Robotic Surgery for Prostate Cancer at Kelina Hospital

Prostate cancer remains one of the leading cancers affecting men globally. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), about one in 8 men will be diagnosed during their lifetime, and while not all cases are fatal, early detection remains key to survival. One of the most advanced treatment options for localized prostate cancer is robotic surgery, a breakthrough that blends surgical mastery with cutting-edge technology.

How Robotic Surgery Works

Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that allows surgeons to operate using a specialized robotic system. The robot does not act on its own; it is fully controlled by a trained robotic surgeon seated at a console with a magnified view of the surgical area. The system mirrors every hand movement with remarkable precision, enabling delicate handling of nerves and tissues around the prostate.

Kelina’s Robot

Kelina Hospital is equipped with advanced technology for Robotic Radical Prostatectomy (RRP) or Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP), expanding treatment options for men with prostate cancer. A key feature of our system is its telesurgery capability, which allows foreign robotic surgeons to collaborate with our surgeons in Nigeria through a secure, high-sp*ed network.

Better Precision, Faster Recovery

The first patient we did Robotic Radical Prostatectomy for in Kelina Hospital returned for review 2 weeks after surgery and reported his er****on is perfectly fine. With robotic assistance, our team removes cancerous tissue while preserving vital structures that affect quality of life. Patients benefit from smaller incisions, less bleeding, minimal pain, and faster recovery. The Lead Surgeon in Robotic Surgery at Kelina has done over 2,000 robotic procedures successfully.

Is Robotic Surgery Safe?

Many patients ask whether robotic surgery is safe or if the robot replaces the surgeon. The answer is simple: the surgeon is always in control. The robot is an advanced tool that enhances precision; it never replaces human expertise. It is like an engineer using a forklift to lift a container that would be impossible for 20 men to move manually.

World-Class Care at Home

With robotic surgery available at Kelina Hospital, patients no longer need to travel abroad for prostate cancer care.

Who Is Eligible?

All patients suitable for laparoscopic surgery are also eligible for robotic surgery. It is especially useful for localized or locally advanced prostate cancers. Patients with metastatic prostate cancer are not eligible since removing the prostate does not cure cancer that has spread beyond it.

Dental Implants: Benefits and What to Expect

Missing teeth can affect more than just your smile. They can impact your confidence, sp*ech, chewing ability, and even your overall oral health. Dental implants are one of the most reliable and long-lasting solutions for replacing missing teeth, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits.

Benefits of Dental Implants

• Natural Look and Feel: Dental implants mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth, blending seamlessly with your smile.

• Improved Chewing and Sp*ech: Unlike removable dentures, implants are fixed in place, making it easier to eat and speak naturally.

•Durability: With proper care, dental implants can last decades, making them a cost-effective long-term solution.

• Bone Preservation: Implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss and maintaining facial structure.

• Comfort: Since they are securely anchored, there’s no slipping or irritation like with dentures.

What to Expect
The implant process involves a minor surgical procedure where a titanium post is placed into the jawbone to serve as a tooth root. After a healing period for bone integration, a custom crown is attached, completing the restoration.

5 Gynaecological Conditions Best Diagnosed Through Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy, also known as keyhole surgery, is one of the most advanced diagnostic tools in modern gynaecology. It allows doctors to view the pelvic organs directly using a small camera inserted through tiny incisions, making it invaluable for detecting conditions that may be missed on ultrasound or MRI.

1. Endometriosis
Laparoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing, staging endometriosis, and treatment. It helps identify even small implants that are invisible on scans, ensuring accurate treatment planning.

2. Pelvic Adhesions
Scar tissue between pelvic organs, often caused by infections, previous surgeries, or endometriosis, can distort anatomy and cause pain or infertility. Laparoscopy is the only way to confirm their presence, severity, and treatment.

3. Tubal Blockage or Damage
Through laparoscopy and dye testing (chromopertubation), gynaecologists can assess whether fallopian tubes are open, healthy, or damaged, which is vital in fertility assessments.

