For centuries, people have used hibiscus seeds, flowers, leaves and stems in food and traditional medicine. Today, you can find hibiscus-flavored jams, jellies, sauces, syrups and teas throughout the world.
The ingredient is especially popular in Western Africa, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Also known as roselle or sorrel, it’s been used to treat everything from high blood pressure to indigestion.
Modern science also supports the idea that this time-tested remedy offers a variety of health benefits. But Czerwony cautions that we need more research to know exactly how hibiscus supplements can help treat certain conditions.

Health benefits of hibiscus tea

So, what exactly is the power of hibiscus? Czerwony explains some of its health benefits.

1. Protects with antioxidants

The hibiscus plant is rich in antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin C and anthocyanin. “Antioxidant-rich foods really help across the board with quite a few health conditions,” Czerwony says.
Antioxidants destroy harmful molecules known as free radicals within your body. Free radicals cause damage to cells that contribute to diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. While your body uses its own antioxidants to fight free radical damage, antioxidant-rich foods may also play a role in preventing disease.

2. Fights inflammation

Several animal studies and a few small human studies have shown hibiscus’s ability to fight inflammation, Czerwony says.
Inflammation plays a role in the development of many illnesses, including cancer, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis. While more research is needed, it seems that hibiscus may offer helpful anti-inflammatory effects.

3. Lowers blood pressure

High blood pressure affects nearly half of all adults in the U.S., leading to serious health problems like heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease. In clinical trials, drinking hibiscus tea has been shown to lower blood pressure in humans.
However, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health points out that hibiscus and other herbal remedies only slightly lower blood pressure.
They can’t replace medications for those who’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure.

4. Lowers cholesterol

High cholesterol is another health problem that affects millions of adults and contributes to serious diseases like heart attack and stroke. While some clinical studies have shown hibiscus lowers cholesterol levels, others have shown little effect.
Czerwony says hibiscus may help maintain healthy cholesterol levels, but once again, we need more research to be sure.

5. Promotes weight loss

Several studies show a positive impact on weight loss, which could help prevent obesity — but these studies used hibiscus extract, a more concentrated form than hibiscus tea. Czerwony notes that we don’t yet know whether hibiscus tea produces the same result.

6. Fights bacteria

In laboratory studies, hibiscus extract kept certain types of bacteria in check. While it’s clear hibiscus has antibacterial properties, researchers are studying its effectiveness in people.

7. Supports liver health

Hibiscus helps keep the liver healthy, according to several studies. The extract protects the liver from a variety of toxins, likely due to its powerful antioxidant activity. It’s even demonstrated some anti-cancer activity in laboratory tests of liver cells.

Is hibiscus safe?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers hibiscus safe when consumed in food. However, it’s possible to have an allergic reaction to the plant. In very high doses, hibiscus may cause liver damage.
“You can certainly add hibiscus into your diet safely,” Czerwony says. But she recommends talking with your healthcare provider, as it could interact with some medicines.

What’s the best way to take hibiscus?

Ready to take the plunge? Hibiscus is available in several forms:

Tea: You can make hibiscus tea by steeping dried hibiscus buds (called calyxes) in boiling water. If you’re not into the DIY method, you can also purchase dried hibiscus or hibiscus tea bags.

Powder: You can also buy hibiscus as a powder, which is made from dried plant parts that are finely ground. Mix the powder with water to make a beverage.

Extract: Hibiscus extract is a concentrated liquid form of the supplement. You can buy it from health food or herbal supplement retailers.

Czerwony recommends drinking hibiscus tea rather than powder or extract. “Hibiscus tea — whether you buy it already prepared, use tea bags or steep it yourself from the dried plant — is the least expensive and most readily available,” she says. And the powders and extracts may differ in strength and concentration, so you may be getting a dose that’s too strong.

What Are Jute Leaves? Nutrition, Benefits, and How to Eat Them

If you’ve never heard of jute leaves before, perhaps this article will convince you to try this wildly popular leafy green that’s cultivated in Southeast Asia, West Africa, and the Middle East.

Depending on the region, jute leaves are also referred to as edewu, ayoyo, and rau day, among many other names.

Jute leaves tend to have a bitter taste, though their taste may vary based on their age. Those that are harvested while young are typically more tender and flavorful, while older leaves may be earthier and more fibrous.

