A COSTLY MISTAKE

CHAPTER 19

I don’t know how long I was out. When I came back to consciousness, I found myself tied and restrained to a chair. That was when reality hit me again and I realized how dangerous my situation really was. I looked around and found out that there were two people with me in my living room. One of them was Sandra, and the other was someone who had a striking resemblance to her. However, it was a male.

“You are awake.” Sandra spoke. “I don’t think I need to tell you why we are here. But I know you are a curious person. So, I will satisfy your curiosity. We are here to kill you. We have come to take vengeance on you for killing our beloved sister, Sasha. My brother was abroad when Sasha died. However, he had since come back to the country, and together, we have tracked you for years. Now, we have finally gotten you. So, do you have anything to say before we kill you?”

“Why did it take you so long to come for me? Why didn’t you tell your parents at that time that you knew who was responsible for Sasha’s passing?”

“Because I was very young at that time, and no one would have believed me. It would have been your word against mine and people would have normally believed you since your relationship with Sasha was secret.”

“So, what would you gain from killing me now? It has been many years since Sasha died. I am a changed man now. Why don’t you just leave vengeance to God?”

“Vengeance to God?” Sasha’s brother spoke angrily. “We should leave Vengeance to God. You cut down my sister’s life and you expect us to leave everything in the hands of God. You will die and go and meet her.”

“It may interest you to know that I didn’t kill your sister willfully. It was a mistake. She got pregnant for me, and in the process of terminating the pregnancy, she lost her life. I loved your sister. I really did. I actually still love her even in death. So, I don’t think she would approve what you two are about to do to me.”

“She’s dead and gone and cannot make any decision for herself. We will dish out justice on her behalf.”

I sat there and contemplated if there was any hope of escaping for me. We were all alone at home, just the three of us. It was a Saturday, so, I wasn’t sure of having any guests whose presence could disrupt their plans.

Soon, the phone of Sasha’s brother rang. He picked it and talked briefly with someone. Then, he came to Sandra and told her that something urgent had come up and she should excuse him. He said he had to run to Bonaberi to attend to some urgent business and would be back before she knew it. Sandra wasn’t comfortable with his leaving, but she had no choice. As soon as he left, I took the opportunity, and tried to convince Sandra to let me go.

“You know I love you, Sandra.” I spoke.

“Love? Are you out of your mind? Was it not the same love you preached to my sister that eventually caused her death?”

“You know I loved her. You and her once came to my house when you were much smaller and younger. You saw how well I treated her. I didn’t mean to hurt her. I couldn’t deliberately kill my own Sasha.”

“Stop trying to be sentimental, Mr. Jones. Or should I say sweet Sir?” She laughed. “That was the name my sister always called you. She loved you with everything in her. You were her icon; you were her hero. But you killed her.”

“I am tired of telling you that I didn’t kill her deliberately. I had no reason to.”

“So, why didn’t you confess? You saw how distressed, heartbroken and traumatized my parents were. Why didn’t you come forward. Do you know that my parents have not had closure up until today? They are still at a loss as to who got Sasha pregnant and attempted to abort it. Your confession would have saved them all the heartache they have been through till this day.”

“But you didn’t expect me to confess, did you?”

“Why not?”

“That would have meant a lot of trouble for me. It wouldn’t have been a scandal of epic proportions. I would have been arrested and locked up in a police cell. I might have even been killed. I couldn’t afford to do that.”

“Yes, because you were desperate. The only thing that mattered to you was your freedom. You didn’t care how anyone else felt. You were very selfish and wicked. You even went to the extent of eliminating everyone who knew about your involvement with my sister. I am sure you would have killed me too if you had access to me.”

“How did you know that I had a hand in the other deaths?” I asked, shocked.

“My sister told me. She appeared in my dream and explained everything to me. So, you see that you couldn’t hide your crimes forever.”

I was tired of talking to her. I hated being in a vulnerable and desperate situation. I knew I had to act fast before her brother returned. Once he did, it would be the end of me. I decided to dare her to kill me. I knew it was risky. However, I had no nothing else to say. I was trying to show strength and courage.

“Alright, you said you came to kill me. What are you waiting for? Why don’t you just go head and kill me?”

“Oh! You really want to die. Don’t worry, that wish would be granted as soon as my brother returns. For now, let’s look for a way to pass the time. Mmm! Yes, I think I have thought of a way. Let’s play a small game. You will be the teacher, which of course you are, and I will be the student.” She laughed.

