaches love dark, closed spaces
• Your cabinet is a source of food & water
• There are multiple potential food sources
• They're nocturnal (kitchens are normally empty at night)
• Crumbs & small spills are common
• You don't come into contact with your cabinets too much
When it comes to cockroaches, cabinets are like amazing grocery stores full of things for them to eat and drink.

If you've got a roach problem that keeps coming back, check that you're keeping your kitchen cabinets clean and in good order so that the problem doesn't keep returning.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches in Kitchen Cabinets

There are many different ways to get rid of cockroaches in kitchen or get rid of cockroaches from your home for good. Just remember that it's best to use preventative measures with long-term solutions over short-term kills that don't help you with your cockroach infestation in the long run. These cockroaches in kitchen at night can multiply and leave behind nasty dropping and other diseases if you do not take the proper steps to get rid of them, so without further ado..

Here are 9 ways to get rid of cockroaches from your kitchen cabinets!

1. Borax Powder
Borax Powder is a common home cleaning product that is used in kitchens to help reduce mildew, mold, and other common kitchen cabinet problems.
However, Borax Powder can also help to kill insects like ants and it may help to exterminate cockroaches too.
If you're having problems with roaches, try emptying out of your kitchen cabinets, cleaning them with Borax Powder thoroughly, and then putting everything back.

2. Glue Traps
Ever wondered how to how to get rid of small cockroaches in kitchen cabinets? Glue traps don't necessarily make the roaches go away, but it can help you to monitor the amount of roaches left in your home.
Glue traps are best used in conjunction with other pest control methods to see whether they're working or not. If you find a dead cockroach stuck in your glue trap, then you need to continue your roach killing methods or try something more effective.
If a roach gets stuck on the glue trap, it will usually die from starvation by the time you find it.

3. Cimexa Dust
Cimexa dust (or powder) is an insectide products use for bug, insect, and roach infestations.
This dust is a great solution because the effects are physical, not chemical. This means that you can spread it around your house and kitchen cabinets without it causing toxic substances to get into the air.
The dust damages the exoskeleton of the cockroaches, essentially causing them to dry up and die. This dust can kill insects and roaches for many years – lasting up to 10 years in some cases.
Spread this evenly around the cracks and crevices of your home, especially around the cabinetry and kitchen sink. Roaches will avoid it if it's spread unevenly, so ensure it's evenly coating your cracks and crevices without being patchy.

4. Bay Leaves
Bay leaves are commonly used for bug and insect problems – many pests and insects hate the smell of the essential oils that these leaves naturally release.
This natural method of controlling insects may work for some pests, though it's suggested that the smell isn't strong enough to make cockroaches go away.
Either way, it's worth putting a few bay leaves around the home and in your kitchen cabinets – they smell just fine to humans.

5. Aerosol Pesticide & Vacuum Cleaner
This is a great way to make sure you eliminate cockroaches that are in hiding places, but it's a little tricky and is best done with 2 people if possible.
1. First get an aerosol pesticide that works on infant and adult cockroaches. Get one that has a straw attachment, similar to a can of compressed air.
2. Spray the pesticide into cracks, crevices, and hiding places where you suspect roaches to be hiding. As they come out, immediately hoover them up with a vacuum cleaner. You might want a second person standing by with the vacuum cleaner, as roaches can scurry out of these areas very quickly.
3. Ideally, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter installed – cockroaches carry allergens and disease pathogens that we don't want to compromise our vacuum cleaner!
6. Cockroach Killer Sprays
When you think cockroach infestation, you probably think cockroach killer spray.

There are many cockroach killing products you can buy from grocery stores, and most of them will indeed do the trick.
However, you need to be careful spraying these products around your home – many are toxic and dangerous to inhale, especially if you have pets or young children.
You should also be careful when spraying these products close to food sources in your kitchen cabinets – you don't want to get food poisoning because you accidentally sprayed insecticide into your food items.

7. Soap & Water Spray
While it's not a permanent solution, this simple trick is great for killing roaches when you see them appear.
Simply mix together dish soap and water in a spray bottle, making sure there is plenty of soap in the water. Then spray the mixture onto the roaches directly – the soap should clog their breathing pores and cause them to suffocate and die quickly.
It's a bit cruel, but it's one way to help reduce a cockroach infestation.
8. Boric Acid

Try using boric acid dust to kill the roaches plaguing your home. Lay some boric acid powder around the kitchen cabinets, crevices, and surfaces that the roaches like to walk over.
This insecticide gets on their bodies and as they try to clean themselves, they will ingest the boric acid and eventually die.
It's a simple way of killing cockroaches if you'd prefer to not see it happen in front of you or do it personally.

