Good morning and Happy Monday.

I’m an eye care professional passionate about protecting vision in our digital age and the prevention of avoidable blindness.

With the increasing use of screens, phones, computers, tablets and TVs, many adults are experiencing eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes and fatigue. Left unaddressed, prolonged screen use can contribute to myopia progression and other avoidable eye problems.

Globally, we are facing a growing myopia (short-sightedness) epidemic, with studies projecting that half of the world’s population may be myopic by 2050. Increased screen use, reduced outdoor time, and poor visual habits are major contributors. Left unchecked, this can also lead to avoidable vision problems later in life.
In response, I developed a simple resource titled:
“How to Protect Your Eyes from Screens: A 7-Day Vision Protection Plan.”
I’m happy to share a few practical tips or provide more details to you if you are interested. Please feel free to send me a DM.

*Eye Health and Nutrition: Eating for Eye Health - Foods that Support Vision*

A healthy diet rich in essential nutrients can play a significant role in maintaining good eye health and reducing the risk of eye diseases. The foods we eat provide the building blocks for healthy eyes, and making informed choices can help support vision and reduce the risk of age-related eye problems.

*Key Nutrients for Eye Health:*

- *Lutein and Zeaxanthin*: These antioxidants are found in high concentrations in the macula, the part of the eye responsible for central vision. They help protect the eyes against blue light and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin include:
- Leafy greens like spinach and kale
- Broccoli
- Corn
- Eggs
- *Omega-3 Fatty Acids*: These healthy fats support eye health by reducing inflammation and promoting healthy blood flow to the eyes. Foods rich in omega-3s include:
- Fatty fish like salmon and sardines
- Flaxseeds
- Chia seeds
- *Vitamin A*: This vitamin is essential for the health of the cornea and retina. Foods rich in vitamin A include:
- Sweet potatoes
- Carrots
- Dark leafy greens like spinach and kale
- Fortified dairy products
- *Vitamin C*: This antioxidant helps maintain healthy blood vessels in the eyes and reduces the risk of cataracts. Foods rich in vitamin C include:
- Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits
- Bell peppers
- Tomatoes
- Strawberries

*Incorporate these Foods into Your Diet:*

- *Spinach*: Add fresh spinach to salads, smoothies, or sauté it with garlic as a side dish.
- *Kale*: Use kale as a base for salads, or add it to soups and stews.
- *Salmon*: Grill or bake salmon for a healthy dinner option.
- *Sweet Potatoes*: Roast sweet potatoes in the oven with herbs and spices for a delicious side dish.
- *Carrots*: Snack on raw carrots with hummus or add them to soups.

Tips for Reducing Eye Strain from Screens

Are you spending too much time staring at screens? 👀 Whether it's for work or leisure, prolonged screen time can cause eye strain and discomfort. Here are some tips to help you reduce eye strain:

1️⃣ Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

2️⃣ Adjust your screen settings: Adjust the brightness and contrast of your screen to a comfortable level.

3️⃣ Take breaks: Take regular breaks from screens to rest your eyes.

4️⃣ Use blue light filters: Use blue light filters or apps that filter out blue light from screens.

5️⃣ Get regular eye exams: Regular eye exams can help detect eye problems early.

Take care of your eyes! 💡