“I despise games and I am not playing any with you.”

“You have no choice, Sweet Sir. You are completely under my control. You will do as I say.”

She came to where I was sitting, undid my zipper, removed my LGA and stroked it until it became strong. She then climbed on me, shifted her panties and let my LGA slid in. She started riding me and laughing hysterically, much to my dismay. If I had my way, I would have prevented my LGA from erecting. But as you know that man has a will of its own, and sometimes cannot be controlled.

“How does it feel like, Sweet Sir?” She laughed wildly. “You are having your last s*x before you die. I could kill you right away so that it would be declared that you died in active service.”

“Please, stop.”

“I will, Sir. You love making love to your student, not so? This is a perfect opportunity. I am giving you just what you want. How do you want it, Sir, hard or slow?” She laughed.

She was interrupted by my phone ringing. She checked and it was my mum. She rejected the call and continued what she was doing. Soon, I released, and she came down from me, smiling.

“I am sure you had a good time. You should be grateful that I had made this day a memorable one. It was like they say, the condemned man drank whisky before his execution.” She laughed.

My phone rang again, and it was my mum calling. She rejected the call again.

“You better let me take that call. It is my mum, and she could get suspicious if I don’t take the call.”

“Alright, you will take the call, but make sure you answer as casually as possible. Sound as normal as you can. If you say anything suspicious, I will put a bullet in your head. Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

She handed the phone to me.

“Hello, Mum.”

“Jones, where have you been? I have been trying to get to you.” That was my mum.

“I am sorry, Mum. I have had a busy day.”

“A busy day? But it is Saturday. Where are you now?”

“At work, I mean at home.”

“Jones, you are not sure where you are? Are you sure you are alright?” She sounded worried. You know a mother's instincts.

“Yes, Mum. I am fine.”

“Okay, I want you to come to the house later in the day.”

“Okay, I will be there.”

As soon as the call dropped, Sandra’s brother came in. She and her sister hogtied me, gagged me and dumped me in the boot of my car. He sister got in the passenger side while he drove to where I couldn’t tell. In the darkness of the boot, I prayed my last prayer and asked God to forgive me for all my sins and receive me in heaven.

About an hour later, the car came to a stop. The boot was opene and I was roughly pulled out of it. I looked around and noticed that we were in the outskirts of town. The area was lonely and isolated and there were no houses around. A pick axe and shovel were handed to me.

“Take this and get to work.” Sandra’s brother ordered.

“What do you want me to do?”

“You are digging your own grave, literally. When you are done digging, we will kill you and bury you inside. No one will ever find your co**se. Your parents will never have closure. They will suffer just like my parents have.”

“Please, don’t kill me.” I begged.

“So, you can beg?” He laughed. “I didn’t know you could beg. Now listen to me, one more word from you, and I will blow off your head. Now, get to work.”

I took the tools and was about to start digging when a police car appeared at the scene and three policemen appeared and asked Sandra’s brother to drop his weapon. He knew his plans had come to an end. However, he was desperate and didn’t want to let me go. So, he refused to drop his gun.

“Drop your gun, Sir.” The policeman repeated.

Instead of Sandra’s brother to drop the gun and hand it over, he instead raised the gun and fired twice. Two bullets tore into my heart and I fell down and began the journey of death which was a one-way street. At that same moment, the police opened fire on him. About twenty bullets got him, and he was dead long before he fell on the ground. Sandra was arrested and handcuffed.

An ambulance was called and both of us, me and Sandra’s brother were taken into it. When we got to the hospital, he was taken to the mortuary while I was rushed to the intensive care unit. A team of doctors got to work immediately. The bullets were removed after an emergency operation was performed. However, the damage had already been done. I needed an immediate heart transplant to survive, and since there was none available, I was placed on oxygen and palliative care while they waited for the worst.

At exactly midnight on that Saturday, I died. However, before I breathed my last. I had a lengthy and difficult conversation with my mother, who was at my bedside all through.

“Mum, how did you know I was in danger?” I asked.

“The phone call, my son. It didn’t sound normal. So, I got into my car and came to your place to look for you. As I was approaching your house, I noticed that your gate was wide open. Just then, I looked into the distance, and I saw a car that resembled yours being driven away. There were two people inside. I got suspicious and called the police.”

