What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic medical condition where the body can’t properly regulate blood sugar (glucose). This happens either because the body doesn't produce enough insulin or can't use it effectively. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter your cells to be used for energy.
Types of Diabetes:
1. Type 1 Diabetes
- The body doesn’t produce insulin at all.
- It’s usually diagnosed in children or young adults.
- It’s autoimmune (the body attacks its own insulin-producing cells).
- Requires daily insulin for life.
2. Type 2 Diabetes
- The body produces insulin but doesn’t use it properly (insulin resistance).
- It’s the most common type.
- Linked to lifestyle: poor diet, obesity, lack of exercise.
- Can be managed with lifestyle changes, oral meds, or insulin.
3. Gestational Diabetes
- Occurs during pregnancy.
- Usually goes away after childbirth but increases the risk of type 2 later.
- Needs monitoring to protect both mother and baby.
Note: Diabetes is more common than you think and often, it starts silently. It happens when the body can’t properly manage blood sugar.
Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, is often linked to lifestyle: poor diet, lack of exercise, and obesity. But here’s the thing, it's preventable and manageable.
1. Watch out for signs like frequent urination, constant thirst, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. Regular blood sugar checks can save lives.
2. Eat balanced meals, stay active, and avoid excessive sugar. Diabetes doesn’t have to control your life if you take control first and many more.
