Do you know what it’s like to grow up with mental health struggles in a Nigerian home?

For many people, childhood wasn’t just about school, cartoons, or play, it was about survival.

Surviving the silence.
Surviving the shame.
Surviving in a home where mental health wasn’t a conversation, it was a taboo.

In Nigerian households, emotional pain is often ignored, spiritualized, or punished. Boys are told not to cry. Girls are told to “be strong.” Vulnerability is seen as weakness, not a cry for help.

This blog post is an honest reminder of what it really feels like to grow up with mental health issues in such an environment, and why breaking the silence is the first step to healing.

Let’s keep talking. Let’s keep healing

If you grew up in a Nigerian home with mental health issues, your childhood may have felt like a confusing mix of silence, fear, and survival...

Did you know mental health poetry is a thing?

It’s a powerful way to express complex emotions and moments of healing through words.

A new piece just went up on MMHI blog titled:
“When Holding a Hand Was the Breakthrough My Mind Needed.”

It captures the quiet power of connection, how something as simple as holding a hand can bring calm to a restless mind.

If you’re into poetry that speaks to mental and emotional wellness, check it out here:

Your fingers found mine, and suddenly, the world wasn’t so loud. My chest loosened. My breathing slowed. I felt seen. Not with eyes, but with presence.

What happens after the violence ends?

The trauma doesn’t disappear, it lingers in silence.

Our latest blog post on the MMHI, written by ADANNA NWAOKU explores the mental health impact of the Yelewata and Daudu killings in Benue State, a reminder that healing must go beyond headlines and security responses, people are still hurting, and their mental health must be prioritized too.

If you’re passionate about mental health, social justice, or Nigeria’s future, this is a piece you need to read.

On 14th June, 2025, the farming communities of Yelewata and Daudu in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State was turned into a killing field as suspected ...

Ever had a panic attack?
Or wondered what it truly feels like?

In this deeply personal piece, Temmie shares her first encounter with anxiety as a teenager, the shock of her diagnosis, and the quiet strength it has taken to keep showing up ever since.

From panic attacks in school bathrooms to learning how to care for herself through heartbreak and life transitions, this is more than a story. It’s a reminder that healing is messy, personal, and possible.

Let her words remind you that you’re not alone, and that it’s okay to care for your mind before it crashes.
