Hydrocoele of the canal of nuck mimicking an inguinal hernia in a 34-year-old pregnant woman: a case report

In adult females, hydrocele of the canal of Nuck is a very rare condition that results from failure of obliteration of the distal portion of the canal, which forms a fluid-containing sac. While preoperative diagnosis of this type of hydrocele is important, the diagnosis of hydrocele of the canal of nuck is seldom made based on clinical findings alone and should be considered when diagnosing inguinal swellings in female patients. Hydrocele of the canal of nuck is a rare entity, with literature estimating the incidence at 1% in young girls.

"That Opportunity Saved my Life..." - Dennis Olise

My turning point came when I made the decision to attend a free screening session organised by Kelina Hospital, Lagos. I had noticed symptoms like back pain and slow urine flow. I could take 2–3 minutes to p*e, and in the next 10 minutes, I would feel the urge to urinate again. I had a feeling there was a blockage in my system but wasn’t sure what it was. I can’t say whether it was divine direction or survival instinct that led me to attend that screening. That opportunity saved my life, and I give all glory to Almighty God. The PSA test and some other awkward tests were done. For men, these tests are often avoided out of fear or fatalism. Yet, Biden’s survival story—like mine—hinges on one word: early.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to detect early. It begins in the ovaries and often presents with subtle symptoms such as:

- Persistent bloating
- Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
- Feeling full quickly
- Frequent or urgent urination.

Because these symptoms are often mistaken for less serious conditions, many women are diagnosed at a later stage when treatment becomes more challenging.

This year's theme, "No Woman Left Behind", call for a greater awareness, timely diagnosis, and access to expert care for all women, regardless of age or background.

At Kelina Hospital, we are committed to this cause by providing advanced diagnostic tools and professional gynaecological care to support early detection and treatment of ovarian cancer.

Don't ignore persistent symptoms.

Exuberant Urethral Malignancy causing unrelenting Bladder Outlet Obstruction, misdiagnosed as Malignant Prostatic Obstruction: Case Report

Prostate cancer presenting as a pan-urethral tumor is a rare condition, and this case report is to remind the medical community on the need for meticulous evaluation of the urethra during prostate surgery, even on patients who are on catheter. This case report highlights the fact that in advanced cases of prostate cancer, the tumor can extend into the (entire) urethra, independently causing obstruction to urine flow. The ability of clinicians to recognize and appropriately address the spread of prostate cancer to the urethra is essential for optimal patient outcomes.

KELINA HOSPITAL CELEBRATES LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENTS IN PROSTATE SURGERY

Press Statement
We are here today to celebrate some remarkable achievements by Kelina Hospital since we opened. We are dedicated to excellence, innovation, and patient-centred care. This has driven us to continuously push boundaries and set new standards in surgical practice.

1. Total number of surgeries done to date
April 2025 is a milestone in the life of Kelina Hospital as we mark Six Thousand (6,000) surgical operations since its inception.

2. Centre for Prostate Surgery
At the moment, Kelina Hospital does over 100 prostate surgeries per year, if both benign and cancerous prostate surgeries are added together.

3. Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)
This is the most common surgery done in Kelina Hospital. April 2025: a milestone as Kelina Hospital marks 500 Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) surgeries in 6 years. Kelina was the first hospital to do HoLEP in Nigeria. This started at the end of 2018. HoLEP is done for enlarged prostate obstructing urine flow. If obstruction is significant and is not relieved, it could damage the kidney, amongst other damages it could cause, some of them life-threatening. HoLEP is superior to TURP or Open Prostate surgery as patients lose less blood, spend less time on catheters, spend less time on hospital admission, recover faster, and return to work earlier. The American Urological Association and the European Association of Urology both recommend HoLEP as the best for prostates that are more than 80 to 100g in size. Patients who cannot pass urine and are catheterized are advised never to carry their catheters for several weeks before prostate surgery, as this causes a lot of complications, including infection.

4. Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (keyhole surgery) for prostate cancer.

5. Robotic Surgery for prostate cancer

How to Manage & Treat Endometriosis

What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis happens when tissue and glands similar to the innermost lining of the womb (endometrium) grows outside the womb, causing severe pain, heavy periods, and sometimes, fertility problems. While there is no permanent cure, the right treatments can help you live pain-free:

1. Pain Relief
Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help with cramps and discomfort. For stronger pain, doctors may prescribe medication. Pain management is often combined with other treatments for better results.

2. Hormonal Therapy
Hormones help slow the growth of endometriosis and reduce pain. Options include: Birth control pills to regulate periods, Hormonal IUDs to reduce pain and bleeding and other hormone treatments to shrink endometriosis tissue. These treatments are not permanent solutions, but help manage symptoms effectively.

3. Laparoscopic Surgery
For severe cases, surgery can remove endometriosis tissue and relieve pain. Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive option that can help relieve pain, improve fertility and prevent further complications. At Kelina Hospital, we utilize advanced endoscopic and laser equipment for precision treatment.

4. Lifestyle Adjustments & Alternative Therapies
While medical treatments are key, lifestyle modifications can significantly improve symptoms. Helpful strategies include: an anti-inflammatory diet (rich in omega-3s, leafy greens, and whole grains), regular exercise to reduce pelvic pain and inflammation, pelvic floor physical therapy for muscle relaxation, acupuncture and stress management techniques.

When to Seek Expert Care
If symptoms persist despite medication, or if you're struggling with infertility, consult a specialist to find the best treatment for you. Early treatment can help prevent complications and improve quality of life. Book a consultation with our Gynaecologist today via: https://www.kelinahospital.com/request-appointment
