DEPRESSION
Over the past few days, reports on su***de within and outside Nigeria have increased rapidly, with depression and related mental illnesses being mentioned as a major cause. Although not all su***de cases are caused by depression, it’s important to share some tips that can help you kick the blues whenever they come calling.
1. Focus on what you’re doing right.
Positive thinking might sound cliché but it’s been proven to uplift people who feel down. This is because depression can cloud judgment, making it easy to overemphasize negatives while discounting the positives.
2. Structure your day.
A lack of consistent routines can increase feelings of helplessness and a loss of control over the direction of your life. Having a daily plan can help you regain that sense of control and decrease the feeling that you’re just a passive participant in life.
3. Find your happy people and places
Humans are wired to connect: Call a friend or family member and hang out, go for a walk, or meet up at a park. Even small steps like volunteering and smiling at strangers make a difference. Opening up a little doesn’t hurt.
4. Exercise regularly.
You will be surprised at the positive effect a short, 20 minutes jog can give. Research shows that exercise releases endorphins; hormones that help you feel good about yourself.
5. Get enough sleep.
Sleep is an important restorative activity so deprivation can cause irritability and tension which can, in turn, play a role in depression. Speak to your doctor if you have trouble sleeping.
Depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses can be managed proactively before they become worse. Never let them win.
