ACCENT IS A SOCIAL INFORMATION

Why does an accent matter (even when we say it doesn't)
We tell ourselves accent is irrelevant.

Yet within moments of hearing someone speak, we've already formed impressions about them.

This contradiction is worth examining.

Whether we acknowledge it or not, accent communicates beyond words.

It suggests confidence, educational background, professional authority, and cross-cultural fluency.

These perceptions shape opportunities, from job interviews to international collaborations.

For many of our students, choosing to train in Received Pronunciation or modern British English isn't about claiming superiority.

It's about accessing a widely recognized, professionally neutral register that travels well across borders and contexts.

Think of it as choosing the right tool for your goals. A pianist doesn't learn scales because they're "better" than improvisation they learn them because they open doors to more repertoire, more stages, more possibilities.

Your natural accent carries your history and identity. Training in RP or Standard British English adds another instrument to your communication repertoire.

You're not replacing one with the other; you're expanding your range.

The question isn't whether accent matters it demonstrably does in many professional and international settings.
