*Ebute Metta General Hospital Marks World Glaucoma Week with Awareness Campaign*

Ebute Metta General Hospital (EBGH) proudly joins the global community in celebrating World Glaucoma Week 2025, observed from March 10th to 15th.

The theme for this year is "Uniting for a Glaucoma - free world," emphasizing the importance of collaboration in early detection, timely treatment, and prevention of vision loss.

This annual event aims to raise awareness about glaucoma, often referred to as the “silent thief of sight.”

Glaucoma, being the second leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world, is a collection of eye problems that damages the optic nerve typically as a result of elevated Intra ocular pressure(IOP).

As part of this year’s activities, the EBGH Eye Clinic organized educational and informative sessions at the General Outpatients Department (GOPD) and the Child Welfare wing targeting patients visiting Family Medicine clinic also. Patients were enlightened about the risks, prevention, and management of glaucoma.

Speaking at the event, the Head of the Eye Clinic, Nurse Olukemi Olulana ( ADNS), said that statistically, about 80 million people worldwide; and about 50% of these people are from developing countries.

She highlighted that the World Glaucoma Week is a global campaign to raise awareness about glaucoma.

Mrs. Olulana further explained that the real cause of glaucoma is not known, but there are some risk factors like
Age - above 40 years; family background, high Intra ocular pressure (IOP); cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and diabetics; prolonged use of steroids, trauma, or injury to the eye.

Nurse Oridota Abimbola also urged individuals to pay attention to changes in their vision and seek prompt medical attention by visiting eye clinic for eye care.

She stressed that adopting a healthy lifestyle can help in reducing the risk of developing glaucoma.

ADNS Olulana rounded up the week program by strongly encouraging everyone to schedule an eye check-up at least once a year, as early detection is key to preventing vision loss.
