The Government of Nigeria is implementing the multi-sectorial Nigeria Erosion and watershed management Project (NEWMAP), which is financed by the World Bank, Global Environment Facility, the Special Climate Change Fund, and the Government of Nigeria. NEWMAP finances activities implemented by the Federal government. The project currently includes 20 states, namely Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Abia, Cross River, Borno, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Gombe, Katsina, Kogi, Kano, Imo, Niger, Sokoto, Oyo, Nasarawa, Plateau and Ondo. It will subsequently scale out to other states nationwide.
The lead agency at the federal level is the Federal Ministry of Environment (FME). Department of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, state and Local governments, local communities and civil society organizations (CSOs) are or will be involved in the project, given that the project is a multi-sector operation involving MDAs concerned with water resources management, public works, agriculture and town planning, earth and natural resources information, and disaster risk management.
The development objective of the NEWMAP is: to rehabilitate degraded lands and reduce longer term erosion vulnerability in targeted areas.
Investments include a strategic combination of civil engineering, vegetative land management and other catchment protection measures and community-led adaptive livelihood initiatives. The accountability of these investments will be reinforced by strengthening institutions and information services across sectors and states, including support to improve governance, regulatory compliance, environmental monitoring, impact evaluation, catchments and land use planning, and to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to promote and implement climate-resilience, and low-carbon development.
