*The DOS AND DON'TS OF IMMUNISATION/VACCINATION FOR BABIES!!*
Vaccination is getting a vaccine — having the injection or taking an oral vaccine dose.
You can ask as many questions as you want, and you then decide if you want the vaccination to go ahead.
*DOS*
1. Dress your less than 12 months old baby in clothes that are easy to remove. Most of the injections are given on the thigh.
2. Dress toddlers and older children in loose or short sleeves – they'll have their injections in the upper arm.
3. Wear an appropriate clothing that allows skin-to-skin contact that can be very reassuring for your baby.
4. If you are breastfeeding, you can feed your baby while the nurse is giving the vaccine.
5. If your baby is bottle fed, you could give them a dummy, along with a cuddle to help calm both you and your baby.
6. *Gently* stroke *near* the injection site for approximately 10 seconds to provide comfort and distract from any sensations of pain.
*DON'TS*
1. Over dressing them can trap the body's heat and make the temperature go higher
2. Do not press, rub or massage the injection site
3. Do not over dress your baby to prevent trapping the body's heat and make the temperature go higher
4. Do not offer pain relief before immunisation.
*Note* :
Your baby can still have their vaccinations if:
a. they have a minor illness without a high temperature – such as a cold
b. they have allergies, asthma, eczema or food intolerances
c. they were born prematurely.
*Always remember this* 👇
*If there is pain at the injection site or a rash.*
These reactions, also called side effects, are normal and will soon go away.
👉Use a cool, damp cloth to help reduce redness, soreness, and/or swelling at the injection *site (Not ice cold water* ).
👉Reduce fever with a cool sponge bath.
👉Breastfeed or bottle feed if mix feeding.
👉You can mop the body with lukewarm water.
👉Carry, cuddle, sing for your baby if restless.
👉👉Amongst all the recommended vaccines, DPT (Diptheria, Pertussis and Tetanus(3in1) is considered most painful as it results into severe pain, fever, vomiting, swelling or redness or inflammation at the site of injection.
👉👉You can ask as many questions as you want, and you then decide if you want the vaccination to go ahead.
👉👉Always make sure the next immunisation appointment is written clearly on the card.
Kindly post your baby's clear picture of your baby's immunisation schedule.
