In 2023, record levels of acute food insecurity persist around the world. Protracted food crises and new shocks have left at least 238 million people acutely food insecure, with a 10% increase from 2022. To address this issue, providing an enabling environment for citizens to grow what we eat locally will go a long way in reducing this menace. Let's work towards sustainable food systems to ensure food security for all.

KANO, NIGERIA – July 24, 2023.
The Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) hosted an exclusive screening of a compelling documentary by Rahmat Muhammad, an emerging force in documentary filmmaking, at their Kano office. Drawing from intimate conversations with community members and the Kano project team, the film offers a deep dive into the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) initiative - a pivotal programme which seeks to combat and overturn the severe impacts of malnutrition in Kano state.

The ANRiN project, financed by the World Bank International Development Agency, aims to bolster inter-sectoral collaboration to tackle nutrition-sensitive challenges across 12 Nigerian states, including Kano. Launched in May 2021, its mission is clear: boost the uptake of affordable, high-quality community-based nutrition services for expectant mothers, lactating women, and children under five. The project's heart lies in its dedication to preventing irreversible nutritional damage affecting a child's growth, development, and cognitive abilities within the crucial first 1000 days (5 years) of life.

The documentary, Kano ANRiN: Transforming Lives, kicks off with a sweeping portrait of Kano before swiftly ushering viewers into an 8-part expedition. It opens with a stark revelation of Kano's deep-rooted malnutrition dilemma, segues into the community's awareness, introduces the dedicated consortium executing the ANRiN solution, and showcases the unique products and services under ANRiN. The documentary doesn't shy from the challenges faced by the programme but also emphasizes the success factors used to overcome those challenges. Ultimately, it captures the transformative impact of the programme through testimonies from beneficiaries and envisages the path ahead.

The story of Kano ANRiN, narrated by its participants, has been beautifully transformed into a deeply emotive documentary and an immersive film. This cinematic journey places viewers right in the heart of ANRiN's operations, letting them witness service delivery and programme management through the eyes of those passionately bringing the programme to life on the ground.

“This is a very high impact program that has to do with building the capacity of the children. The children of the state, of the nation. To be able to build a better state, a better nation, a better country,” remarked Dr. Garba Abdul, the Project Director of PPFN Kano ANRiN, as he expressed optimism for the general effects of the ANRiN collaboration.

Meet Amina Dahiru, a wife and mother of four from Rano local government in Kano State.

During her pregnancy, Amina received visits from the PPFN-ANRiN ward service providers. She was provided with Iron-and-folic acid (IFA) supplements and intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp) for malaria. These interventions contributed to her safe childbirth without blood loss and protected her from malaria during pregnancy.

After giving birth, Amina received counselling, which emphasized exclusive breastfeeding and advised against giving water to her newborns until they reach six months of age. Amina followed this recommendation, and all her children, except the first one, exclusively breastfed without water for the initial six months.

Amina noticed a significant difference in her pregnancies before and after joining the ANRiN program. During her first pregnancy
she faced anemia and a risk of blood loss during delivery. However, with subsequent pregnancies, she followed counselling to consume iron-rich foods like leafy greens, beans, fruits, and vegetables, resulting in improved outcomes.

One of the program's benefits that Amina experienced is a reduced need for hospital visits due to proactive counselling and health-supporting products that contribute to the well-being of her and her family.

Amina expresses gratitude to the ANRiN team and recommends their continued efforts in reaching rural areas and educating the local population.

The mission of the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) programme is to provide targeted nutrition counselling services, nutrition products, and drugs to specific groups, including children, pregnant women, lactating mothers, pregnant lactating mothers, and adolescent mothers.

In Kano state, the programme provides counselling for maternal infant young child feeding (MIYCN) and provides various products such as iron and folic acid supplementation, intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp) of malaria in pregnancy with sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine combination, micronutrient powder (MNP) supplements for infants, low osmolar oral rehydration salts with zinc for diarrhea (Zinc/ORS), vitamin A supplements and deworming with albendazole for children.

In this photo, a Ward Service Provider (WSP) demonstrates to a beneficiary how to properly administer the Micronutrient Powder (MNP) mixture to Haladu, a two-and-a-half-year-old child.

Such demonstrations are an integral part of the services provided by the WSPs through the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) program. The WSPs prioritize ensuring that beneficiaries have a clear understanding of the administration process, enabling them to replicate it confidently at home.

Meet Talatu Dantala Salisu and her 17-month-old son, Sayyid. Talatu resides in Garun Malam local government in Kano State with her husband and their six children.

After hearing about ANRiN on the radio, Talatu welcomed the ward service providers (WSPs) into her home, who provided products for two of her children, including low osmolar oral rehydration salts with zinc for diarrhea (Zinc/ORS), micronutrient powder (MNP) supplements, and Albendazole. She observed noticeable improvements in her children's cognitive abilities, as they became physically stronger, focused better, and easily recalled lessons at school.

Alongside product distribution, Talatu receives counselling on nutrient-dense foods like beans, fruits, and vegetables, which she incorporates into her family's diet.

Talatu takes the initiative to educate other women in her community and she even demonstrates how she utilizes the products on her own children. When her neighbours witness the positive results in her son, they are encouraged to participate in the program as well.

Talatu strongly recommends the continuation of the program, as it not only ensures safe childbirth but also supports families who struggle to afford health-supporting products.
