This is an example of the diligence of a transplant patient preparing for regularly taking medication for 3 weeks during a trip. It is absolutely important to take medications on time with no exceptions or excuses. Doesn’t matter if you are at home, at work or on a trip. Rejection respects no person. Take your medication wherever you go. Just like you would take some money or car keys or your purse or wallet, take your medication with you. Set up an alarm that reminds you it is time to take your medicine. You can set up an alarm on your phone or your watch. Take this requirement seriously because even though transplant greatly improves life, you can end up back on dialysis or die if you do not take good care of the transplant which includes taking medication on time, doing regular tests to see early signs of a problem and seeing your doctor to check on the health of the transplant. That’s how you get to live with a transplant for many years.

Do you know your kidney function numbers? This is usually the simple report of urine and blood tests that tell a doctor and the patient if the is any kidney damage. Protein in the urine or a decrease in filtering of blood tell us if the kidneys are working well or not. If you are over the age of 40, have a family member with kidney disease, have high blood pressure or have a past history of kidney troubles, check your kidney numbers at least once a year. At KidneySolutions, we could help with this to help detect kidney disease early and prevent progression to kidney failure that could either kill or require treatments with dialysis or transplant which are very expensive and stressful
