Lower the risk of birth defects by up to 70%. Take 400 micrograms of folic acid each day during pregnancy!

Our bodies use folic acid to make new cells. During pregnancy, it helps to form your baby’s brain and spine. Taking at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily can help prevent major birth defects!

You can get folic acid by taking a prenatal vitamin or eating fortified foods such as certain breads, pastas, and cereals. Folate (the natural form of folic acid) can be found in leafy greens and other veggies, but it’s harder to get the recommended amount from food alone. Prenatal vitamins are the easiest way to get what you need!

Are you pregnant with no access to a prenatal vitamin? Let us know!

Calcium supplementation of at least 1 gram per day is recommended during pregnancy as it prevents pre-eclampsia where dietary calcium intake is low, especially for those at high risk,,,,

untreated preeclampsia can progress to eclampsia, a life-threatening situation for both mother and fetus characterized by coma and seizures.

Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
- originally called TOXEMIA . Pathophysiologic basis is vascular spasm leading to hypertension ( vascular effect ) , edema ( interstitial effect and proteinuria ( kidney effect )

📍 Mild preclampsia
° BP of 140/90 ( increase of 30/15)
° 1+ to 2+ proteinuria on random
° weight gain of 2lbs per week ( ²nd trimester) and 1lbs per week ( 3rd trimester)
° slight edema in upper extremities and face
--------- maybe managed at home -------

📍 Severe Preeclampsia
°BP of 160/110
° 3-4 proteinuria on random
° oliguria ( less than 500 ml/ 24 hrs
° cerebral or visual disturbances
° Epigastric pain
° pulmonary edema
° peripheral edema
° hepatic dysfunction

----------managed in the hospital--------

📍 Eclampsia
° hypertension
° proteinuria
° convulsions
° coma

🔴Death is from celebrate hemorrhage, circulatory collapse on renal failure

-------- obstetrical pregnancy ---------

💟Intervention/management

For Preeclampsia
* Assess BP in sitting and left lateral position protein level in urine ; changes in level of consciousness, weight , FHT , vaginal bleeding
* Bed rest ( aids is sodium excretion)
*Left lateral recumbent position
- to avoid uterine pressure on Vena Cava
* High protein diet
* Seizure precautions ( note headache, visual changes , dizziness and epigastric pain )

💟 For Eclampsia
* Maintain IV line
* Keep oxygen and airway equipment available at bedside also padded tongue depressor
* Maintain stimuli
* Medication as ordered ( magnesium sulfate va**um , apresoline )
* Side rails up and padded
* Aspiration precaution post ictal phase

The benefits of using low sodium salt in diet not just for people suffering from hypertension but as a lifestyle habit for all members in family.

After using for a month, I can say that there is no compromise on change of taste.

Having low sodium in diet is a positive change which can be made at family level very easily.

So I have made this small yet essential change for all my family members. Are you ready to make this change???

Vitamin G isn’t a term you’ll hear very much anymore. It’s actually an outdated name for riboflavin (also known as lactoflavin and vitamin B2), a micronutrient named for its intense gold color. The word riboflavin comes from “ribos” (a kind of sugar) and the Latin word “flavus” (which means yellow).

Riboflavin is an easily absorbed micronutrient that plays a key role in maintaining health in humans and animals. It is required for a wide variety of cellular processes and is very important in getting energy from the foods we eat.

Studies have shown that riboflavin may play a role in the prevention and/or treatment of iron-deficiency anemia, carpal tunnel syndrome, cataracts, migraines and rosacea (a skin disease). And recent research has found that riboflavin is one of three vitamins involved in the regulation of circadian (daily) rhythms, because it helps to activate some light-sensitive cells in the retina of the eye and synchronize our daily biological rhythms with the light.

Major role of Riboflavin Help - - -protect cells from oxygen damage
-Support cellular energy production
-Help maintain your supply of other B vitamin.

Deficiency of riboflavin
-Riboflavin deficiency results in poor growth and other changes in the skin,
eyes, liver and nerves.
- Deficiency generally causes eye-related problems in its early stages.

Sources of riboflavin
Excellent sources of riboflavin include:

Enriched whole grains
Mushrooms
Calf liver
Spinach and romaine lettuce
Asparagus
Mustard, collard and turnip greens
Broccoli
Venison
Eggs
Milk*
Only small amounts of riboflavin are lost in cooking, but riboflavin is easily destroyed when exposed to light. *Milk stored in glass and exposed to light loses much of its riboflavin content, so store your milk in opaque plastic jugs or paper cartons to protect the riboflavin in the milk.

Micelles help the body absorb lipid and fat soluble vitamins. They help the small intestine to absorb essential lipids and vitamins from the liver and gall bladder. They also carry complex lipids such as lecithin and lipid soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) to the small intestine. Without micelles, these vitamins will not be able to be absorbed into the body which will lead to serious complications. Micelles also help clean the skin. Many facial washes use micelles to perform this task. They clean the skin by removing oil and other substances without the need of being washed afterward.

Anemia is not only caused by Nutritional deficiencies such as iron, vitamin B12, and Folic acid deficiencies and supplementing nutrients have nothing to do in some anemic condition ...said by a young Doctor of Dietetics and nutrition science.. Abubakar Muhammad Hassan (Sir AH).

Sir AH explained that anemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or their oxygen - carrying capacity is insufficient to meet physiological needs, which vary by age, s*x, altitude, smoking and pregnancy status.

The WHO criteria for anemia as hemoglobin Hb levels less than 12g/100ml(1dl) in non pregnant women and
Less than 13g/100ml(1dl) in men (adult)

Anemia in pregnancy is defined as a hemoglobin concentration of less than 11g/dL.

Hemoglobin is a protein molecules in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs.

common causes of anemia apart from nutritional deficiencies
Here are the common causes of anemia

-Kidney failure
-bone marrow problems (replacement of bone marrow cells by cancer cells)
-suppression by red blood cells synthesis by chemotherapy drugs
-abnormal hemoglobin structure(sickle cells anemia, or thalassemia thalassemia).
-loss of blood (traumatic injury, surgery, bleeding,
-Loss of blood by(colon cancer, stomach ulcer).

Finally Sir AH concluded that anemia is a major public health problem concern.
