THE DANGERS OF HEPATITIS:
Most people have heard of hepatitis, but few understand the harm posed by this potentially deadly collection of diseases. Here's what you need to know.

The liver is the body's largest internal organ. It performs many important jobs, including changing food into energy and cleaning alcohol and poisons from the blood.
The liver:

(1) Makes bile, a yellowish-green liquid that helps with digestion
(2) Produces proteins and blood-clotting factors that the body needs
(3) Regulates glucose (sugar) in the blood and stores extra sugar
(4) Works with the stomach and intestines to digest food
(5) Stores vitamins and minerals
(6) Removes toxic (poisonous) substances from the blood

ILLUSTRATION OF THE LIVER
The largest organ in your body, the liver is found behind the lower ribs on the right side of the abdomen. It changes food to energy and cleans alcohol and other poisons from your blood.

Hepatitis swells the liver, stopping it from working well. It can lead to scarring (cirrhosis) or cancer. Viruses cause most cases of hepatitis. The various types of the disease are named for the viruses which cause them. For example, the cause of hepatitis A is the hepatitis A virus. Drug or alcohol use can also lead to hepatitis. In other cases, your immune system attacks healthy liver cells in your body by mistake. Vaccines prevent some viral hepatitis forms. Sometimes hepatitis goes away by itself. If it does not, it can be treated with herbs. In some cases, hepatitis lasts a lifetime.

HEPATITIS: ACUTE OR CHRONIC?
Acute hepatitis is the initial infection, which may be mild or severe. If the infection lasts for six months or longer, the condition is called chronic hepatitis. Hepatitis A and E do not cause chronic hepatitis. Hepatitis viruses B, C, and D can produce both acute and chronic episodes of the illness. Chronic hepatitis B and C are especially serious.

TYPES OF HEPATITIS
Currently, five different viruses are known to cause viral hepatitis:

HEPATITIS A: Sometimes called "infectious hepatitis," hepatitis A is spread by eating food or drinking water contaminated with human waste. Hepatitis A is rarely life-threatening.

HEPATITIS B: Also called "serum hepatitis," hepatitis B spreads from mother to child at birth or soon after, and also through s*xual contact, contaminated blood transfusions and needles. Hepatitis B may scar the liver (cirrhosis) and lead to liver cancer.

HEPATITIS C: Formerly known as "non-A, non-B hepatitis," hepatitis C is the most common form of viral hepatitis. While it can be transmitted through contaminated blood transfusions and/or needles, for a substantial number of patients, the cause is unknown. It may scar the liver. Hepatitis C infection is common in about 25 percent of people who are HIV-positive. Hepatitis C also infects up to 90 percent of HIV-infected injection drug users. And it is more severe in patients with HIV.

HEPATITIS D: This form most often infects intravenous (IV) drug users who are also carriers of the hepatitis B virus. It is spread only in the presence of the hepatitis B virus and is transmitted in the same ways. Hepatitis D is a serious health problem because it occurs in those with hepatitis B, increasing the severity of symptoms associated with hepatitis B.

HEPATITIS E: Similar to hepatitis A, hepatitis E is prevalent in countries with poor sanitation. It is rare in North America and rarely life threatening.

FAST FACTS
Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. With hepatitis, the liver stops working well.
Viruses cause most hepatitis. Viral hepatitis is the most common cause of liver disease in the world.

At least five different viruses cause hepatitis in people. Hepatitis A and E are spread through contaminated food, water, and human waste. Hepatitis B, C, and D are spread through an infected person's blood or body fluids.
Hepatitis B, C, and D can cause long-lasting problems, including liver scarring (cirrhosis) and cancer.

WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol is a waxy substance that's found in the fats (lipids) in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease.

When you have high cholesterol, you may develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually, these deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. Your heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the risk of a heart attack. Decreased blood flow to your brain can cause a stroke.

High cholesterol can be inherited, but it's often the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices, and thus preventable and treatable. A healthy diet, regular exercise and sometimes medication can go a long way toward reducing high cholesterol.

SYMPTOMS
High cholesterol has no symptoms. A blood test is the only way to detect high cholesterol.

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

Ask your doctor if you should have a cholesterol test. Recommendations for the age of first screening vary. Retesting is usually performed every five years.

