COMMON TYPES OF HORMONAL IMBALANCE IN WOMEN
Hormonal imbalance happens when your body makes too much or too little of certain hormones. This can affect your periods, fertility, mood, weight, skin, and overall health.
Let’s look at some of the most common types many women face 👇
1. Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS)
This is when the ovaries produce too much androgen (male hormone) which affects ovulation and causes:
-Irregular or absent periods
- Acne, weight gain, excessive hair growth
- Difficulty conceiving
2. High Prolactin (Hyperprolactinemia)
Prolactin helps your body make breast milk after childbirth.
When it’s too high at the wrong time, meaning when you're not pregnant or breastfeeding, it can:
-Stop ovulation
- Cause irregular or absent periods
- Lead to milky breast discharge (when not breastfeeding)
3. Low Progesterone
Progesterone is the hormone that prepares the womb for pregnancy and balances estrogen.
Low levels can lead to:
-Spotting before period
- Short cycles
- Trouble conceiving or early miscarriage
4. Estrogen Dominance
Estrogen builds the womb lining and supports the cycle, but needs balance with progesterone.
When it’s too high, it leads to;
- Heavy periods
- Bloating, mood swings
- Fibroids, breast tenderness etc.
5. Thyroid Imbalance (Low or High Thyroid Hormone)
Thyroid hormones control your metabolism and affect periods.
Low thyroid (hypothyroidism) causes tiredness, weight gain, cold feeling, slow or absent periods.
High thyroid (hyperthyroidism) is associated with fast heartbeat, weight loss, anxiety, light or absent periods.
6. Perimenopause / Menopause Changes
This is when estrogen and progesterone naturally drop as women age.
It can cause:
-Irregular periods
- Hot flashes, night sweats
- Mood change