“Thank you, Mum, for coming to my rescue. Thank you, for being by me to the very end.” I spoke in a whisper.

“End? What are you talking about? The end has not come. We are leaving this hospital together, and we are going back home.” She replied in tears.

“I don’t think I can make it. I don’t think I will make it. I have done some very bad things in this life, Mum. I think my payback time has come. Let me just go and rest.” I spoke weakly.

“What kind of bad things, my son. The lady that was arrested at the crime scene said you killed some people.”

“Yes, Mum. I killed my former girlfriend. She was my student. She died with my unborn baby in her. I killed her unintentionally. I also killed my colleague. That one was intentional. He was going to expose me. So, I did what at that time I thought was the right time to do. Please, forgive me, Mother.”

“But why didn’t you tell me all these before now?” She was shocked.

“I couldn’t. I didn’t want to stress you. Besides, I thought it was all behind me. I didn’t know my past would come after me after so many years. The girl that was arrested at the scene, I know you have met her just once, so, you couldn’t make her out. That was the girl I brought to you as a fiancée. She was the younger sister of my ex-girlfriend whom I killed. I didn’t know because it had been long since I last saw her.”

“I knew it. I told you I had a nightmare about her killing you.”

“Yes, Mum. She came to kill me. I would have listened to you, but I didn’t. Please, forgive me. Tell my son I love him.”

“Don’t worry, my son. Just get well, and we will sort this out, okay?”

“Mother, my heart is getting cold. I don’t think I can make it. I can’t…, I can’t…, mum….

“What is happening? My son, my son!! Jones, Jonessss!!!” My mum shouted, shaking me desperately, but it was too late.

I was buried a week later. I don’t need to bother you about the details of the funeral and my dad’s reaction and all that. It would only break your heart, a least for those people who still had pity for me in spite of all my atrocities. Late at night, after the funeral, my mum was in the living room with some mourners who had come to console her. She had managed to doze off for a few minutes, when suddenly she started shouting in her sleep, asking a strange person not to take her son, me, away.

The mourners who were with her woke her up and asked her what was happening to her. Realizing it was a dream, she fell on the ground and started crying afresh. When she had stopped crying, she explained to them that in her dream, she saw a strange woman taking her son to a distant land. The women told her to calm down and prayed with her.

It might have been a dream, but my mum had seen what was going to happen. That same night, Sasha’s spirit appeared at my graveside and called.

“Jones, Jones, Jones.”

My spirit appeared and went to her. She took me by the hand and embraced me.

“Where have you been, Sasha. I missed you.” I spoke.

“I have been everywhere and nowhere, Sweet Sir. But one thing was sure. I was waiting for you. Now we are together, and so we will be to the end of time. Sweet Sir, I am glad you are with me now.”

“I am glad too, Sasha.”

She held my hand, and like two married couples, we walked away to a distant land.

It is from there that I am writing to you now.

THE END.

A COSTLY MISTAKE

CHAPTER 16

"Why didn't you bring the soil from the lady's grave?" The Sangoma asked me as I sat across from him on the bare floor of his house.

"I didn't have the courage, Sir. I went through a difficult time getting this one. I couldn't repeat the same feat on the same night. I almost died. I only got saved by..." I realized it would be bad business for me if I mentioned the old lady.

"That is alright." He spoke in his guttural voice. "However, I have to let you know that I can only make do with what I have. With this soil, I will be able to chain your friend's ghost. As for your ex lover, her spirit will keep roaming free until the day you bring her own soil."

"That's okay by me, old man. The most urgent one is my friend. He has come close to killing me several times. I will look for another day to get the lady's own."

The Sangoma jumped to his feet with an energy that belied his age. He went to the far corner of the room and returned with a small coffin. A closer look at the mini coffin showed that there were tiny holes bored into it. He put the coffin on the bare ground, opened it and poured the soil I had brought inside. He looked up at me and spoke.

"What did you say was your friend's name again?"

"Terence."

He raised both of his hands in the air and called...

"Terence! Terence!! Terence!!! I know you are fighting for a genuine cause; your untimely murder by your very own friend. However, in the world of darkness, it is power against power. Your friend has come for me to bind and chain your spirit, and so shall it be. Come now without delay. Your presence is needed here."