If your test results aren't within desirable ranges, your doctor may recommend more frequent measurements. Your doctor may also suggest you have more frequent tests if you have a family history of high cholesterol, heart disease or other risk factors, such as smoking, diabetes or high blood pressure.

CAUSES
Cholesterol is carried through your blood, attached to proteins. This combination of proteins and cholesterol is called a lipoprotein. You may have heard of different types of cholesterol, based on what type of cholesterol the lipoprotein carries. They are:

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL). LDL, or "bad," cholesterol transports cholesterol particles throughout your body. LDL cholesterol builds up in the walls of your arteries, making them hard and narrow.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL, or "good," cholesterol picks up excess cholesterol and takes it back to your liver.

Factors within your control — such as inactivity, obesity and an unhealthy diet — contribute to high LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol.

Factors beyond your control may play a role, too. For example, your genetic makeup may keep cells from removing LDL cholesterol from your blood efficiently or cause your liver to produce too much cholesterol.

RISK FACTORS
Factors that may increase your risk of high cholesterol include:

POOR DIET
Eating saturated fat, found in animal products, and trans fats, found in some commercially baked cookies and crackers, can raise your cholesterol level. Foods that are high in cholesterol, such as red meat and full-fat dairy products, will also increase your total cholesterol.

OBESITY
Having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater puts you at risk of high cholesterol.
Large waist circumference. Your risk increases if you are a man with a waist circumference of at least 40 inches (102 centimeters) or a woman with a waist circumference of at least 35 inches (89 centimeters).

LACK OF EXERCISE
Exercise helps boost your body's HDL, or "good," cholesterol while increasing the size of the particles that make up your LDL, or "bad," cholesterol, which makes it less harmful.

SMOKING
Cigarette smoking damages the walls of your blood vessels, making them likely to accumulate fatty deposits. Smoking may also lower your level of HDL, or "good," cholesterol.

DIABETES
High blood sugar contributes to higher LDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol. High blood sugar also damages the lining of your arteries.

COMPLICATIONS

DEVELOPMENT OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS
High cholesterol can cause atherosclerosis, a dangerous accumulation of cholesterol and other deposits on the walls of your arteries. These deposits (plaques) can reduce blood flow through your arteries, which can cause complications, such as:

CHEST PAIN
If the arteries that supply your heart with blood (coronary arteries) are affected, you may have chest pain (angina) and other symptoms of coronary artery disease.

HEART ATTACK
If plaques tear or rupture, a blood clot may form at the plaque-rupture site — blocking the flow of blood or breaking free and plugging an artery downstream. If blood flow to part of your heart stops, you'll have a heart attack.

STROKE
Similar to a heart attack, if blood flow to part of your brain is blocked by a blood clot, a stroke occurs.

PREVENTION
The same heart-healthy lifestyle changes that can lower your cholesterol can help prevent you from having high cholesterol in the first place. To help prevent high cholesterol, you can:

* Eat a low-salt diet that includes many fruits, vegetables and whole grains
* Limit the amount of animal fats and use good fats in moderation
* Lose extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight
* Quit smoking
* Exercise on most days of the week for at least 30 minutes
* Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all

HOW DOES DIABETES AFFECT THE BODY?

Diabetes has a substantial effect on the body.
Knowing how diabetes affects your body can help you look after your body and prevent diabetic complications from developing.

Many of the effects of diabetes stem from the same guilty parties; namely high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a lack of blood glucose control.

SIGNS OF DIABETES
When undiagnosed or uncontrolled, the effects of diabetes on the body can be noticed by the classic symptoms of diabetes, namely:

INCREASED THIRST
FREQUENT NEED TO URINATE
FATIGUE
BLURRED VISION and
TINGLING OR PAIN IN THE HANDS, FEET AND/or LEGS
LONG TERM EFFECTS OF DIABETES ON THE BODY

In addition to the symptoms, diabetes can cause long term damage to our body. The long term damage is commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

Diabetes affects our blood vessels and nerves and therefore can affect any part of the body.

However, certain parts of our body are affected more than other parts.

Diabetic complications will usually take a number of years of poorly controlled diabetes to develop. Complications are not a certainty and can be kept at bay and prevented by maintaining a strong level of control on your diabetes, your blood pressure and cholesterol.

These can all be helped by keeping to a healthy diet, avoiding ci******es and alcohol, and incorporating regular activity into your daily regime in order to keep blood sugar levels within recommended blood glucose level guidelines.

