Today is 'World Hypertension Day'. Hypertension is one of the major complications of persistent high blood sugar (diabetes), also diabetes is a major complication of hypertension! The 'Dawn Phenomenon' usually happens in uncontrolled blood sugar where you go to bed with a normal blood glucose readings and wake up to a high fasting blood glucose readings. The Dawn Phenomenon happens between 3 and 8a.m when the body is preparing for waking up by releasing cortisol and other hormones into the blood stream, the hormones make the body less sensitive to insulin, contributing to blood sugar spike in the morning.
To prevent spike in fasting blood sugar;
1. Exercise Regularly, walking is adequate. Walk after each meals to boost your metabolism and increase insulin sensitivity.
2. Make sure your last meal of the day is eaten as early as possible, 6pm is usually the advised time, latest 7pm and eat food that will not cause spike in blood sugar.
3. Check your blood sugar in the night and stay hydrated.

For every hour of sitting, if your work is sedentary, make sure you take at least 5 minutes to walk around!

One of the major causes of blood sugar swing is dehydration: if you have low fluids intake, water specifically, it can lead to hyperglycemia, as the sugar in your circulation becomes more concentrated. Concentrated high blood sugar also causes you to urinate more, thereby leading to more dehydration and a vicious cycle of hyperglycemia. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water at least 3 litres a day to avoid concentrated high blood sugar!

Follow the following instructions to manage high blood sugar!!!

1. Totally avoid and stop eating all processed foods.
2. Totally avoid and stop eating all deep fried foods, you can opt for air frying🙂
3. Eat breakfast between 8am and 10am, make sure your breakfast is a light meal and is fibre rich and also has low glycaemic index.
4. Eat lunch between 12pm and 2pm, depending on when you took your breakfast to allow for at least 4 hours interval between them and breakfast has been digested. Your heaviest meals of each day should be taken at this time🙏🏿
5. Dinner should be between 4pm and 6pm and strictly not later than 6pm to allow for proper digestion before you sleep. Meals at this time should be light too, easily digestible and have low glycaemic index too.
6. Drink enough water, at least 3Litres each day. Make sure you drink water with your food and specifically between an hour or 2 after meals. This is necessary because spikes from our food happens between 1 to 2 hours of eating, water can dilute the glucose spike and balance the dips.
7. You can snack between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner with fruits, seeds and nuts.
8. Totally avoid processed white sugar and sweeteners. Replace with raw honey or date powder. Raw honey and date powder have a better balanced spikes and dips in our body when taken but take note not to exceed a tablespoon/day.
9. If you live a sedentary lifestyle or your work is mostly sedentary, for every hour of sitting, endeavour to stand and walk around or do light exercises around your desk for 5 minutes. Endeavour to repeat every hour🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
10. To boost your metabolism, whenever you eat, especially heavy meals, walk around for 3 to 5 minutes, it really helps to boost your metabolism. Note please, walk not exercise 🙏🏿
11. To help with insulin sensitivity , do light exercises in the evening, about 2 hours after dinner for 15 to 20 minutes🙏🏿
Note please🙏🏿light exercises not heavy exercises🙏🏿
12. Try to incorporate at least 30 minutes walking into your schedule everyday, if you can do this in the morning, good! It will increase your body's metabolic processes.
