Staphylococcus is a genus of bacteria made up of gram-positive, round-shaped (cocci) organisms that often form clusters resembling bunches of grapes.
β’ They are facultative anaerobes, meaning they can survive with or without oxygen.
β’ More than 30 species exist, but the most clinically significant is Staphylococcus aureus.
β’ Other important members include S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus, and S. lugdunensis.
Where itβs found
β’ Staphylococci are normal flora on the skin and mucous membranes (especially the nose, armpits, and groin).
β’ They become problematic when they enter the bloodstream, wounds, or other normally sterile areas.
Types of Staphylococcus infections
β’ Staphylococcus aureus β causes most serious infections (skin abscesses, pneumonia, sepsis).
β’ Coagulase-negative staphylococci (e.g., S. epidermidis) β usually less aggressive but can cause infections in people with medical devices (catheters, prosthetic joints).
β’ S. saprophyticus β often linked to urinary tract infections in young women.
Common Symptoms of Staphylococcus Infections
Symptoms depend on the site of infection, but common patterns include:
Skin & Soft Tissue Infections
β’ Red, swollen, warm, and painful bumps (boils, abscesses, carbuncles).
β’ Pus drainage.
β’ Impetigo (honey-colored crusts, often in children).
β’ Cellulitis (spreading redness and swelling).
Food Poisoning (due to staphylococcal enterotoxin)
β’ Rapid onset (1β6 hours after eating contaminated food).
β’ Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps.
β’ Diarrhea.
β’ Usually short-lived (24β48 hours).
Respiratory Infections
β’ Cough, chest pain, fever, shortness of breath (if pneumonia develops).
β’ Can cause severe necrotizing pneumonia in some cases.
Bone, Joint & Deep Infections
β’ Osteomyelitis (bone pain, swelling, fever).
β’ Septic arthritis (red, hot, swollen joints, difficulty moving joint).
Systemic & Bloodstream Infections
β’ Fever, chills, low blood pressure (sepsis).
β’ Endocarditis (infection of heart valves) β chest pain, heart murmur, fatigue.
β’ Toxic shock syndrome (rare but life-threatening) β sudden high fever, rash, low blood pressure, multi-organ involvement.
NB:
β’ Staphylococcus bacteria are common on the body but can cause infections ranging from mild skin problems to life-threatening diseases.
β’ Common symptoms include redness, swelling, pus, fever, pain at the infection site, and in severe cases, sepsis or shock.
