Niger State Government Strengthens Commitment to Citizen Well-Being Through Healthcare Initiatives.

The Niger State Government has reiterated its commitment to enhancing measures that promote citizen well-being across the state.

During a recent address to journalists, Deputy Governor and Taskforce Committee Chairman Comrade Yakubu Garba emphasized the current administration's dedication to supporting and improving health measures. He made this statement following the third quarter meeting of the Primary Healthcare and Immunization Taskforce Committee held in Minna.

Represented by Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Dangana, Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, the Deputy Governor highlighted critical health sector challenges discussed during the meeting, including immunization campaigns and the upcoming introduction of measles-rubella vaccines in October. The ministry is training frontline healthcare workers to enhance service delivery and execute Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) with organizations like GAVI and UNICEF.

Comrade Garba noted that the administration, led by Governor Umar Muhammed Bago, is actively collaborating with UNICEF, WHO, and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) to combat a recent cholera outbreak. The formation of the state Emergency Response Disaster Preparedness Committee comprising relevant ministries and civil society organizations has facilitated the establishment of Cholera Treatment Centers in all 25 local government areas, providing free treatment and successfully containing the outbreak.

Despite over 200 admissions across treatment centers, only 14 casualties were reported, an outcome attributed to heightened media awareness and the proactive engagement of healthcare workers.

He also commended First Lady Hajiya Fatima Umar Bago for fostering stakeholder discussions aimed at raising awareness about health challenges in the state. He echoed her call for mothers, caregivers, and community leaders to embrace the vaccination initiative targeting young women aged 14 and below to combat the measles-rubella virus.

Attendees at the meeting include the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Nasiru Muhammed, ALGON Chairman, Commissioner, for Secondary and Tertiary Health, Dr. Bello Tukur, Commissioner for women affairs and social development, Hajiya T**i Auta, the Permanent Secretary Ministry for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Muhammed Gana, other development partners among others.

Niger State Ministry of Primary Health Care Attends Capacity Building Workshop: A Call for Teamwork in Health Sector

The honorable commissioner Niger State Ministry Of primary Health care ably represented by the permanent secretary Dr Mohammed Gana, emphasized the importance of transitioning from analog to digital practices. He announced that participants would receive gadgets to assist in their work and encouraged them to take the workshop seriously to effectively relay the training to other staff members who could not attend.

Earlier on, The Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Secondary and Tertiary Health, Dr. Bello Tukur, has called on health personnel in Niger State to collaborate effectively to achieve significant improvements in the health sector. He made this appeal during the opening of a 4-day Capacity Building Workshop for Health Leaders and Managers at Dogon Koli Hotel in Minna.

Dr. Tukur emphasized that while Niger State is home to highly regarded health experts, it is crucial to translate commendations into tangible improvements in health indices. He stressed the importance of teamwork and unwavering commitment to meet the goals set for the sector.

The Commissioner highlighted the role of the State Planning Commission in enhancing accountability, mentioning that templates for reviewing the 2nd Quarter Work Plan have been distributed. He noted that regular monitoring of progress by the state government will build confidence in the health sector from both internal and external stakeholders.

"This training is not just a challenge; it is an opportunity to cultivate experts who will sustain progress in the health sector," Dr. Tukur stated.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Abdullahi Imam, called for an investigation into the gaps in achieving planned objectives at various levels of government. He reaffirmed that Niger State is committed to the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) to ensure that the resources align with the Annual Operation Plan (AOP) effectively.

Dr. Imam called for participants to thoroughly understand the Work Plan development process, asserting that without comprehension, the implementation will falter. He emphasized that the Ministry must ensure continuity in training and competent personnel development to maximize resource utility.

The Director of Health Planning Research and Statistics, Ministry of Secondary Healthcare, Pharm Iliya D. Laban, along with his counterpart from the Ministry of Primary Healthcare, Dr. Junaid Inuwa, outlined the workshop's goals, which include knowledge dissemination, developing the 2026 AOP, and familiarizing program officers with the 2023-2027 Health Sector Strategic Blueprint (HSSB).