THE EFFECT OF DIABETES ON THE HEART

Diabetes and coronary heart disease are closely related.

Diabetes contributes to high blood pressure and is linked with high cholesterol which significantly increases the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease.

DIABETES AND STROKES
Similar to how diabetes affects the heart, high blood pressure and cholesterol raises the risk of strokes.

HOW DIABETES AFFECTS THE EYES
A relatively common complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy.

As with all complications, this condition is brought on by a number of years of poorly controlled or uncontrolled diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy has a number of symptoms.

Retinopathy is caused by blood vessels in the back of the eye (the retina) swelling and leaking. High blood pressure is also a contributing factor for diabetic retinopathy

THE EFFECT OF DIABETES ON THE NERVES AND BLOOD VESSELS CAN ALSO LEAD TO PROBLEMS INCLUDING:

Trouble with digestion
Sexual dysfunction
Slow wound healing
People with diabetes have an increased risk of developing complications but not everyone does.

To reduce the chances of developing problems associated with diabetes, people are advised to take steps to improve their health and blood sugar levels. A good diet and regular activity is an important step in helping to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol and improve blood sugar levels.

EFFECT OF DIABETES ON THE KIDNEYS
The kidneys are another organ that is at particular risk of damage as a result of diabetes and the risk is again increased by poorly controlled diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Diabetic nephropathy is the term for kidney disease as a result of diabetes.

Damage to the kidneys takes place over a period of years and can picked up by nephropathy screening before it gets too serious. Treatment includes lifestyle changes and may include medicine to treat high blood pressure and cholesterol.

DIABETES AND IT'S EFFECTS ON THE NERVES
The effects of diabetes on the nerves can be serious as the nerves are involved in so many of our bodily functions, from movement and digestion through to s*x and reproduction.

The presence of nerve damage (neuropathy) is commonly noticed by:

Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
Lack of arousal in the p***s or cl****is
Excessive sweating or
Diagnosis of delayed stomach emptying

DIABETES AND ITS EFFECT ON DIGESTION
Diabetes can affect digestion in a number of ways. If diabetes has caused nerve damage, this can lead to nausea, constipation or diarrhoea.

HOW DIABETES AFFECTS THE SKIN
Diabetes affect on the skin is usually a result of its affect on the nerves and circulation which can lead to dry skin, slow healing of cuts, burns and wounds, fungal and bacterial infections and loss of feeling in the foot.

People with diabetes are recommended to have their feet checked at least once a year. The effect of diabetes on the feet is often referred to as diabetic foot.

REMEDIES FOR RINGWORM

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin that is quite common and contagious.

It is caused by fungi that live on the top layer of the skin, feed on keratin in the skin, and thrive in warm, moist areas. The infection causes a circle, with a dark border in the shape of a ring.

👉 GARLIC
Garlic has excellent antifungal properties that help heal ringworm. Crush two cloves of garlic. Rub them on the ringworm eruption several times a day. To be done for four to five days or until the condition improves.

👉 THE NEEM LEAVE
Neem, or Indian lilac leaves, have antiseptic and antimicrobial properties that help treat ringworm, scabies, and various skin infections.
Apply neem oil to the affected area once a day for a few days until the infection clears. You can also apply half a teaspoon of neem oil mixed with a cup of aloe vera gel. Mix crushed neem leaves, turmeric powder and sesame oil. Apply this paste on the affected area.

👉 APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Apple cider vinegar is excellent for curing skin infections such as ringworm because of its antimicrobial and astringent properties. Dip a cotton swab in cider vinegar and apply on the affected area. Remedy to do, two or three times a day for a few days or until you see an improvement.

👉 TEA TREE OIL
Tea tree oil is another natural remedy widely used for ringworm because of its antifungal and antiseptic qualities. Put a few drops of tea tree oil on a cotton ball and dab on the affected area. Operation to do, two or three times a day for a week or two. You can also dilute the tea tree oil in an equal amount of water or carrier oil and then apply it.

👉 LAVENDER OIL can also be used locally to eliminate ringworm and soothe the skin.

👉 THE RAW PAPAYA
Raw papaya also kills fungi that cause ringworm because of its antifungal properties. Rub a slice of raw papaya on the affected area. Leave on for at least 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Do this at least twice a day for a few days.
