WBW Pumping and storing breast milk
Cleanliness, consistency and comfort are key- wash and dry your hands and all breast pump parts; pump in a clean comfortable location and try to pump at the same times everyday
If baby is not nursing, aim for 8 to 10 pumping sessions in 24 hours including at night for the first few weeks

Store milk in small amounts – 30, 60 and 90 ml bags to avoid waste- and label every container with date and time- preferably use BPA free bottles or breastmilk storage bags
Leave 2-3 cm of open space at the top of containers- milk expands when frozen
Never use a microwave to thaw milk, instead, thaw in fridge overnight or by placing sealed container in a bowl of warm- not hot- water; swirl gently to mix separated fat, and use within two hours of warming. Never refreeze

Freshly pumped breastmilk can be stored in the freezer for 6 months; in the fridge, not in the door, but at the back of the fridge for up to 4 days; and in room temperature (up to 25 degrees centigrade) for up to 4 hours . Previously frozen milk which has been thawed in the fridge MUST be consumed within 24 hours or discarded. Milk thawed from fridge to room temperature must be consumed within two hours.
First in First Out: Always use the oldest milk first

WBW Breastfeeding support

Mums need support from family and friends to help them successfully breastfeed- a helping hand with doing the dishes, a helping hand with school runs and homework with older children, and bringing some home cooked food is always welcome
Taking the baby off her hands to burp and play while she catches a nap is always a good idea for your breastfeeding friend or family member.
Online lactation support is available- we are here to help, and so are your nurses at the local primary health or maternity center.
Mothers groups are a dependable source of information and good suggestions; they can also help bust myths about breastfeeding and provide information on where to get good breastfeeding supplies including breast pumps.

Day 4 WBW 2025
How might you optimize breastfeeding - facilitating lactation in the early days
Remember that the earliest milk is in small supply but it is calorie dense The more frequently you put baby to breast, the more milk flows- so frequency is the key to success. Babies must be fed exclusively on breast milk and on demand.
To establish breastfeeding successfully, mum must be adequately rested, she must sleep regularly, and breastfeed exclusively- no water, no breast milk supplements. Try not to be anxious about breastfeeding success, as this can reduce your milk flow.
The night feeds ( between 11 pm and 5 pm) are an important stimulus for ensuring breast milk flow for the next day- mum’s breastfeeding hormones are best stimulated at night.
Pap and tigernuts are good galactagogues-( substances that help improve breast milk production), and can help mums who are also getting adequate rest and sleep.

- Staying hydrated and fueled
- Asking for help when needed
- Practicing mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques.

Day 3 WBW 2025

Colostrum – Golden Milk

β€’ Colostrum has growth factors and provides all the nutrients and fluid baby needs in the early days
β€’ It is rich in Vitamin A and prevents Vitamin A-related eye disease
β€’ Helps intestine mature immunologically; prevents allergy and intolerance
β€’ Contains antibodies and many white blood cells that protect baby against infections and reduces severity of infections such as measles and diarrhoea
β€’ Colostrum helps to clear meconium (the first dark stools) and helps prevent jaundice

Day 2 WBW 2025

Why is early breastfeeding important?

Early initiation of breatfeeding simply means the newborn begins to be breastfed within the first hour of life-the Golden Hour

The action of putting the newborn against the mother’s skin within the first 60 minutes of life stabilizes the health of both mom and baby.

The first hour of life is a critical time to initiate breastfeeding because babies who initiate early are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to exclusively breastfeed at 3 to 6 months compared to those who initiate later;

They are also less likely to experience delays in lactation onset and breastfeeding difficulties.

Even though there is not much milk ( about 5mls at every feed) coming out of the breast in the first few days, all that comes out is enough for baby’s needs in those first few days.

Unlocking the power of Breast Milk: the benefits of breastfeeding for baby, mother, family, community and the environment.

The benefits of Breastfeeding for baby are numerous and include

1. Nutritional benefits- breast milk has all the nutrients the baby needs to gorw optimally in the first six months of life

2. Breast milk is readily available at the right temperature, and it is affordable, accessible and safe
