United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has expressed worries over what they described as increased malnutrition in Kano, charging the Kano State government to as a matter of urgency establish an agency that will be in charge of nutrition with the aim to halt the dangers caused by malnutrition in Kano.
The Nutrition Specialist with UNICEF, Mr. Oluniyi Oyedokun, who make the call today in an Executive Legislative, CSOs Media Roundtable Conference on Budgeting for Nutrition, Organised by Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) in Collaboration with United Nations children's Fund (UNICEF).
Speaking at his presentation called "Nutrition Situation In Kano State: A Call to Action", Mr. Oluniyi noted that about four hundred thousand children are victims of malnutrition in Kano, identifying poor domestication policy, weak nutrition governance, non implementation of strategic plan of action to address multi sectoral malnutrition in the state as some of the major challenges leading to increase of malnutrition in Kano. Noting that to address the issue, the State government has to establish an agency that will be in charge of nutrition with the aim to halt the dangers caused by malnutrition.
Correspondent Victor Christopher reports that the Programme Officer of CISLAC, Muhammad Murtala, who also expressed dismay over delay releasing of nutrition intervention funds on the part of State Government, which he say is on an increase over the years, identifying increase death of children, low height for age, low weight for age height, serious illness, permanent blindness, mental retardation amongst orders as some of the consequences of mulnutrition.
He however charged the State government to release the funds for nutrition intervention so as to save the lives of new born baby and children in Kano State.
