Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. But did you know your diet can help reduce your risk?

As eye care professionals, we often emphasize medication and routine checkups for glaucoma—but lifestyle and nutrition matter just as much.

Here are 6 research-backed dietary habits that support glaucoma prevention and eye health:

✅ Eat more Omega-3 rich foods (e.g., salmon, chia seeds)

✅ Cut back on caffeine—1 cup max per day

✅ Add supplements (B1, B12, A, C, E, magnesium) under doctor’s advice

✅ Load up on leafy greens (like kale and spinach)

✅ Include antioxidant-rich foods (dark berries, beets, red cabbage)

✅ Stay hydrated—but avoid large amounts in one go

If you're managing glaucoma—or want to reduce your risk—these small dietary shifts can make a big difference.

4 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO WHEN YOU ARE WITH YOUR EYE DOCTOR

You have been waiting and now it is your turn. There you are sitting in front of your eye doctor.

My guess is that you are eager to have your eyes restored to peace, clarity, and good function.

So to help your Doctor treat you fast and better, these are 4 things you shouldn’t do when you are with your Eye Doctor.

1. Don’t be making phone calls. The process of consulting with your doctor involves flowing thoughts.

Interrupting that process with taking calls can lead to you forgetting what you wanted to tell the doctor.

The Doctor could also miss out on what he was trying to identify or wanted to tell you.

Turn your phone off or put it in silent mode.

If you must take the call, tell the caller that you will call back later that you are with your doctor.

2. Don’t let your complaint be a diagnosis. Don’t be among those persons who go online, read about their symptoms and conclude what their condition is.

Don’t do that. e.g. don’t say to the Doctor “I think I have Myopia”. Because many conditions have the same symptoms pattern.

Just tell the Doctor what your experience is. If you have seen another Doctor before, you can mention it and what that doctor said as your diagnosis. That will be okay

3. Don’t complain about the lower lines on the test chart that you can’t see when the test is not over.

Some people expect to see perfectly when the doctor puts the first lens in front of their eye. Life doesn’t work like that.

The eye test moves in steps. Just read out the line you are asked to read out. As the test progresses your doctor will keep changing the lenses till the one that is best for you is reached.

Be patient.

4. Don’t conclude to your Eye Doctor what treatment you want when you have not heard his/her option on what will be good for you.

Doing this can have you miss out on better treatment options.

When your Eye Doctor has told you their option for you, then you can make a choice of what you want or can afford.

Bonus: Don’t tell your Eye Doctor to remove some medications. Because a good Doctor prescribes medication according to the solution that will give you the best.

In some cases, taking only half of your treatment may make your condition worse.

Your conclusion should be after listening to all the options from your Eye Doctor.

Our Story & Purpose

As they say, the eye is the window of the body. Quality eye health leads to quality general health. Unfortunately, most of the blindness in the world is avoidable. According to the IAPD, avoidable blindness which is the blindness that could be prevented or treated makes up nearly 75% of the world’s blindness cases.

Inspired by her mother’s nursing profession, Dr. Immaculata Atumonye decided to be in a position where she will use her expertise to bring comfort to people.

Dr(Mrs) Immaculata, having acquired her Doctor of optometry (OD) degree from Abia state university in 2005 founded Immalik Eye Care in 2015.

Her goal has remained to grow a public-friendly eye clinic with the zeal to help people with any eye challenge while maintaining a high standard of professionalism.
