"I Saw My Life Flash Before Me"—Celeste Ntuli

South African comedian and actress Celeste Ntuli was on her way to a comedy event when her car suddenly lost control on the highway. In an instant, what began as a laughter-filled journey turned into a terrifying blur of screeching tires and shattered glass.

“I saw my life flash before me,” she later recalled. “It made me realize how fragile life really is.”

Miraculously, Celeste escaped with only minor injuries. Her quick thinking — braking steadily and avoiding oversteering — helped her regain control just before impact.

Today, she looks back on that moment as a powerful reminder to always rest before driving, wear a seatbelt, and never take road safety for granted. “We joke for a living, but safety is no joke,” Celeste says.

🔥 Caught Off Guard: The Fire I Never Saw Coming

By Job Gusero Amutabi – Story

After decades in the safety field — preaching, practicing, and auditing safety — I thought I’d seen it all. Fire safety was my specialty; I never imagined I’d one day face it unprepared.

It happened in August 2025, during my annual leave. I’d travelled to the village with my son and daughter to oversee some house construction. To cut costs, I hosted my four fundis (construction workers) in my two-bedroom house. We used a rarely touched 3kg gas cylinder for cooking since it often rained in the evenings.

That evening, rain poured early. My son offered to make tea for the fundis while I went to shower. Moments later, a loud pop! pierced the air, followed by terrified screams. I rushed out — and froze. The kitchen glowed like daylight; a fierce blue flame was shooting from the gas cylinder toward the ceiling.

No fire extinguisher. No car nearby. No time.

I grabbed a pole from the construction site, knocked the pot of boiling tea aside, and pushed the flaming cylinder outside. Rain hit it, and the fire grew worse. When one of the fundis threw water, it exploded higher — that’s when instinct kicked in. I yelled for everyone to grab shovels, and together, we buried the cylinder in wet soil until the flames died out.

When we finally uncovered it the next morning, we found the nozzle had snapped off. A few more seconds, and the cylinder could have exploded.

That night, I realized something profound — safety is never absolute, not even for the experts. You can teach it, enforce it, live it — but complacency is the real danger.

I shared this experience on August 25, 2025, not as a story of fear, but as a reminder that safety requires constant vigilance — every day, everywhere.

"The Day I Learned Safety the Hard Way".

It’s been about six years now, but the memory is still fresh as if it happened yesterday.

That morning started like any other. I had my earpods plugged in, music playing loud enough to drown out the early morning preachers and random chatter that fill Lagos buses. It was my daily routine, my own way of finding calm amid the chaos.

When I got to Ikeja Along, the usual scene unfolded: traders spreading wares across the rail tracks, food vendors calling out to customers, and people hustling to cross before the next train came. The pedestrian bridge we now use hadn’t been built yet.

As I made my way through the crowd, everyone suddenly began shouting and pushing. I couldn’t hear a thing, my music had built a wall around me. In seconds, I lost balance and stumbled dangerously close to the rail.

And then a strong hand pulled me back.
Before I could blink, a train thundered past, grazing the edge of where I stood seconds earlier. 🚆

My knees buckled. My heart pounded like a drum in my chest. In the shock that followed, a few angry bystanders scolded me — one even seized my earpods, yelling, “You wan kill yourself?!”

That moment changed everything for me. I realized how quickly "complacency can turn familiarity into danger".

Since that day, every time I approach a railway track - even behind the wheel - I pause, observe, and stay fully aware.

💡 Lessons Learned

* Never take safety for granted - distractions can be deadly.

* Complacency is the silent trigger behind many avoidable incidents.

* Awareness is not optional; it’s your first line of defense.

* Sometimes, the difference between tragedy and survival is a stranger’s hand i.e taking action to safe others.

That experience taught me that "safety doesn’t start at work — it starts with mindset."

Because in the end, no matter your title, role, or destination - your first responsibility is to "return home safely."