This blueprint aligns with the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at improving healthcare outcomes for all Nigerians. The workshop emphasizes the state's commitment to enhancing health services and ensuring a collaborative approach among health professionals.

In discussions with the participants, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed highlighted that the training was timely, as they frequently encounter challenges when uploading their budgets. He noted that the training proceeded smoothly and was both practical and participatory.

Niger State First Lady Pledges Full Support for Upcoming Measles-Rubella Vaccine Advocacy Project

Niger State, Nigeria – In a significant show of commitment to public health, Her Excellency, Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago, the First Lady of Niger State, has pledged her unwavering support for the Measles-Rubella Vaccine Advocacy Project. This pledge was made during an advocacy visit from key stakeholders aiming to enhance vaccination coverage in the state.

The delegation, which included Honourable Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Mohammed Gana, engaged the First Lady regarding the planned October 2025 rollout of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign.

Dr. Aisha Ndaliman, the State Focal Person for the project, provided insight into the initiative’s objectives, focusing on curbing the spread of measles and rubella, especially among vulnerable children. Dr. Isa Yahaya Vatsa, the North Central Consultant, highlighted the First Lady's pivotal role and the expected contributions of the Wives of the 25 Local Government Chairmen in leading grassroots implementation efforts.

Dr. Vatsa underscored the severe risks posed by rubella, particularly to pregnant women, and stressed the importance of awareness regarding the symptoms of both diseases. He announced that the state-wide MR vaccination will commence in October, with the goal of achieving full coverage for all eligible children. The project is predominantly supported by GAVI, various partners, and the collaboration of Federal, State, NDSC, and Local Governments.

Honourable Iliyasu Zakari, Chairman of Agwara Local Government and ALGON Chairman, assured local government support for the project's funding and implementation, praising the First Lady's dedication to women's and children's health.

Reiterating her commitment, Her Excellency Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago expressed immense gratitude to the delegation for their advocacy efforts and pledged her total support for the project's success, commending all stakeholders involved in the mission to safeguarding the health of mothers and children across Niger State.

The Niger State Ministry of Primary Health Care in collaboration with ANRiN 1.0 has unveiled training of trainers on the Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) In-patient Care, the initiative spearheaded by the Niger State government, aimed at equipping healthcare workers with essential skills to effectively manage SAM cases.

According to statement by the Commissioner, Ministry of Primary Health Care, Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, explained that the training is timely, adding that it's align with the new Niger Agenda of farmer Muhammad Umaru Bago to enhance the capacity of healthcare professionals to combat the rising rates of acute malnutrition in the state.

Dr Dangana underscored the need for a concerted effort to improve life-saving services in nutrition stabilization centers.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Mohammed Gana had highlighted the collaborative approach being adopted across various sectors to address malnutrition challenges.

Dr Gana reiterated the unwavering commitment by the state government to ensuring that healthcare workers are well prepared to deliver high-quality care to affected children.

In her submission, the State Nutrition Officer, Dtn Asmau Mohammed Abubakar expressed her support for the programme, stating that the motive of the training is to enhanced the knowledge and skills of healthcare workers.

Asmau stressed that involving caregivers and providing a comprehensive nutrition counseling to them will significantly impact treatment outcomes.

The state Nutrition officer had earlier highlighted some of the objectives of the training which she said will Strengthen the capacity of healthcare workers to manage SAM cases with medical complications, Improve the quality of life saving services in nutrition stabilization centers, as well as Reduce mortality and morbidity resulting from mismanagement of SAM Key Components.

The lead facilitator, Dr Suleiman Abdullahi noted that the training modules is based on World Health Organization (WHO)guidelines, focusing on SAM Diagnosis and Treatment.

