MATING IN CATS

The reproductive cycle of the female cat begins as early as 4 months after which the female cat comes in to heat and is ready for mating, at times it may reach 6 months before puberty is attained.
At puberty the female cat is ready for mating and if she is an indoor cat will be uncomfortable and start looking for ways out of the house to seek for a tom cat for mating in which period, she may exhibit others signs of heat such as excessive grooming, restlessness, low crawl and moans and the tail positioning may be one of the markers as the female cat will raise her buttocks and set the tail aside; this is the mating position being exhibited very often.
After the first heat the female cat will come into heat more often almost every month for indoor cats until there is a mating and gestation or spaying as the case maybe.

Why do female cats scream during mating?
It is well observed that a female cat will scream, screech or become very aggressive during or just after mating with the tomcat. When cats mate they caterwaul and it can be quite loud.
The reason for this aggressive behavior is that the tom cat’s p***s has little barbs or spines on it.

When the p***s is inserted, the spines lay flat, but when withdrawing the p***s, the spines cause a raking action on the female’s cat’s va**na, causing pain, and so the female reacts by attacking the male.

Why does the tom cat’s p***s have spines?
Female cats(queens) are induced ovulators; that is the o***y does not release an egg until after mating. Therefore, the pain caused by the pe**le spikes of the tom cat during the first mating causes shock, thus initiating the ovulation cycle (this will take a little over 24 hours to actually begin).

The female is then ‘on intense heat’ for around 3 days. A queen may mate as quickly as 30 minutes after the first copulation and with different tom cats therefore its possible to have a female cat give birth to a litter of kittens with up to five different sires.

Why does the male (tomcat) bite the female on the neck during mating?
This all explains why the female cat is so angry and tries to swipe the male, and also why the male has to be very careful not to get injured – hence why he holds the female by the scruff of the neck during mating.

Pets especially dogs and cats are fond of toppling the waste bin to scavenge for left overs or polythene/plastic/foil used to package food. This is not necessarily peculiar to poorly fed dogs/ strays as it’s a habit common to all dogs and cats.
This is because they are known to have a a higher sense of smell than humans and they can therefore sniff out food even in the bin. This may come off as annoying as they liter the environment with the trash while sorting and this could also be embarrassing as it may be misinterpreted as hunger or inadequate care/feeding but most importantly, this could be a danger to these pets as consuming these polyethylene bags may lead to obstruction along the GI( as polythene/plastic are non-biodegradable) and this could lead to health complications and if not handled properly and promptly, death.
It is therefore advised to let these pets have zero access to the trash, evacuate the trash frequently and if you observe any sign of discomfort call your veterinarian immediately.