9. Gel Cockroach Baits
Gel-based cockroach baits are very, very useful for getting rid of cockroaches in your kitchen cabinets and other areas of your home.
Dab the cockroach bait in several spots along the bottom of your kitchen cabinet, under the sink, and other areas you think they may be hiding.

Gel bait is best because it's not a dust or aerosel that easily spreads to your food items and ruins them – it stays contained as a gel. You can also put gel bait on a piece of paper or card to make cleanup even easier.
Regularly come back to check whether your cockroach bait has been taken – replace it if it has. If you find that the cockroach bait isn't attracting the roaches, try different brands with different formulations until you find one that they like.

Once one cockroach gets the bait, it will steadily spread it to the others. Cockroaches eat vomit, body parts, and each other, so they can quickly spread the poison among themselves despite only one cockroach eating the original bait.
Tips on How to Get Rid of Cockroaches in Your Home
While killing roaches is an obvious way to make them disappear, there are additional things you can do to spot a roach infestation, stop it in its tracks, and stop an infestation from happening again in the future.
LYTE'S TIPS IN DEALING WITH COCKROACHES!
Here are our best tips for dealing with roaches in your cabinets!

1. Look at your cracks and crevices with a flashlight

Roaches love the dark, which is great because it helps them to fly under your radar and hide more easily. When inspecting your place for cockroaches, be sure to look down cracks and crevices with a flashlight to spot any roaches that are hiding particularly well.
You might be surprised how well a roach can hide in the dark.
2. Check your kitchen cabinet at night

Cockroaches are nocturnal, so you're more likely to find them at night than in the middle of the day.
If you're suspicious that you've got a cockroach infestation but you're not sure, very quietly tiptoe into your kitchen late at night and check then.
If you've got a roach problem, you're more likely to spot them at night.

3. Use compressed air to flush them out
Similar to the aerosol insecticide method we mentioned earlier, use a can of compressed air with a straw to help flish the roaches out from behind your sink, kitchen cabinets, any other similar areas in your house.
This is an easy way to check whether you have a cockroach infestation in certain areas, but be prepared for the possibility of them scurrying out quickly! Remember to always clean cabinets after roaches have been killed!

4.Check under ovens, fridges, and large appliances
If you're having a hard time finding your cockroaches, be sure to check under large appliances like ovens and fridges as well as your kitchen cabinets and under your sink.
Cockroaches love dark, secluded spaces, and these areas tend to have a lot of leftover food particles and nutritious debris that they can eat.

5. Use airtight containers to store food
Cockroaches need food and water to survive, just like everything else.
Buy airtight containers to store your food in within your kitchen cabinets, thereby eliminating access to food items for the cockroach.
If you do this and clean up stray crumbs and spills, they'll soon run out of food to eat and move elsewhere or starve to death.
Don't forget to clean up pet food too!
Pet food, whether it's dog food or cat food, is just as appetizing to a cockroach as human food is.
Even better, we often leave pet's food in bowls on the floor unattended for long periods of time. This is especially true for cat food – as cats tend to eat their meal gradually over the course of several hours.

6.Make sure you clean up your pet's food and their water bowls regularly.

7. Seal up your cracks and crevices
If you can, consider sealing up the areas if your house, walls, and cabinets where cockroaches can easily get in. Cracks and holes in your walls can be the sign of an infestation, so consider caulking them up or using some kind of filler to plug them up again.
If the cockroaches can't get in your house, they can't cause you any problems.

8.Seal your garbage
If you have a garbage can in your kitchen, make sure that it's sealed up and airtight – look for garbage cans with lids that close, keeping the smell of rotting food firmly inside the bin so that cockroaches and other pests don't smell it and come rushing to your kitchen.
On top of that, ensure that you change your garbage regularly so that food isn't rotting away in there for too long.

9. Clean up spills and crumbs quickly
We commonly spill things and get little crumbs in our cabinets that we may not even notice because they're so small.

However, cockroaches and insects do notice.
Whenever you see a spill or crumbs in your kitchen – no matter where – be sure to clean it up quickly before it attracts bugs and roaches.
The less spilled food and drinks in your cabinets, the more likely you can avoid an infestation because there's nothing to attract the cockroaches in the first place.

