*Diarrhea*
(Meaning & Understanding)
day 1
Diarrhea is not a disease on its own — it is a sign that something is disturbing the digestive system. It is the frequent passage of loose or watery stool, often more than three times a day.
Think of your stomach and intestines as a food-processing factory. When everything works well, food is digested, nutrients are absorbed, and waste is formed normally. But when infection, poor food choices, or irritation enters the system, the body may flush things out quickly — that is diarrhea.
Everyday examples:
Eating contaminated street food and suddenly running to the toilet.
A child reacting to dirty water.
Someone taking antibiotics and developing loose stool.
Common causes:
Germ infections
Contaminated food or water
Poor hygiene
Food intolerance
Side effects of drugs
Digestive disorders
*Types of Diarrhea*
1. Acute Diarrhea
Comes suddenly and lasts a few days. Often caused by infection or food poisoning.
Example:
You eat spoiled food at an event, and by night you have repeated stooling.
2. Chronic Diarrhea
Lasts weeks or keeps coming back. This may point to an underlying issue like Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Example:
Someone who has loose stool almost every week.
3. Traveler’s Diarrhea
Caused by unfamiliar or contaminated food and water.
4. Osmotic Diarrhea
Happens when certain foods draw too much water into the intestine.
Example:
Some people react after taking too much milk.
Question:
Is every diarrhea caused by “ulcer” as many people assume?
