*Report on YAFODA Campaign Against Drug Abuse During Sallah Celebration in Sabon Gari, Kano State, Nigeria. 20th Match, 2026*
The Youth Awareness Foundation on Drug Abuse (YAFODA) carried out a public awareness campaign against drug abuse during the recent Eid al-Fitr celebration in Sabon Gari. The campaign was organized as part of the foundation’s ongoing efforts to educate young people and the general public on the dangers of drug abuse and to promote a healthy and responsible lifestyle within the community.
The awareness program took place in a busy area of Sabon Gari where many residents gathered during the Sallah festivities. Members of YAFODA, community leaders, and volunteers came together to interact with residents and pass important messages about the harmful effects of illicit drug use. The campaign created an opportunity to reach a large number of people, especially youths who are often the most vulnerable to drug abuse.
During the event, banners and educational materials were displayed to attract attention and inform the public about the mission of YAFODA. The organization emphasized that drug abuse has serious consequences for individuals, families, and society as a whole. Speaker Abubakar Shu'aibu Maitumaki highlighted how substance abuse can lead to health problems, crime, unemployment, and the breakdown of social values.
Community members present at the gathering expressed their support for the initiative and commended YAFODA for bringing such an important message to the public during the festive period. Many participants acknowledged that awareness campaigns like this are necessary to guide young people and discourage them from engaging in harmful behaviors.
Representatives and members of YAFODA also encouraged parents, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to work together in monitoring and guiding youths. They stressed that combating drug abuse requires collective responsibility and continuous education.
The campaign further served as a reminder that celebrations such as Sallah should be a time of peace, gratitude, and responsible behavior. YAFODA urged young people to celebrate responsibly and avoid substances that could harm their health or future.
In conclusion, the awareness campaign by the Youth Awareness Foundation on Drug Abuse in Sabon Gari, Kano State, was a meaningful step toward addressing the growing concern of drug abuse among youths. Through community engagement, education, and advocacy, YAFODA continues to play an important role in promoting a drug-free society and empowering young people to make positive life choices.
At the end of the program, adequate food, drinks and some entertainment were provided for the drug abuse victims. In addition, T-shirts and caps were distributed to them as part of the outreach support.
*Challenges*
*1 Stigma and Fear:*
Some community members were reluctant to openly discuss drug abuse issues because they feared being judged or associated with drug users.
*2 Limited Participation:*
Although many people showed interest, some residents were unwilling to participate fully in the discussions or awareness activities.
*3 Accessibility of Drugs:*
The availability of drugs in some parts of the community makes it easier for young people to obtain and misuse them.
*4 Insufficient support:*
Lack of sufficient support and motivation for members of YAFODA prevents them from going out to carry out the activities of the organization.
*5 Financial assistant:*
Additionally, some members need to be assisted with a small form of support due to their day-to-day needs and the current living conditions
*Recommendations*
*1 Continuous Awareness Programs:*
Regular sensitization campaigns should be organized in communities, schools, and religious centers to keep educating people about the dangers of drug abuse.
*2 Youth Engagement Programs:*
Providing skills training, sports activities, and educational opportunities can help keep youths positively engaged and reduce the likelihood of drug use.
*3 Collaboration with Community Leader*
Traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders should be actively involved in spreading anti-drug messages.
*4 Strengthening Law Enforcement:*
Authorities should intensify efforts to control the sale and distribution of illegal drugs within the community.
*5 Support and Rehabilitation Services:*
Drug users should be encouraged to seek help through counseling and rehabilitation programs rather than being stigmatized.
May Allah (S W T) continue to bless and uplift the sponsor of this great program The Zero Drug Ambassador and to entire executives and members of YAFODA... Have wonderful Sallah celebrations 🤩