10. Fix leaky pipes
Without water, cockroaches will die just like any other creature. They have to be getting that water from somewhere, and chances are you may have a leaky pipe under your sink cabinets.
If this is the case, fix the leak ASAP to eliminate a key source of water for the cockroaches giving you problems.
It might not make them go away entirely, but it will make it much more difficult for them to survive every day.
11. Call a pest control professional
If you've tried all of these solutions for getting rid of roaches but nothing is working, it may be time to call in a pest control professional team that can help you to get your life back on track without cockroaches in the picture.
While professional pest control services can be intrusive and annoying, you might need to call up your local insect-killing place if all else fails.
At least you'll be in the hands of a professional who can spot the sign of entry and exit points, kill the existing roaches, and stop more roaches from coming back in the future. It's expensive, but it's worth it for a large-scale cockroach problem.

The Bottom Line – Cockroaches Don't Belong In Cabinets
Cockroaches love your kitchen's cabinets, which is not good news for many homeowners in roach-prone areas. However, if you follow these tips and tricks, you might be able to solve your roach problem for good.
It's important to remember that killing one or two cockroaches isn't always the best way to end a long-term roach problem. Try to use systematic methods that stop roaches from being able to come back once they're gone.
That's the best way to stop future infestations.

PUFFY PLANTAIN BALLS!
Before delving into the “how to do” it’s important I answer some important questions that would most likely bring us to the perfect tasty plantain balls!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)

1. WHICH PLANTAINS TO USE?
To get the most out of your plantain balls, I highly recommend purchasing the following below:
• Yellow Ripe Plantain – These are great because they add a natural sweetness. However, they will not provide the crispy outer layer. They will be soft and chewy; but as equally delicious.

• Green / Yellow Plantains – I recommend getting the plantains that are in between if you are going for a crunchy outer layer. Use the plantains that are slightly green and yellow. These “in between” colored plantains will hold firm when processed in the food processor.
• Green Plantains – They are perfect for deep frying; however, they are very grainy when they are not cooked. If your plantains are too green, I recommend leaving them out on the counter for a few days until they start to turn yellow or mildly yellow. These will need to be crumbled in the food processor as it will be too tough to mash with a fork.

2. WHY DO YOU SOAK PLANTAINS?
Soaking plantains helps the skin to soften up and make it easier for you to peel.

3. WHAT CAN I DO WITH REALLY RIPE PLANTAINS?
Ripe plantains are great for desserts or bread.

RODENTS!
Rats and mice are primarily nocturnal, and are excellent climbers. Because rodents do not have a collarbone, they can squeeze themselves into extremely small openings to enter your building. Inside a facility, nests can be found in storage boxes, wall voids, attics, roofs, crawlspaces, basements, and sewers.
Rodents are attracted to certain common conditions of kitchens, including:

• Warmth
• Plentiful stock of food and water
• Poor sanitation/food debris
• Wide variety of locations for nesting and reproduction

Rodents can impact kitchens with a number of potential hazards and threats, such as:

• Urine and f***s can contaminate food and water.

• Transmission of diseases/food-borne illnesses. Rodents are capable of spreading over 100 dangerous pathogens. A few of which are the Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Leptospirosis, and Salmonella.

• Carry smaller pests (fleas, mites, ticks, lice, etc.) which also carry disease.

• Considerable damage to building, equipment, and food containers by gnawing.

• Will quickly deplete your stock of food.

GETTING RID OF RODENTS!
How do you get rid of all the rodents disturbing?
• Clean
• Clean up
• Keep cleaning
• Continue to clean all shelves, cabinets, slabs etc.
• Set traps
• Fumigate(rodenticides)
• Package food stuff in clean spaces.
• Wash dirty dishes.
• Keep cleaning
• Close all holes
• Keep cleaning!
• Continue your sanitation!

Onions
Onions add to its sweetness. I prefer to use the red onions as far as Jollof Rice is concerned, l just love the taste and the flavour it gives to the Jollof Rice. The white onions are completely fine too if that’s what is available to you.

Tomato paste
In addition to making the Jollof Rice colourful, tomato paste plays a vital role and also add to it’s richness.

Now that I’ve given you guys some tips about Nigerian Jollof Rice, let’s get the work started. In the same vein, let me quickly introduce other ingredients and the method I’m talking about.