In-patient Care Management
Caregiver Support Methodology with Facilitator-led training with lectures, discussions, and hands-on practice target, he noted that the targeted Audience are Medical Doctors, Nurses, Nutritionists, pharmacists, and M&E officers and the expected outcomes is to enhanced knowledge and skills in managing SAM cases- Improved capacity to provide high-quality care, reduced morbidity and mortality rates associated with SAM.

According to a report by the NDHS 2023, the burden of acute malnutrition in Niger State has increased. This training aligns with national efforts to improve child survival and nutrition outcomes, reinforcing the state's commitment to combating malnutrition through multi sectoral approaches.

The report added that the initiative is crucial in tackling the public health challenge posed by SAM, with the ultimate aimed to improving treatment outcomes and reducing mortality rates among children under five years old.

On behalf of the Niger State Ministry of Primary Health car, I Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, Honorable Commissioner, Permanent Secretary, Management and the entire staff of the Ministry, wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency, Farmer Governor Umaru Bago for the remarkable achievements in transforming the primary health care system in Niger State.

Since his assumption of office, Governor Bago has demonstrated unwavering commitment to improving health care access for our citizens, particularly in urban and underserved rural areas.

Under his leadership, significant milestones have been reached, including, the construction and commissioning of 20 new Level 2 Primary Healthcare Centres across 16 Local Government Areas, thereby significantly enhancing health service availability; the groundbreaking initiative for 100 Level 2 PHCs. showcasing a dedication to ensuring quality health care for all within a short timeline;
upgrading of existing facilities to Level 2+ standards, and renovation of the facilities across the State; establishing Nigeria’s first Primary Healthcare Training Centre in the process and fostering workforce development through capacity building efforts.

Additionally, the administration's innovative approach, include but not limited to performance awards for excellence and strategic collaborations with Developmental partners which exemplifies a model that can inspire other states.

We commend the governor’s visionary leadership and the collective efforts of the Ministry of Primary Health Care staff, the robust Healthcare Development Fund and the initiatives to improve accessibility through social security and health insurance are commendable steps toward a healthier, more resilient Niger State.

His Achievements stem across, Maternal and child health, human resources for health Essential medicine and commodities,Etc.

Farmer Governor Umaru Bago officially inaugurated 20 Level 2 Primary Healthcare facilities across 16 Local Government Areas in Niger State.

In a speech delivered during the inauguration, Governor Bago highlighted the significance of this achievement as a milestone in his administration's efforts to transform healthcare delivery in the state. He reiterated the government's commitment to constructing a total of 100 healthcare facilities, with an additional 40 upcoming. To ensure sustainability, Governor Bago announced a monthly financial incentive of N5 million for facilities that demonstrate high maintenance standards and customer-friendly service delivery.

Governor Bago also announced the naming of the new facilities to honor significant figures: the Maitumbi Primary Healthcare Centre will be named after the late Hajiya Zainab Yakubu Garba, the center on Peter Sarki Road will honor the late Peter Sarki, and the one in Anguwan Daji will be named after his wife, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago.

Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, commended the projects as landmark achievements. He acknowledged the exceptional standards set for Level 2 Primary Healthcare in Niger State, underscoring their importance in advancing public health.

Abubakar Atiku Musa, the Deputy National Coordinator and Head of Monitoring and Evaluation of NG-CARES, noted that these healthcare centers are distinctive and will be adopted in the NG-CARES 2.0 initiative. This recognition emphasizes Niger State's pioneering efforts in healthcare delivery.

Mustapha Ndajiwo, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, who also chairs the NG-CARES steering committee, spoke about the alignment of this project with the New Niger Agenda. He emphasized the government's focus on prioritizing access to quality healthcare for communities to promote a healthier and more productive state.

