One time while conducting a training for staff of a hotel on workplace safety; workers and employer's responsibilities, staff had a question.
He asked, " My doctor says that I have too much chlorine in my blood and it's causing some damage to my kidney. Could this be from the chlorine we use for the pool and the cleaning solution we use in the hotel?"
I asked, "Sir,do you wear a mask for this activity?He said, "No".
"Okay, what about gloves?
"No"
"Sir, were you trained on how to handle that chemical safely?"
"Not really, I just watched the other guy who was doing it before I was employed about 5 years ago."

After the class, we took him in for consultation with the company's HR, for medical checks and reassignment to another department. Afterwards, we assessed the activity and put in place appropriate control measures for it. The workers put in place for that activity were all trained for it..

When I checked back, I was informed that the situation was actually worse than what the young man had thought.

Now, a lot of us are just like this young man. Some of the activities you engage with at work are silently killing you. There has been an upsurge of slumped and died events in the news of late. Are you protected from the toxic fumes at work?