Preparation Method For Nigerian Jollof Rice
INGREDIENTS:

• 4 cups long (basmati or normal) Rice

• 1 small seize ginger
• 2 garlic cloves
• 50 grams butter/margarine

Instructions

Before the real cooking starts, it is advisable to do some prep and to get all the ingredients readily available.

• Wash and blend together, the tomatoes, red ball pepper, scotch bonnet pepper, 1 onion, ginger and the garlic cloves.

8. At this juncture, the rice should be soft and tender. Stir well to the bottom of the pot with a knife or turning stick ( I prefer knife, sometimes the turning stick breaks the rice in the process of turning)
9. Cover and increase the heat for about 5 minutes and allow the rice to burn for the authentic Jollof party taste.
10. Turn off the heat and turn again to the bottom of the pot.
11. Remove from the heat, your smoky party Jollof Rice is ready.
12. Enjoy while still warm with any chilled drink of your choice and thank me later!

THE HONEY!
Honey is a sweet liquid made by bees using nectar from flowers. People throughout the world have hailed the health benefits of honey for thousands of years.

There are a few other examples of foods that keep–indefinitely–in their raw state: salt, sugar, dried rice are a few. But there’s something about honey; it can remain preserved in a completely edible form, and while you wouldn’t want to chow down on raw rice or straight salt, one could ostensibly dip into a thousand year old jar of honey and enjoy it, without preparation, as if it were a day old. Moreover, honey’s longevity lends it other properties–mainly medicinal–that other resilient foods don’t have. Which raises the question–what exactly makes honey such a special food?
The answer is as complex as honey’s flavor–you don’t get a food source with no expiration date without a whole slew of factors working in perfect harmony.

The first comes from the chemical make-up of honey itself. Honey is, first and foremost, a sugar. Sugars are hygroscopic, a term that means they contain very little water in their natural state but can readily suck in moisture if left unsealed. “Honey in its natural form is very low moisture. Very few bacteria or microorganisms can survive in an environment like that, they just die. They’re smothered by it, essentially.” What Harris points out represents an important feature of honey’s longevity: for honey to spoil, there needs to be something inside of it that can spoil. With such an inhospitable environment, organisms can’t survive long enough within the jar of honey to have the chance to spoil.

This durability is thanks to the unique features of honey: it is low in water and high in sugar, so bacteria cannot grow on it. Honey also contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, which inhibits growth of microbes. This is partly why bees produce it for the young in their hives – it is both food and protection.

Processing honey also helps as the sugars in honey are hygroscopic and tend to draw in atmospheric water, which is not ideal. However, during processing and packaging, the heat treatment first removes water and then airtight lids keeps the water out, helping it keep for longer. Although honey can go cloudy and crystallise when opened as the sugars draw in water again, this physical change can be reversed by simply warming the honey.

MEDICINAL USE.

A 2012 review highlights that in Ayurvedic medicine, honey is used to treat the following wide array of illnesses, ailments, and injuries — whether it is mixed with other remedies and consumed or applied to the skin.
• hiccups
• stress
• weakness
• bed wetting and frequent urination
• bad breath
• the effects of hangovers
• teething pain in babies older than 1 year
• eczema and dermatitis
• burns, cuts, and wounds
• coughs and asthma
• sleep disturbances
• vision problems
• stomach ulcers
• diarrhea and dysentery
• vomiting
• high blood pressure
• obesity
• jaundice
• arthritis
• Healing wounds and burns

PRISCYLYTE’S CORNER (GUIDE)

WHY DOES MY CHINCHIN SOAK UP OIL?
Sometimes you find that your chin chin is soggy or has soaked up a lot of oil here are a few reasons why?
• The Oil wasn't hot enough.
• The Oil wasn't enough for the amount of chin chin dough being fried.
• The Oil was Overcrowded. Overcrowding the oil lowers the oil temperature and we are back to no 1 point above

HOW TO PREVENT CHINCHIN FROM SOAKING UP A LOT OIL WHEN FRYING.
• The oil wasn’t hot enough: Before you frying the chin chin. Always test the heated oil by putting a piece of chin chin in the oil . If oil bubbles and the piece of chin chin comes up immediately then the oil is ready for frying.

• The Oil wasn't enough for the amount of chin chin dough being fried:
Always fry your chin chin with enough oil. Frying chin chin requires deep frying which requires enough oil.

