Recently on March 3, 2024, we celebrated world hearing day.

As we mark World Hearing Day, I find myself reflecting on a recent experience that exemplifies the power of digital media and personal engagement in advocacy.

In a recent video shoot dedicated to World Hearing Day, I had the privilege of collaborating with a talented team at work Evercare Hospital Lekki
and a videographer. Positioned in front of the camera, I felt a deep sense of purpose as we worked together to amplify the message of hearing health awareness.

Here are five key highlights from this meaningful experience:

1. Engagement with Technology: Harnessing the reach of digital media platforms, we utilized video content to spark conversations and raise awareness about hearing health on a global scale.

2. Collaboration: Our partnership underscored the importance of teamwork and shared dedication in driving impactful advocacy initiatives. Together, we merged creativity and expertise to deliver a compelling message.

3. Personal Connection: By sharing my own involvement in the campaign, I aimed to foster a personal connection with our audience, emphasizing the significance of individual commitment to the cause.

4. Visibility and Representation: Through visibility and representation, we sought to empower individuals with hearing-related concerns, advocating for inclusivity, support and understanding.

5. Advocacy and Education: Our efforts aligned with the mission of World Health Organization on World Hearing Day, promoting education and advocacy surrounding hearing health, and inspiring positive change in our communities.

As we navigate the digital landscape, let us continue to leverage our platforms for meaningful impact. Together, we can raise awareness, drive advocacy, and make a difference in the lives of others.

Together, we can create a world where every voice is heard.

Treating Hearing Loss: Who you should see and what steps you should take.

So, you have hearing loss. What next?

If you think you or someone you know has hearing loss, you are probably wondering what the next step should be.

That’s easy- see a hearing healthcare professional.

It is important to see someone who specializes in hearing issues, such as an audiologist, an ENT doctor, or a hearing aids specialist.

Schedule a comprehensive evaluation to begin treatment and rehabilitation as soon as possible.

Don’t do it alone

While hearing loss typically can’t be reversed, most cases can be managed with the help of hearing healthcare professionals and hearing aids.

See a professional

Just as every person is unique, every hearing loss and hearing need is unique, too.

To ensure you get a solution that’s custom-fit to your precise needs and lifestyle, it is always recommended that you consult with a hearing healthcare professional.

These trained experts have the experience and technology needed to precisely diagnose and measure your degree of hearing loss, then prescribe and administer a solution personalized for you- including providing ongoing support and care.

FAQ

“I can hear but I found it difficult to understand, why?”

Often times, a common concern among individuals with hearing loss is their ability to hear people talk but not understand what they are saying.

This is a consistent complaint of individuals who are experiencing the effects of a “sloping high frequency hearing loss".

Our brain is the center where sound waves are interpreted and processed into meaningful words.

We hear with ours ears, but make meanings out of it in our brain.

If the ears are affected, it also affects the brain.

We miss out on information due to hearing loss

Key consonants are missed resulting in difficulty to understand.

Imagine reading a book with some vowels or consonant erased

Understanding becomes difficult.

If this is your experience, hesitate no more and see your doctor.

Silent Killer

I had a conversation about hearing loss with a colleague few months back

She believed she do not need her hearing tested

She claimed she can hear perfectly well

Maybe she can even hear the future

It is a good thing she believed she can hear,

However, it will also benefit her to have her hearing tested at least once a year.

Many people feels this way too.

Unlike our eyes, hearing loss is gradual and painless

You won’t notice it until it becomes significant and irreversible.

So you need to monitor your hearing.

This will help you to notice any abnormal pattern.

And if you have hearing loss but still haven’t done anything to treat it,

What is holding you back?

If it’s because you don’t think hearing loss is that a big deal,

Then maybe you just haven’t seen the research linking hearing loss

To increased risk of falls, social isolation, dementia, higher medical costs and more.

No short cut about it, if you don’t take care of your hearing now

It will degenerates further and cost you more in the future.

Take action now, get tested.

Do you want to have your hearing tested?

One of my secondary school teachers will often say…

“if you don’t know you don’t know”

And there are things you don’t know you don’t know.

There are several things we are aware we don’t know

And there are things we aren’t aware we don’t know

One of such is about hearing loss.

Hearing loss at birth often go undetected, this significantly affect children speech and language development later in the future.

After birth, newborns should undergo a screening hearing test in the first few weeks to rule out any possible congenital hearing loss.

Your child may have a problem with their hearing if they:
• Are not startled by loud noise
• Seems to hear some sounds and not others
• Notice you only when they see you, but not when you call their name.
• Do not turn towards vices by 4 months of age
• Have not started to say any recognizable words by around 15 months.

If you think your baby might be having difficulty hearing, you need to speak to a doctor/hearing care provider.

You can also speak to me, my DM is open and I am always ready to help.
