*Gastro-colic reflex*

When a baby sharply pulls away from the breast or bottle, fidgets, grunts, passes some gas or a p**p and then returns to feeding, this is due to the gastro-colic reflex. This is normal infant behavior.
Feeding stimulates the gastro-colic reflex, which triggers an urge to p**p. Sometimes a baby will p**p, sometimes pass gas, other times there will be nothing to show for his efforts. When observed during feeding this reflex is often mistaken as a sign of pain.

Hypersensitivity of the gastro-colic reflex, which presents as frequent spasms which occur in waves that continue on and off for hours, is one of the many theories on causes of infant colic in babies younger than 4 months.

The number of times a newborn poo is likely not a major concern, however the texture or how the poo looks like matters.

Once a baby's poo is not egusi-like, it's a concern.

What is fetal distress?

Fetal distress describes a condition when the fetus(baby in the womb) shows signs of distress(usually through abnormal heart beat) during late pregnancy or labor. Most healthcare providers have replaced the term fetal distress with non-reassuring fetal status (NRFS).

There are many reasons why the fetus could show signs of distress, such as labor, reactions to medications or issues with the umbilical cord or placenta. Fetal distress can be dangerous and cause complications for both you and the fetus. Your doctor and midwives look for signs of distress as part of your antenatal care.

There are several signs that mean labour might be starting, these are the most common signs:

- contractions or tightenings
- a "show", when the plug of mucus from your cervix (entrance to your womb, or uterus) comes away
- backache
- an urge to go to the toilet, which is caused by your baby's head pressing on your bowel
- your waters breaking

*How to differentiate between false and real labour*

During the final weeks of pregnancy, you may have contractions. But these contractions don't really signal the start of labor. These cramps are called false labor, or Braxton Hicks contractions.

Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular. They don't get closer together. They often go away when you walk around, rest, or change position. Contractions due to real labor tend to be regular, get closer together, get stronger, and continue even with position changes, rest, or movement.

To tell real labor from false labor, time the length of your contractions. This is the time from the start of one contraction to the start of the next contraction. Also note the time between them.

*GESTATIONAL DIABETES*

This is a health condition whereby hormones produced by placenta prevents the body from using insulin hormone effectively, thereby leading to glucose(sugar) build up in blood. Insulin is the hormone that helps the body to utilize glucose in the blood.

3. Start pregnancy at healthy weight.
4. Register in a hospital with competent doctor or gynae.

7. Early delivery of the baby either by va**na or c/s depending on the age of pregnancy.

Antibiotics do not dry blood.

What you or your baby or family member need while recovering from illness is good food (balance diet, adequate diet, healthy food).

If during the course of illness there is shortage of blood ( some infections can cause this), then blood tonic will be prescribed because it's necessary.

If the blood is ok, please let them be. It is not necessary to take blood tonic during or after each antibiotics intake .

Also bear in mind that blood tonic can render *some* antibiotics ineffective, especially when taken together.
Always ask your doctor if there is need for blood tonic, do not assume.

*Breastfeeding while pregnant*

Yes, your body will carry on with producing breastmilk while you're pregnant, so you'll be able to breastfeed.

While you're breastfeeding your toddler, your unborn baby will still get all the nutrients s/he needs from your body.

Make sure you're eating well, so you don't go short of nutrients yourself.
Keep taking your daily vitamins or supplements.
