THANK YOU, ONE AND ALL

Two separate incidents inspired hosted by The Journalism Clinic on 22 October.

The first was a Facebook post, in July 2018. The other was a comment last June, at the 90th birthday event hosted for the publisher of The Vanguard, the much revered Sam Amuka-Pemu.

Founder of The Journalism Clinic, Taiwo Obe (TO) shared the back stories in his welcome remarks, and to a roomful of journalists, amongst them several of the senior media professionals being celebrated that day, who were 70 years and older.

"We are blessed to have here today a few publishers, managing directors and editors--some of whom will soon become elders," Obe said in his welcome remarks, which was essentially an appreciation ritual in itself.

It was an appreciation of all the sponsors, partners, institutions and individuals who bought into the vision of the programme and made it a reality on 22 October.

By coincidence, Appreciation Day also turned out to be a celebration of birthdays. So there was a cake cutting interlude.

Mr Ben Lawrence turned 89 on that day.

Mr Lade Bonuola (aka Ladbone) turned 79.

It was also the birthday of Mr Gbenga Adefaye, Provost of the Nigeria Institute of Journalism, venue of the programme, the previous day.

The list goes on.

"Thank you for being here," TO said in closing. "For a feast without feasters becomes a fast."

was a trip to the past, more or less. In addition to listening to honorees share a slice of their younger selves in the newsrooms of the 20th century, we also wanted them to see a selection of publications produced in that time.

So we worked with two archive-focused organisations to fetch and showcase what became an outdoor exhibition of not just products of the newsrooms but also equipment the senior journalists must have used to produce their reports (like a manual typewriter and bulky landline phone.

This exhibition was curated by our partners at Crimmd Lagos

The Lagos State government supported , and we're deeply grateful for that.

In his goodwill message, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho, extended warm greetings from His Excellency Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

He commended The Journalism Clinic for conceiving the idea and hosting the August gathering.

"Today’s celebration reminds us that journalism is not just a career. It is a lifelong calling. A calling that demands courage, integrity, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to truth and public service," he said.

Mr Omotosho's speech was delivered by Mr Oluwakayode Oyekanmi (pictured), Director of Strategy at the ministry.

Here's an excerpt πŸ‘‡πŸ½πŸ‘‡πŸ½

"While many of you our revered elders may have retired from active newsroom duties, your influence continues to resonate powerfully across the profession. The baton you passed on remains in the hands of younger practitioners. I am proud to say that I am one of the many protΓ©gΓ©s who have benefited from your mentorship and wisdom in the noble craft of journalism.

"Personally, I find the idea of an Appreciation Day for media elders profoundly symbolic, not only for those being honoured today but also for all of us and the younger generation of journalists.

"It is deeply heartwarming that while you are still with us, this professional community is recognising your immense contributions to building an informed and conscious society. This act of gratitude will go a long way in promoting the spirit of patriotism, humility, and continuity in our profession.

"As a journalist myself, I hold deep respect and admiration for those who paved the way for the rest of us. Many of you here taught us that journalism, at its very core, is a public trust, one that must always be guided by conscience, fairness, and accuracy. You inspired generations of reporters, editors, and broadcasters to approach their craft with both passion and patriotism."

We couldn't have asked for a more accommodating host for .

Mr Gbenga Adefaye, Provost of the Nigeria Institute of Journalism (NIJ) went the extra mile, and above and beyond the call of duty, to make us all feel welcomed.

The good thing is a good number of the senior media professionals honoured that day started their careers in journalism at this institute, founded in 1963.

We've had a most remarkable and memorable time at .

This event was an opportunity for us to honour (and celebrate) a generation of Nigeria's senior media professionals, aged 70 and above, for their service to journalism and, by extension, the society.

We say a special 'thank you' to LAGRIDE for delivering excellent service, and ensuring that the elders enjoyed a smooth transfer in Lagos, the host city. πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸ’•πŸ˜Š