Since jute leaves have a slippery texture, they’re often used as a thickening agent in soups, stews, and curries. They’re quite versatile and can be found frozen, fresh, or dried.

Jute leaves are low in calories and contain numerous important vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A and C, riboflavin, folate, and iron.

Cooked jute appears to offer higher concentrations of these vitamins and minerals. However, that’s because a cooked cup of jute leaves contains about three times the number of leaves.

Potential health benefits of jute leaves

Beyond culinary uses, jute leaves have been used for medicinal purposes in Ayurvedic healing for centuries.
Here are a few potential health benefits of cooked jute leaves.

May help protect against inflammation

Omega-3 fats are important for brain development and can help reduce inflammation in the body. Which foods come to mind when you think of omega-3 fats? For many people, fatty fish, nuts, and vegetable oils pop up.

However, omega-3 fats can be found in vegetables, too, and jute leaves are one example. In fact, one study found that jute leaves have the highest concentration of omega-3 fats of any reported vegetable.

Keep in mind that jute leaves only provide alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is converted into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) — the active forms that your body needs.

However, the conversion rate is low, coming in at 5–8%, so think of jute leaves as modest contributors to overall omega-3 intake rather than a strong source.

Jute leaves also contain lycopene, an antioxidant that protects your cells against oxidative damage, which increases your disease risk. Their lycopene content can vary by the preparation method. For example, cooked jute leaves and older jute leaves have higher levels .

Finally, jute leaves may have an anti-inflammatory effect on the liver. A study examined rats who ate jute leaves daily for 30 days. At the end of the study, the rats had improved liver antioxidant statuses.

Keep in mind that the results of rat studies can’t necessarily be applied to human health, so more research in humans is needed. However, these early results are promising.​​

May help improve bone health

Jute leaves are high in calcium and magnesium, two minerals that are essential for daily bodily functions. The combination of both minerals is especially important in maintaining bone health, as they work in tandem to help form and maintain strong bones and teeth.

One cup (87 grams) of cooked leaves contains 184 mg of calcium and 54 mg of magnesium, which are 14% and 13% of the DV for adults, respectively.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body, and the majority of it is stored in your bones and teeth. Without magnesium, your bones can’t efficiently absorb calcium.

Over a long period of high calcium intake and poor magnesium intake, calcium can eventually deposit in your blood vessels and kidneys, causing kidney stones and increasing your risk of heart disease.

Furthermore, a poor calcium-to-magnesium ratio may also increase your risk of developing osteoporosis, as the bones aren’t able to absorb that essential calcium.

Balancing your calcium and magnesium intake ratio is a careful dance, and skewed ratios can be dangerous. The optimal ratio seems to be a 2-to-1 calcium-to-magnesium ratio.

Bear in mind that vitamin D and vitamin K are two other crucial nutrients for bone health, neither of which are found in jute leaves.

Support the immune system

Your immune system defends your body against disease and requires several nutrients to function optimally. Eating jute leaves can support your immune system’s ability to fight infection by providing some of those nutrients.

A cup (87 grams) of cooked jute has 28.7 mg of vitamin C, or 32% of the DV for adults. Getting enough of this vitamin helps create pathogen-destroying immune cells, reducing your disease risk. Plus, vitamin C helps reduce inflammation, heal wounds, and maintain healthy skin.

Vitamin A is another potent antioxidant that’s abundant in jute leaves, with 259 mcg of vitamin A per cooked cup (87 grams). That’s 25% of the DV for adults.

Vitamin A is critical for enhancing immune function. In fact, it helps produce and regulate immune cells and has demonstrated therapeutic effects in treating infections.

However, processing methods may affect jute leaves’ nutrient density. One study found that processing jute leaves decreases their provitamin A carotenoid levels, while boiling jute leaves causes even larger losses

Potential downside of eating jute leaves

Food allergies can be life threatening, causing dangerous reactions when those who have them come into contact with certain foods. In these cases, the body’s immune system reacts and can result in hives, swelling of the mouth or lips, and respiratory problems.

While jute leaves aren’t among the top food allergens, it’s recommended to avoid them if you experience any side effects after consuming them. If ingestion occurs and symptoms arise, visit your nearest emergency department as soon as possible.