He had barely finished speaking when a strong wind started blowing in the house. Then a foul smell started emanating from no where in particular. The stench got so pungent that I used my palm to cover my nose. Then, it happened. Terence, or Terence's ghost appeared looking very, very angry.

The Sangoma used an invisible spiritual net and captured the ghost. There was a great struggle as he pulled the ghost towards the coffin. Finally, he succeeded and miniaturized the ghostly form of my one time partner in crime, Terence and forced him into the coffin. He quickly placed the lid on the coffin and held it tight.

He then removed some needles from a dark bottle and placed each one into the holes in the lid of the coffin. As he did this, a terrible, bloodcurdling and ghostly scream came out of the coffin. When he placed the last needle, he turned to me and spoke.

"It is done. You are now beyond his reach. Did you hate him this much? First, you killed him and now, you torture his spirit."

"Old man, I had no choice. Someday, I will have to stand before the Lord to face justice. But for now, I need my freedom. Thank you, old man."

"Alright, it is your decision. Now, take this coffin with you and place it somewhere it can never be disturbed. I suggest you bury it. If by some unfortunate means it gets opened, your friend's ghost will escape, and to be honest with you, there will be no refuge for you. He will make sure you meet a violent death. Now, go."

"Old man, no payment? I have something for you."

"Keep your money. Mr. Nkpa doesn't need your money. Now, be gone."

I rose from where I had been sitting, put the coffin in my bag and left the house. I walked all the way home in the cover of pitch darkness. On my way, home, I bypassed many people on the way, they were all silent and cloaked. I couldn't tell whether they were spirits or humans. However, everyone minded their own businesses.

When I got home, I took the coffin to my bathroom. There were two tiles on the bathroom floor that had become loose. With a little help from a pair of pliers, I removed them, broke the concrete below with a hammer, dug the black earth beneath and placed the coffin inside. When I was sure that it was safely in place, I covered it and went to sleep.

The following morning, I went to a building construction site close to my house and borrowed a little cement and sand. I used it to seal the hole and put the tiles back firmly in place. Satisfied, I went back to sleep.

Terence was gone now, hopefully forever. I had one more thing to do; chain Sasha's ghost. I hoped that it would be easier to do. I didn't want to go through all what I went through for Terence's. However, there was no hurry with hers. I decided that I would give myself a week before venturing into such a deadly mission again.

But then, something happened that made chaining Sasha's co**se unnecessary. The following day, I went to work and realized that there was wild agitation everywhere. I couldn't tell what had happened. So, I called a student and asked.

"What is going on? Why is everyone so excited?" I asked.

"Sir, two of our students were killed last night." She spoke.

"Killed? What did they do? What happened?" I was alarmed.

"Sir, it is terrible. They were roasted alive. They attacked another student in her hostel, r***d and killed her. When they were about leaving, after committing their dastardly act, her neighbours noticed and raised an alarm.

Everyone in the neighborhood came out of their houses and beat them thoroughly. Finally, petrol was poured on them and they were both burnt to ashes."

"Jesus!! Who were these two students?" I asked.

"Baristine and Theodore, Sir."

I was shocked beyond words. No one needed to tell me that the female student they had killed was Gloria. So, my two acolytes hadn't followed my orders to leave town, even after I had given them huge sums of money. I knew what might have happened.

They might have gotten insecured and figured that it would be folly to leave Gloria alive. So, in order to tie all loose ends, they went and killed her. Unfortunately for them, they both lost their lives in the process.

I felt no pity for them. In a way, I was happy that they had died, too. They were also loose ends that needed to be tied. The only problem now was the money I had given them. What a waste?!!

I went home happily that day. All my troubles were over. Terence's ghost had been chained. Gloria was dead, and she took my two acolytes along with her. Now, no one else knew my secret.

I had destroyed Sasha's journal, and so far, Gloria was the only person she was appearing to. I was a free man again. I was very happy and, for the first time in months, that night, I slept like a child.

While I was asleep that night, Sasha's funeral was replayed in my dream. I saw the whole thing again in my dream. However, I noticed something I didn't notice during the actual funeral.

While I was speaking, on behalf of the teachers, during the funeral, there was one person that I didn't notice, but she was there all along, looking at me intently. It was Sasha's younger sister, Sandra.

I woke up from the dream, swearing. Sandra!! Why had I completely forgotten about her? She knew I was dating her late sister. Why had she never told anyone? She was just eight years old. Could age be the factor? Was she taking her time? Did she have something up her sleeves?

