Blood pressure lowering drugs often cause a range of unpleasant side effects, which helps to explain the growing interest in potentially effective natural remedies, such as garlic.
Allicin, the main active compound in garlic, is thought to be largely responsible for garlic’s blood-pressure-lowering properties.

Research studies shows that allicin helps to prevent the production of angiotensin II, a compound responsible for increasing blood pressure by causing your blood vessels to tighten up or contract. By preventing the production of angiotensin II, allicin’s effects make it easier for your blood to flow freely, in turn, reducing your blood pressure.

Allicin also appears to increase the production or availability of hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide, two compounds crucial for regulating blood pressure levels. Moreover, experts believe that garlic’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may further contribute to garlic’s ability to reduce or prevent rises in blood pressure level.

Cancer risk is something the alcohol industry won’t tell you about, but why doesn’t your doctor? There’s relatively little public awareness of the link between alcohol intake and cancer, and the medical community continues to largely remain silent.

Alcohol consumption has been associated with excessive mortality from cancer for more than a century. Even at low levels of intake, it can cause cancer–mostly head, neck, and gastrointestinal cancers in men and breast cancer in women. Given this and if there are only harms without any benefits, then the ideal alcohol intake on a routine, day-to-day basis should be zero.

But, doesn’t moderate drinking protect against cardiovascular disease? If so, isn’t some alcohol beneficial overall? These are exactly the kinds of questions I address in this four-part series.

Eat Your Water 💦

When we eat more water-rich foods, we absorb water more slowly because it is trapped in the structure of these foods. Water in food stays in our bodies longer, with a multitude of additional benefits.

By eating your water, you are not only hydrating with H2O, but are also filling your body with everything it needs to become strong and healthy. Our bodies are constantly regenerating, creating new cells to replace old, damaged ones. So, it is important that we eat and drink with a deliberate focus on promoting cellular health.

The best way to do this is to keep our body saturated with cell-building elements such as vitamin A, alpha lipoic acid, oleic acid, polyphenols, folic acid and vitamin C. These nutrients can all be found in water

Eat the Rainbow VI

White ◻️, Tan and Brown 🍂

Yes I know, the colors white, tan and brown aren’t in the real rainbow, but they are an important part of our food rainbow. This week we will be wrapping up the Eat the Rainbow series with this dull but important color.
Colour isn’t the only indicator of phytonutrient content, and just because they don’t have the vibrant colourful pigments that other fruits and vegetables have, it doesn’t mean they don’t have any nutritional value. These fruits and veggies are chock-full of flavonoids, the powerful antioxidants that mop up free-radicals, counteracting the damage that can lead to cellular changes and disease.

This category of food includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, spices, and whole grains. These healthy foods have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. They also assist with liver and hormone health.

For instance, Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable rich in a healthy compound called sulforaphane. Garlic and onions are in the allium family of vegetables and contain the powerful compounds allicin and quercetin that help to reduce the risks of cancer and have anti-inflammatory properties. And selenium – found in mushrooms – plays a key role in supporting the immune system.

There are a few fruits available like pears, applesauce, coconut, dates, and lychees. The vegetable list includes cauliflower, garlic, onion, mushrooms, shallots, parsnips, turnips, bananas and potatoes.
Whole grains to consider when looking to eat in this category could be barley, rye, wheat and spelt, brown rice, purple rice, black rice, oats, millet, quinoa or farro. Brown liquids like coffee and tea are on the list.

Eat the rainbow V

Fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet. They are low in calories and jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre.
Remember, They fall into five different colour categories, red, orange/yellow, purple/blue, green and white/brown and each contain their own unique disease-busting chemicals called phytonutrients.

Purple 💜 and Blue 💙
Blue and purple foods contain anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that may help protect cells from damage and could reduce the risk of cancer, stroke, and heart disease. Beetroot, radishes, and purple cabbage are full of nitrates that can help lower blood pressure naturally. Fruits – the darker, the better – contain phytochemicals that are known to repair damage from stress and inflammation.

Healthy purple food includes eggplant, purple cabbage, beetroot, radishes, purple carrots, black olives, berries (blueberries and blackberries), passion fruit, purple grapes, purple plums, prunes, and dark cherries.

EAT THE RAINBOW IV

GREEN 💚
Green colored fruits and vegetables are some of the healthiest foods you can eat.
They are rich in lutein, isothiocyanates, isoflavones, and vitamin K, which is essential for blood and bone health. Leafy green vegetables are loaded with antioxidants and folates: a nutrient that is especially valuable for pregnant women. Greens like Kale has as much calcium as milk and cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli could enhance your immune system and contain properties that could block cancer.

Green food helps lower blood pressure, improve heart function, reduces cardiovascular disease, and improves vision. And oh yeah, it also improves skin health, leaving you with a radiant, youthful glow.

Healthy green vegetables and fruits include leafy vegetables (kale, romaine lettuce, collard greens, spinach, swiss chard, bok choy, and arugula), broccoli, brussels sprouts, asparagus, zucchini, edamame, green beans, celery, cucumbers, peas (green peas, snow peas, snap peas), avocado, kiwi, green grapes, and green apples.

EAT THE RAINBOW III
When it comes to healthy eating, so much advice seems to center on what not to put in our mouths that it's easy to forget that there's a whole world of foods out there that are great for you.
Different colors offers different benefits, which is why it’s so important to eat the spectrum!

Yellow 💛 and Orange 🧡
The orange colored fruits and vegetables provide a variety of important nutrients in the diet. This vibrant color can enhance a bright and energizing mood as well as nourish the body.

The abundance of antioxidants, vitamins, fiber and phytonutrients in orange and yellow foods are good for your skin, hair, eyes and heart, and they may also reduce the risk of cancer.

We all need Vitamin C. Orange-colored fruit is packed with it, as well as carotenoids, including beta-carotene. Your body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A, which promotes healthy vision. Orange is also the color of many citrus fruits, which can help increase your blood flow and reduce your risk of having a stroke. And don’t forget to indulge in pumpkin, sweet potatoes or carrots. You can find these benefits in peaches, corn, cantaloupe and, well, oranges, too.
Eating the yellow part of the fruit and vegetable rainbow gives you many of the same benefits as eating foods that fall under the orange layer — vitamin C and carotenoids. Brighten up your plate with
some sweet corn, yellow bell peppers, pineapple, banana, squash or lemons.

Eating the rainbow of different colored fruits and vegetables is a fundamentally healthy way to eat. This isn't just another fad diet like only eating white food or the grapefruit diet. Our bodies need a variety of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals to stay healthy, and nature has color coded these for us.
People tend to repeatedly eat the foods they like and miss out on a host of health benefits that come from consuming a wide range of fruits and vegetables. The easiest way to assure you eat what you need is to eat the rainbow and have two servings a day from every color group

In subsequent post, we'd show you a color guide to eating as nature intended.
