FACTS ABOUT PLASTICS:

‎About 16,000 chemicals are associated with plastic, from synthesis to manufacturing the final product.

‎Some of these chemicals are useful and safe. Some are toxic to environment and human health.

‎Potential risk includes Carcinogenic, developmental and endocrine impact.

‎Exposure to certain plastic chemicals, like BPA, increase the risk of cancer, particularly breast Cancer.

‎Inhaling plastic particles can damage the lungs and can cause Asthma.

‎Pregnancy and nursing products such as baby bottles, pacifiers, and plastic feeding utensils poses infants and children at high risk of exposure.

‎Some plastic chemicals can cause neurological and immune system issues.

‎HOW PLASTIC POLLUTION CAUSES THESE EFFECTS:

‎Chemical leaching:
‎Harmful chemicals, like BPA and phthalates, can leach from plastics into food, water, and the environment, leading to exposure through various routes.

‎Microplastic ingestion:
‎Microplastics can be ingested through contaminated food and water, potentially causing damage to the digestive system and other organs. E.g food packaging.

‎Inhalation:
‎Inhaling plastic particles, especially in workplaces involved in plastic production or recycling, can cause respiratory problems and other health issues. E.g Asthma, lungs disease or damage.

‎Disruption of hormone function:
‎Certain plastic chemicals can disrupt the endocrine system, leading to hormone imbalances and related health problems.

‎Vector for pathogens:
‎Plastic waste can create habitats for disease vectors, like mosquitoes, increasing the risk of infectious diseases.

‎NOTE: Storage of water in plastic bottles to refrigerate is a wrong practice. Refrigerate sachet water or storage flasks.

At the Free medical outreach today at Lokoto Community, while attending to these guys, a mother walked to me and said: "For the past three days my child has been sick and has not taken any medication". Woa! Despite the PHC facility in the community, there are still people who can't afford healthcare services.

Yes! We may have taken the little we had to the community, but that little has saved a child who couldn't afford healthcare services for the past three days. The Rich help people, but a compassionate heart that make IMPACT brings healing to the Total Man (Spirit, Soul and Body).

Plastic pollution permeates every corner of the planet—even in our bodies in the form of microplastics.

Today, we took action to tackle plastic pollution by creating an Awareness to Scavengers on:
1. Impact of Plastic Pollution on health
2. Mitigation of Plastic Pollution and
3. Various ways of Plastic Recycling.

Plastic Pollution has effect on environment, Land, human, ocean/seabirds, etc. As the plastic degrades, the risk to human health increases. Chemicals leach from plastic packaging into food and environment. Hence, any contact with food or human poses a Risk. It can be a direct exposure to skin.

Harmful chemicals, like BPA and phthalates, can leach from plastics into food, water, and the environment, leading to exposure through various routes which affect human health.

Inhaling plastic particles, especially in workplaces involved in plastic production or recycling, can cause respiratory problems and other health issues. E.g Asthma, lungs disease or damage

Pregnancy and nursing products such as baby bottles, pacifiers, and plastic feeding utensils place infants and children at a high risk of exposure.

SOLUTIONS/PREVENTIONS:
* Reduce single-use plastics (Plastic utensils, plastic straws, plastic stir sticks): Use plastic that can be recycled.

* Use alternative materials such as Paper packagings, glasses, bottle flasks, disposable cups, paper bags, steel spoons or cutlery, steel utensils/Biodegradable materials.

So, one of the best way to create a film of a better future in the heart of the young ones is early exposure of the reality to them.

Seeing school children being enthusiastic about their future was the best moment for me.

HYPPADEC commemorate WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY by reaching out to school children, creating the reality of using plastic waste to harness the wind to generate electricity (Wind Turbine).

We understood women pass through pain, stigma, poverty and psychological stress during menstruation. And we took time to celebrate and identify with the young girls and women on World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025.

Beneficiaries were educated on menstrual hygiene and psychological stress during period, were given Reusable Pads for free and thought how to use it effectively for sustainability.

All thanks to YALI Network Nigeria, Niger State Hub.