Whatever the case, my peace had once again been shattered. That dream wasn't for nothing. That dream was a premonition that something bad was coming my way, and like a man, I had to face it. There was no other way.

I went back to sleep, sadly.

A COSTLY MISTAKE

CHAPTER 15

I shut my eyes and waited for the blow, but instead, I saw a bright line shine in my eyes. Power had been restored and just at the same moment, Helga opened the door and found me crouched down in one corner of her verandah. I was half naked and terribly afraid. Terence's ghost had disappeared.

"Jesus Christ!! Prof. What's happening to you? What are you doing here at this ungodly hour of the night. Everyone is asleep. You are supposed to be sleeping."

"Oh! Thank God, Helga. Thank God for the rescue. "I spoke in gratitude, diving into her house. She shut the door behind her and walked towards me.

"What is going on, Prof? What is happening to you?"

"Helga, there was a ghost after me and it meant to kill me."

"A ghost? Whose ghost?"

"Terence, Terence, my colleague. He was right there, right outside your door, and was about to strike me dead before you opened the door and found me." I explained.

"This is serious. Why is he after you? Did you wrong him? Do you have any hand in his death?" She was puzzled.

"None of above, Helga." I lied. "He just hates me for no reason. He has always been jealous of me."

"Hmm, there is more to this than meets the ordinary eye. Anyway, you can spend the night here and go back to your home tomorrow. It is evident that you have no intentions, whatsoever to go back to your house." Helga spoke.

"You are right, Helga. Thank you, thank you very much.

That night, I slept in Helga's living room. I could not shut my eyes all night. I was afraid that Terence might appear again. Thankfully, dawn came with any further appearances by Terence. Early that morning, I went home and freshened up. Then, I got dressed and went to school, but not before I had made a major decision. I had decided that I would go see the Sangoma Helga had talked to me about. I wanted him to bind and chain the spirits of Sasha and Terence.

After school that day, I went to where the Sangoma lived. It was very easy to locate because Helga had already given me the necessary directions. When I got to the neighborhood, I met one old grandma who lived in the same compound as the Sangoma. I greeted her.

"Good afternoon, Ma."

"Good afternoon, my son. Are you looking for someone?" She asked. Her voice was frail and shaky.

"Yes, Ma. I am looking for the native doctor who lives here. Do you have any idea whether he is home?"

"Yes, he is, but what do you want in a place like this?" She asked.

"I want to see him, Ma. My business is my own."

"Okay, if you say so. I know it's none of my business. However, I want you to be careful. There is evil in that place that doesn't sleep. That native doctor is not just evil, he is the devil himself. There are rumours that before he came to settle in this town, he had died and was buried in a distant land. As far as I am concerned, he is an undead " She explained in fear.

"Thank you for your concern, Ma, but what I am facing is too big. In fact, I am ready to meet the devil himself if only he would provide me a solution."

"Okay, my son. It was just an old woman showing concern. Please, do not take any offence. May God be with you."

"May God be with you, too, old mother."

I went to the sangoma's door and knocked with fear. There was no answer from within. Just when I was about to knock again, a hoarse and coarse voice spoke from within.

"Go to your friend's village and bring me a piece of soil from his grave. When you have it, come back to me and I will grant your wish."

"Good after, old man." I spoke. "I don't know what you are talking about. Please, can I come in?"

"You killed him, and now he wants your neck. You also killed your former girlfriend and you are now sleeping with her friend. Both of them, your late friend and your late ex are very angry at you."

"Yes, Sir. That is true. How did you know?" I was astonished at his knowledge of my life.

"Shut up, young man. You have delved deep in evil. They want your life and they will get it if you don't act fast. Go get the soil from their graves, both of them. Bring it to me, and I will set you free. Go now."

"Can't I at least see who am I taking to?" I asked.

"There is no time. Hurry or you shall die. Hurry! Hurry!!"

I left the Sangoma's premises in great wonder. He didn't even allow me see him. I didn't even enter his house. However, he spoke so accurately about me. As scary as that was, it made me happy. That meant he was a real witch doctor, and I could rely on him. I smiled broadly at the thought of that.

But then, he had given me a difficult task. I had to go to the graves of both Sasha and Terence and extract soil. That was not a very easy thing to do. For a start, both of their ghosts were aboard, looking for me. Wouldn't it be folly for me to go and present myself to them right at their burial places?

