Folic acid, a synthetic form of folate (vitamin B9), is a critical nutrient for women who are trying to conceive or are already pregnant. While doctors may recommend various supplements during pregnancy, folic acid stands out due to its essential role in fetal development and maternal health. Here’s why it should be a top priority.
1. Prevents Neural Tube Defects
Folic acid is vital for the proper development of the neural tube, which forms the baby’s brain and spinal cord. Adequate intake before and during early pregnancy significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida and anencephaly. These serious birth defects occur in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman knows she’s pregnant.
