Top 5 diseases that can lead to Disability or Death in Nigeria

Nigeria is a country with an estimated population of 180 million persons. Nigeria's doctor -to- patient ratio is 1:9,082, which is far below the WHO's recommendation. This shortage is caused by medical brain drain, leaving many people without access to medical care and in areas where they are accessible it has become too expensive for households to bear the burden of a sick relative.

Certain diseases are largely influenced by poor lifestyle choices, in a country with poor healthcare outcomes taking charge of your health therefore becomes increasingly paramount to prevent disability, poverty and death. Taking charge of your health also helps to improve the community and put less burden of healthcare costs on family and relatives.

Below are some of diseases that are preventable by making better lifestyle choices.

1) Stroke

High blood pressure is a leading cause of strokes and it usually has no symptoms. Be sure to often check your blood pressure levels. Being overweight increases the risk for stroke. Physical activity can help you stay healthy and lower your cholesterol and blood pressure levels which helps to minimuze the risks for stroke. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your chances of having a stroke. Quit while you can. Limit alcohol to a bare minumum, drinking too much alcohol raises your blood pressure. Recovery from stroke can be a lifelong journey and puts burden on family member and healthcare providers. Making simple lifestyle adjustments can help you avoid strokes and live a longer life free from disabilities.

2) Diabetes

Diabetes can increase the risk of disability, and people with diabetes are more likely to have disability than people without diabetes.
Complications from diabetes can lead to cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney failure , blindness which can all cause disability. Diabetes can cause rapid loss of muscle strength and quality. Diabetes can cause problems with the feet due to poor blood flow and nerve damage. Keeping your blood sugar levels low will help you overcome diabetes and complications from it.

3) Multiple joint Arthritis ( MJOA)

A degenerative condition that causes cartilage to break down in Multiple joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. It often affects weight- bearing joints like the hips, knees, spine. MJOA is more common in women than men.
MJOA can cause disability in many ways, including
+ Pain and immobility: Pain can occur when cartilage breaks down and bones rub together
+ Pain causes loss of muscle strength which affects mobility and independence.

Arthritis is a major risk for disability.

4) Obesity

Obesity and disability are linked in the elderly.
The prevalence and incidence of both obesity and disability are projected to increase in the coming decades.

Being overweight or obese puts one at the risk for cardiovascular diseases and mobility problems at age 50 and above.

The burden of obesity
Obesity has been shown to be independently related to cognitive decline due to its associated risk factors for vascular diseases e.g hypertension, Stroke, Heart diseases

Obesity is also associated with physical and functional decline. There is strength loss, lower body impairment and limitations in performing activities of daily living.
A change in lifestyle and a well designed moderate exercise program can help those that are overweight or obesed improve physical functioning, reduce pain, prevent heart related problems, improve independence and mobility.

Obesity and disability poses a great burden to family members and care givers. It puts a strain on physical and financial resources. Making timely adjustments may save months of pain faced by individuals who are disabled by obesity and stress faced by care givers and family members.

5) Low Back Pain

Low back pain is the leading cause of disability. It can affect quality of life and mental well- being. It can limit work activities and engagements with family and friends. Low back pain can be a dull or sharp pain. It can also cause pains that radiate to other parts of the body especially the legs. High physical stress from work is a risk factor for low back pain, other causes of low back pain can be spine related, when a nerve is compressed or injured distal spinal column.

Lifestyle Modification therapy can help you prevent being a victim of the above listed diseases that can cause disability or death.

Lifestyle Modification therapy is a treatment that combines diet, exercise, supplements and behavioural strategies to help people remain healthy over time.

At Lifecare Physiotherapy clinic and wellness Center, we provide lifestyle Modification Program that helps individuals who are at risk of disability from preventable diseases to take charge of their life by guiding them on diet modifications, supplements optimization, specific exercises , behavioural changes and cognitive strategies that build a mindset that favours long-term lifestyle changes.

How Shoes are causing Pain, Muscle weakness and Poor posture

Have you ever come home and kicked off your shoes with relief? You will know that footwear can have a big impact on your comfort. But did you know it can also cause bigger problems?

Improper shoes can result in pain, poor posture and damage to the joint structures. When we look at how the human body is built, we start with the feet. Feet are the foundation.

Wearing the wrong pair of shoes can increase your risk of developing foot pain, stress fractures, plantar fascists, worsen knee arthritis and more.

The most problematic shoes are :

~ High- heeled Shoes

Heel shoes wreck havoc on your feet. The height of the heel adds more stress on the balls of your feet. Ultra- high heels cause the most pain

~ Pointy Shoes or Shoes with a narrow toe box

Narrow shoe may be in style, but they can contribute to foot pain. Because the toe box is unnatural, it squeezes your toes together. If you wear pointy shoes regularly, the constant squeezing can lead to bunions and hammertoes.

~ Flip- Flops

It's tempting to wear flip-flops, however wearing flip-flops for hours on end can cause foot pain. The biggest problems with this type of sandals is that there is no arch support.

~ Wrong Shoes for your activity

Even well- fitting shoes can hurt your feet if you aren't wearing the right shoes for whatever activity or sport you're participating in.

~ Shoes that lack support

Your shoes might be the source of your foot pain if they aren't supportive enough for you. A good pair of shoes should be

• Supportive and Cushioned
• Designed for your arches( orthotics might help if your feet are flat)
• Breathable
• The right size

Why Shoes Matter

If your shoes don't fit right or arent supportive enough, you might have foot pain( calluses, blisters, etc) might also notice ankle, knee or hip pain. Investing in good quality shoes helps your feet, supports healthy alignment throughout the whole body.
And if you already have knee pain, studies show that wearing supportive shoes can reduce the load put on the knees thereby reducing pain and discomfor.

Why you should Walk Barefoot

Earthing, or grounding, is the simple act of making contact with the earth. It's as easy as taking your shoes and socks off and walking outside barefoot.

What are the benefits of earthing?

There are countless benefits to earthing, both physically and mentally.

Physically, earthing helps to release tension in the body, improve sleep, reduce inflammation, and boost your immune system. It can also help to reduce pain and speed up the healing process.

Mentally, earthing can help to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It can also help to improve focus and concentration, and increase feelings of calm and well-being.

Do you need some help with posture, back pain or joint pain? Our physiotherapists take a holistic approach to help you improve your lifestyle and make long-term changes.