I had never been to Terence's village. I had failed to accompany the co**se to the village. I wish I had , but I was too afraid. What was I going to do now?

My two acolytes, Baristine and Theodore would have done this assignment. However, I had already released them from duty. I had to do this myself. I had to act fast, too. The Sangoma had warned that I had to make haste or die.

The next day, I went to school and had a random discussion about Terence. Inadvertently, they gave me all the information I needed. They told me his village of origin, ad even the name of the quarter where his family lived.

On Saturday, I went to the park, got a vehicle and went to the village. I got there around noon and after making some inquiries, I was directed to where Terence's family compound was. I got a bike and went there.

When I got to his compound, I presented myself as one of his friends who was out of the country and had only recently come to town. His family was happy to receive me. I was taken to the back of the house and shown his grave.

I have to be honest with you, it required great courage for me to even go close to the grave. There I was, at the grave of the man I had unjustly killed. I half expected him to rise from his grave at any moment and take me with him.

After I had shared some fake crocodile tears, we went back to the front of the house. I gave the family three hundred thousand and told them it was my own contribution for all the expenses they had incurred during his funeral. They were very happy and heaped praises and blessings on me.

I told them I would stay the night. So, his poor mother asked one of his cousins to take me to a local inn where I booked a room for the night. His family had proposed that I slept in their house. I had, however, quickly turned down their proposal. That was a risk I couldn't dare take.

The cousin who took me to the inn was one beautiful lady of about nineteen years. She was seriously warming up to me, but I couldn't take advantage of the situation. I had come to the village for a matter that had to do with life and death. I had to be careful not to accommodate any distractions.

Late that night, around 2:00 AM, when I was sure that everyone was asleep, I woke up, dressed in completely black clothes, and went to Terence's compound. After making sure that there was nobody awake, I tiptoed to the grave. I was terribly afraid. There were strange and scary sounds coming from the dense bush just behind the grave. However, against all odds, I went on all fours and scooped some soil from grave and put in a black plastic bag I had brought with me. Satisfied, I was about to leave when, you won't believe it, I saw Terence standing just a few feet from me.

I would have screamed, but that would have awaken everyone. So, against all odds, I stifled the scream that was trying to force its way out.

"Terence." I whispered. I was terribly afraid and knew my end had finally come.

He didn't respond, instead he moved closer to me. His aim was to touch me. He was a ghost and was therefore not supposed to have any bodily contact with a mortal. If he did, I would be dead. So, I tried to move backwards to avoid his touch, but I couldn't. I realized that I couldn't move and had been rooted to one place.

He was now close to me, and was about to touch me when a strange thing happened. The old lady, the Sangoma's neighbour, the one who had warned me to stay away from the Sangoma, appeared, held my hand and we both vanished and appeared in my hotel room.

I had never beheld such devilry before. When I found myself back in my hotel room, and there was an old lady with me, I went down on my knees in fear. I used both my palms to cover my face, and then asked in a trembling voice.

"Who are you, old woman? Why did you come to my aid?"

"You know who I am." She replied. "I warned you against going to see that evil man. Why didn't you heed to my warning?"

"It is you, old mother. Mama, I am sorry. I need help. I have involved myself in too much evil. I need help. Please, help me." I was weeping.

"It is not too late to be free, but only the truth can set you free. You can't mix good with evil. I have helped you now, by saving you from being killed by the angry ghost of the man whose life you cut short. I will help you again, but only if you never visit the Sangoma again."

When she said this, a great heaviness overtook me and I fell on the bed and passed out. When I woke up in the morning, I was alone, and beside me was the black nylon bag that contained the soil.

I had no time to bathe. I collected the plastic bag, and left the inn. I took the first available cab and went back to the city. The old lady had warned me not to go to the Sangoma anymore. I thought about it for a while and decided that she was just being jealous.

I assumed that she was some kind of a priestess herself. She was just being selfish and wanted to sn**ch me, the Sangoma's customer. Also, she had said only the truth could set me free. What was the meaning of that? She expected me to go and confess, no way.

I went home, bathed and slept all day. I had decided that in order to avoid being seen by the old woman, I would go see the Sangoma at night. So, at exactly midnight, I left my home.

My destination?

The Sangoma's house.
