Niger State Government Strengthens Commitment to Citizen Well-Being Through Healthcare Initiatives.
The Niger State Government has reiterated its commitment to enhancing measures that promote citizen well-being across the state.
During a recent address to journalists, Deputy Governor and Taskforce Committee Chairman Comrade Yakubu Garba emphasized the current administration's dedication to supporting and improving health measures. He made this statement following the third quarter meeting of the Primary Healthcare and Immunization Taskforce Committee held in Minna.
Represented by Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Dangana, Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, the Deputy Governor highlighted critical health sector challenges discussed during the meeting, including immunization campaigns and the upcoming introduction of measles-rubella vaccines in October. The ministry is training frontline healthcare workers to enhance service delivery and execute Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) with organizations like GAVI and UNICEF.
Comrade Garba noted that the administration, led by Governor Umar Muhammed Bago, is actively collaborating with UNICEF, WHO, and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) to combat a recent cholera outbreak. The formation of the state Emergency Response Disaster Preparedness Committee comprising relevant ministries and civil society organizations has facilitated the establishment of Cholera Treatment Centers in all 25 local government areas, providing free treatment and successfully containing the outbreak.
Despite over 200 admissions across treatment centers, only 14 casualties were reported, an outcome attributed to heightened media awareness and the proactive engagement of healthcare workers.
He also commended First Lady Hajiya Fatima Umar Bago for fostering stakeholder discussions aimed at raising awareness about health challenges in the state. He echoed her call for mothers, caregivers, and community leaders to embrace the vaccination initiative targeting young women aged 14 and below to combat the measles-rubella virus.
Attendees at the meeting include the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Nasiru Muhammed, ALGON Chairman, Commissioner, for Secondary and Tertiary Health, Dr. Bello Tukur, Commissioner for women affairs and social development, Hajiya T**i Auta, the Permanent Secretary Ministry for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Muhammed Gana, other development partners among others.
