Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. It occurs when the pancreas fails to produce an adequate amount of insulin, or when the body exhibits an insufficient response to insulin. Diabetes affects individuals across all age demographics. This chronic (lifelong) condition can be effectively managed through pharmacological interventions and/or lifestyle modifications.
Glucose, primarily derived from carbohydrates in food and beverages, serves as the body's essential source of energy. The bloodstream facilitates the transportation of glucose to all cells, where it is utilized for energy production.
Function of Glucose in the Body
Once glucose enters the bloodstream, it requires assistance—a “key”—to reach its intended destination. This key is insulin, a vital hormone. When the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin or when the body fails to utilize it appropriately, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia).
Persistently high blood glucose can precipitate a multitude of health complications, including cardiovascular diseases, neuropathy, and ocular disorders. The formal designation for diabetes is diabetes mellitus. Another condition also referred to as “diabetes” is diabetes insipidus, although the two are fundamentally different. They share the term “diabetes” due to their common symptoms of increased thirst and frequent urination; however, diabetes insipidus is significantly rarer than diabetes mellitus.
