We need your donations! Call 08033266688 for more information. Thank you! We have a number of objectives but we are focused on three presently:
1. To raise the public’s awareness of kidney failure and its risk factors
2. To conduct free kidney screenings
3. To raise funds for transplant surgeries and post transplant medication for indigent Nigerians who need support
Raising Awareness:
We publish
and distribute pamphlets on kidney failure, risk factors and prevention. They are:
1. Kidney Failure: What You Need To Know (Our book)
2. Why you need A Urinalysis
3. High Blood Pressure and your Kidneys
4. Diabetes Mellitus and your Kidneys
5. Glomerulonephritis and your kidneys
6. Post Transplant Care
7. Are your Kidneys Healthy? We also publish a 17 part series called Kidney Knowledge Series in some daily newspapers. We published in Guardian Newspapers last year and we are currently publishing in ThisDay Newspapers(Sunday) and NEXT Newspapers(Wednesday). Conduct of Free Kidney Screenings:
This consists of basic kidney screening done free for the public and we follow up those with abnormal results. We did 3 in 2010 screening about 800 individuals. The first one in 2011 would be to mark the World Kidney Day coming up on March 10th, 2011. Raising Funds to Support Indigent Kidney Failure Patients:
In August 2009, we were part of the transplant of 13 yr old Joseph Iniovosa, the first pediatric kidney transplant case in sub Saharan Africa, in addition to the Lagos State Government and Transplant Links UK. NKF pays for his post transplant care since 2009. An Ethics committee was inaugurated in March, 2010 to be an independent body recommending beneficiaries that NKF would support from the letters of appeal sent. The 6 member committee consists of:
1. Prof Yemi Osinbanjo SAN
2. Pastor (Dr) Tony Rapu
3. Chief Emmanuel Odogwu
4. Prof A.F.B. Mabadeje
5. Imam Abdurrahman Ahmad
6. Chief Tunji Alapini
In 2010, we began funding the post transplant medications of 2 additional individuals, thereby making 3 that we support. At the onset, monthly costs was about N450, 000 for the 3 individuals but this has dropped to about N230, 000 monthly due to decreasing drug dosage and the switch to generic drugs. For 2011, we already have the recommendations of the Ethics committee in respect of beneficiaries but we are yet to commence our support. In addition, we have had audited accounts since 2008 done by Abayomi Dosunmu & Co, Lagos Island.