4. Chronic Pelvic Pain of Unknown Cause
When imaging tests are inconclusive, laparoscopy can reveal hidden problems such as endometriosis, adhesions, or ovarian abnormalities that might be causing persistent pain.

5. Unexplained Infertility
In women whose scans and hormone tests appear normal, laparoscopy can uncover subtle conditions like mild endometriosis, early adhesions, or tubal problems that affect fertility

Why Choose Laparoscopy?
This minimally invasive technique offers precision diagnosis, faster recovery, and minimal scarring, making it a preferred option in modern gynaecological care.

If you are experiencing pelvic pain, difficulty conceiving, or other persistent gynaecological symptoms, early diagnosis is key. Book a consultation with our Gynaecologists today via: https://www.kelinahospital.com/request-appointment/

Nasal Polyps: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Sometimes, a blocked nose is more than just a common cold or seasonal allergy. For some people, the cause is nasal polyps- small, soft growths in the nasal passages or sinuses that can affect breathing and sense of smell.

Nasal polyps are noncancerous and often linked to long-term inflammation from conditions such as asthma, chronic sinusitis, or allergic rhinitis. While smaller polyps may not cause noticeable symptoms, larger ones can obstruct airflow and lead to ongoing discomfort.

Common Symptoms of Nasal Polyps

• Constant nasal congestion or blockage
• Runny nose and postnasal drip
• Loss or reduction of smell (anosmia)
• Frequent sinus infections
• Facial pain or pressure
• Snoring or mouth breathing

Causes and Risk Factors
They are more common in people with:

• Chronic rhinosinusitis
• Asthma
• Allergic fungal sinusitis
• Aspirin sensitivity

Diagnosis and Treatment

An ENT specialist can diagnose nasal polyps using nasal endoscopy or imaging tests. Treatment may include:

• Nasal corticosteroid sprays to reduce inflammation and shrink polyps

• Oral or injectable corticosteroids for severe cases

• Endoscopic sinus surgery to remove larger or persistent polyps

Untreated nasal polyps can cause recurrent sinus infections and ongoing breathing difficulties. If you have persistent nasal blockage, reduced sense of smell, or sinus problems that do not improve with medication, consider seeing an ENT doctor. Hydrocoele of the canal of nuck mimicking an inguinal hernia in a 34-year-old pregnant woman: a case report

In adult females, hydrocele of the canal of Nuck is a very rare condition that results from failure of obliteration of the distal portion of the canal, which forms a fluid-containing sac. While preoperative diagnosis of this type of hydrocele is important, the diagnosis of hydrocele of the canal of nuck is seldom made based on clinical findings alone and should be considered when diagnosing inguinal swellings in female patients. Hydrocele of the canal of nuck is a rare entity, with literature estimating the incidence at 1% in young girls.

"That Opportunity Saved my Life..." - Dennis Olise

My turning point came when I made the decision to attend a free screening session organised by Kelina Hospital, Lagos. I had noticed symptoms like back pain and slow urine flow. I could take 2–3 minutes to p*e, and in the next 10 minutes, I would feel the urge to urinate again. I had a feeling there was a blockage in my system but wasn’t sure what it was. I can’t say whether it was divine direction or survival instinct that led me to attend that screening. That opportunity saved my life, and I give all glory to Almighty God. The PSA test and some other awkward tests were done. For men, these tests are often avoided out of fear or fatalism. Yet, Biden’s survival story—like mine—hinges on one word: early.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to detect early. It begins in the ovaries and often presents with subtle symptoms such as:

- Persistent bloating
- Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
- Feeling full quickly
- Frequent or urgent urination.

Because these symptoms are often mistaken for less serious conditions, many women are diagnosed at a later stage when treatment becomes more challenging.

This year's theme, "No Woman Left Behind", call for a greater awareness, timely diagnosis, and access to expert care for all women, regardless of age or background.

At Kelina Hospital, we are committed to this cause by providing advanced diagnostic tools and professional gynaecological care to support early detection and treatment of ovarian cancer.

Don't ignore persistent symptoms.