Aisha Abdulkadir, General Manager of the CSDA, praised the successful ex*****on of the projects as a testament to collective efforts. She expressed gratitude to the farmer Governor and all contributors, announcing that the family of the late Sen. Idris Kuta, after whom one of the Primary Healthcare centers was named, plans to sponsor 100 community members to benefit from the Niger State Health Contributory Scheme (NiCARE).

In separate remarks, Commissioner for Rural and Community Development Phalalu Bako urged all stakeholders and benefiting communities to ensure the maintenance and sustainability of the new facilities.

A productive State Technical Committee meeting convened today, bringing together partners, program officers, and representatives from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to discuss preparations for the upcoming Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Week (MNCHW).

During the meeting, participants highlighted their commitment to support the MNCHW, outlining specific areas of collaboration and assistance to ensure the success of the initiative. This collective effort underscores the importance of a united approach to improving health outcomes in our communities.

Bashir Abdullahi Nakanti, representing the State Nutrition Officer, provided an insightful brief on the outcomes of the last MNCHW held in November-December. His presentation emphasized key learnings and areas for improvement, setting the stage for an even more effective program this time around.

Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure: Niger State Partners with Project C.U.R.E**

Today, the Honorable Commissioner of the Ministry of Primary Health Care, Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, alongside his Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Gana, conducted a health facility assessment at PHC Gwada in Shiroro and PHC Zubakpere in Paikoro LGA. This initiative is part of a strategic collaboration with Project C.U.R.E, a prominent U.S.-based nonprofit organization.

This week-long assessment involves a thorough evaluation of 20 healthcare facilities (15 primary and 5 secondary) across 12 Local Government Areas (LGAs), including Bida, Lavun, Mokwa, Lapai, Shiroro, Paikoro, Chanchaga, Kontagora, Rafi, Rijau, Suleja, and Tafa. The goal is to identify critical gaps in healthcare delivery and ensure that life-saving medical equipment and essential supplies are provided to the communities.

Project C.U.R.E, renowned for its humanitarian efforts, specializes in delivering medical aid to regions facing poverty, disasters, and conflict. Through this collaboration, Niger State aims to enhance the quality of care in its health facilities, ensuring timely and adequate medical support for patients.

Leading the initiative alongside Dr. Dangana and Dr. Gana are key members of the Niger State team, including Dr. Bello Tukur and Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, while the Project C.U.R.E delegation is represented by Babs Waldman and Bonnie Thomas.

This assessment marks a critical step towards sustainable healthcare improvement, aligning with the commitment of His Excellency, the Farmer Governor of Niger State, to provide accessible, equitable, and efficient medical services for all residents.

Advocating for Healthier Futures: Launch of Measles-Rubella Vaccine Advocacy Project

In a significant step towards improving public health, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has collaborated with the Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS) to launch the Measles-Rubella Vaccine Introduction Advocacy Project. The initiative is spearheaded by consultant Dr. Yahaya Isah Vasta and his dedicated team.

The project aims to tackle the persistent burden of measles and rubella in Nigeria by focusing on the following key objectives:

Raise Awareness: Educate communities on the vital benefits of measles and rubella vaccinations to guard against outbreaks.

Enhance Acceptance: Combat myths and misconceptions to foster a positive public perception of the MR vaccine.
Increase Vaccination Coverage**: Urge parents and caregivers to immunize their children to boost vaccination rates locally, nationally, and globally.

Strengthen Health Systems* Assist healthcare providers in delivering vaccination services efficiently.

Engage Stakeholders Build partnerships among governments, NGOs, and community leaders to promote vaccination and mobilize resources.

Monitor and Evaluate**: Continuously assess advocacy strategies and vaccination initiatives to meet community needs effectively.

During the introduction meeting, Dr. Yahaya Isah Vasta presented the project's framework to Commissioner Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dagana. Dr. Dagana underscored the urgent need for collaborative support across all levels of government, noting that the First Lady Hajiya Fatima Bago and His Excellency Governor Umaru Bago are fully committed to bolstering primary health care initiatives.
