NVMA Plateau State Chapter, AVMS University of Jos, IVSA UNIJOS-WORLD RABIES DAY SCHOOL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN 26th September 2025, at Government Secondary School Kufang, LEA Primary School Kufang, Government Secondary School Laranto, and Henco Blenwin Primary and Secondary school, Jos, Plateau State.

The second day of the Rabies Awareness Campaign organised by the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Plateau State Chapter held at various schools in Jos was successful.

The various Teams took the message about Rabies, it's prevention and Mitigation to the students and their Teachers. The students were also charged to carry the message to their friends and families in order to increase the awareness against this deadly disease.

The students showed so much enthusiasm to know more about Rabies and were intrigued by the answers given by the speakers.

The various speakers took turn to emphasize the need on the collaboration between various components as emphasized by the Team of this year's World Rabies day- ACT NOW: YOU, ME, COMMUNITY. The students were enlightened on the specific actions they need to take, from Vaccination of Pets, avoiding unfamiliar animals, immediate actions to take if bitten by a dog or cat (To wash the bite wound with soap under a running water for 15 minutes, and report to any Veterinary clinic or Veterinary hospital and to notify the pet owner about the incidence), to quarantine their pets if they notice any abnormal changes from their normal behaviour and to receive post exposure human anti-rabies Prophylactic treatment under the guidance of a Veterinarian.

As part of the activities for the Annual world Rabies Day Commemoration, Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination of Dogs will take place at the University of Jos Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Polo roundabout on the 29th of September 2025.

Indeed, we can end Rabies if we all work together.

We commend the Plateau State NVMA Chapter for organising such an impactful event and for the opportunity given to our students to participate in the exercise.

NVMA Plateau State Chapter, AVMS University of Jos, IVSA UNIJOS-WORLD RABIES DAY SCHOOL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN 25th September 2025, at Government Secondary School Kabong and Islamia Pilot School, Jos, Plateau State.

In preparation for the Annual World world Rabies Day Commemoration on 28th September, the Plateau State Chapter of Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association in collaboration with Association of Veterinary Medical Students and International Veterinary Students Association University of Jos embarked on school sensitization campaign to educate and enlighten school students and Teachers on the deadly Rabies disease.

Students were taught on what the disease is, it's mode of transmission and prevention strategies, driving the message on the need to work together in eradicating the deadly disease.

The students were enthusiastic to learn more about the disease and asked questions about their role in ending the spread of Rabies.

The various teams took turn to teach the students on the need for Animal (Dog&Cat) vaccinations which is the best preventive measure against the disease.
Students were also enlightened on the need to report any case of Dog bites to the nearest Veterinary hospitals for prompt actions and guidance.

We appreciate the Plateau State NVMA Chapter for organising such an impactful event and for the opportunity given to our students to participate in the exercise.

Big Congrats to Our Students! πŸŽ‰

Huge congratulations to Andara Joseph Mamani, Judith James Adams and Ayopelumi Tunde-Dada, on successfully defending their Final Year Project in Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Jos! πŸΎπŸ’‘

We are beyond proud of both of them for their hard work and dedication.

Andara's research on Bacterial pathogens and antibiotic susceptibility profiles revealed some important findings, including the prevalence of E. coli and its resistance to key antibiotics.

This highlights the need for responsible antibiotic use in Veterinary medicine.

Judith's work on Staphylococcus species in horses attending the Jos International Polo Tournament identified potential MRS isolates, contributing to our understanding of antimicrobial resistance in equine health.

Ayopelumi's work on prevalence of SARS-COV2, the causative agent of the β€˜2020 pandemic’, in cattle in Makurdi, Benue State, indicated the risk for reverse zoonosis.

Wishing them all the best in their future endeavors! May their research experiences shape their careers and inspire them to make a difference in Veterinary practice. πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸ’•

We want to sincerely appreciate Prof. K. F. CHAH for serving as the External examiner.