• Overcrowding the oil with dough: Make sure you have enough oil to fry your dough. Too much dough overcrowds the and doesn't allow adequate frying by lowering the temperature of the oil and making the dough soak up oil.

HOW DO I STOP THE OIL USED TO FRY CHIN CHIN FROM BUBBLING OVER AND SPILLING?

Most time this happens when you are frying a second batch of the chin chin dough. I have observed that this happens only when my dough is made with butter. When I make chin chin with magerine , i can fry the whole batch with the same batch without having the oil bubble up and spill over.
But since I prefer the texture and taste of chin chin made with butter here are a few tips

• If you are making a large quantity, use a large pot to fill in oil to accommodate large chin chin dough for each batch then Change the oil after each batch.
• If you are making a small quantity, Use a large pot to accommodate the amount of oil needed to fry the chin-chin in one batch.

BANANAS ARE BERRIES... AND SRAWBERRIES AREN'T!

Bananas are actually classified as berries, while strawberries are members of the rose family.
Here are some seriously cool facts about bananas!

• Bananas can float in water
• Bananas can help improve your mood and lower blood pressure
• Rubbing the inside of a banana peel on a mosquito bite can help keep it from itching
• Humans share about 50% of their DNA with bananas!

Crazy right?!

Bananas, Grapes, Avocados, and Eggplants, are all considered as berries but not strawberries!
I think it is time we brush up with our definitions for fruits and berries.

The popular trivia of Tomatoes being a fruit or vegetable has been done and dusted. What really intrigues us is how a Banana is a berry and Strawberries are not.

Botanically speaking, a fruit is defined as the portion of a flowering plant that develops from the o***y. To classify it as a berry, it should tick the following boxes-

1. Berry has three layers- outer skin (exocarp), fleshy middle (mesocarp), and inner part which holds seeds (endocarp)
2. The fruit must have two or more seeds
3. The fruit must develop from one flower that has one o***y
Bananas fulfill all of these requirements. They develop from a flower containing one single o***y, have soft skin and a fleshy middle.
Moreover, bananas contain several seeds that we don’t notice as they’re small. Tomatoes, peppers, cranberries, eggplants, and kiwis come from a flower with one o***y, and so are also berries.

Strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries botanically, are not considered as berries. They develop from flowers with multiple ovaries. That remains the only difference.

But while we are at Bananas, here are some nutritious facts about this fruit-

 Bananas are low in calories and have no fat, no sodium, and no cholesterol. They contain vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and vitamin B6.

 Research shows that eating bananas may lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes, as well as decrease the risk of getting some cancers.

 Bananas are the only fruit that contains the amino acid tryptophan plus vitamin B6. They help your body produce serotonin—a natural substance that alleviates depression.

BAKERS CORNER

One ripe banana replaces one egg in a cake recipe:

The banana will flavor the cake, so only use them when they complement the other ingredients. Extra leavening may be needed.

Bananas can also be a substitute for butter and oil in recipes:

If using bananas for butter, replace in equal amounts.
Bananas are in-season all year long, so there’s always a great time to enjoy this tropical fruit.

Here are nine tips for cooking and baking with bananas.

BUYING BABANAS:

When you’re at the grocery store, choose bananas that are firm. Avoid bananas that have bruises. Bananas should be green near the tip and stem.

The best bananas for eating and salads:

Bananas with yellow peels are best for fresh eating from the peel and for cutting up in salads.

The best bananas for baking and cooking:

Use ripe bananas (will have speckled peels) for baking, smoothies and other recipes.

Banana bread
Banana bread recipes call for ripe bananas, but the blacker the peel, the richer the banana flavor will be in the baked bread.

Slow down ripening
If your bananas are ripening too quickly, put bananas in the refrigerator. This will cause the peels to turn black, but the fruit inside will be fine.

Bananas can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Speed up ripening

Always store bananas at room temperature. Don’t leave in bags from the grocery store.

If you buy green bananas but need them ripened quickly, place them in a brown paper bag. Place the bag in a warm, dry spot, but not in direct sunlight. After one or two days, the peels should be turning yellow. If not, place a ripe apple in the brown bag with the bananas.

Freezing bananas
Freeze bananas by removing peel, adding a little lemon juice and placing in a sealed freezer bag.

Cooking substitutions
Bananas can be used in place of equal amounts of oil or fat. Mash up bananas, then measure into a dry measuring cup.

Add more bananas to your diet! These ideas are great for children!!

VOILA!!!

ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND!!!
