There is a high burden of communicable and non communicable diseases in Nigeria and other developing settings, therefore, accurate laboratory diagnosis is vital to ensure effective treatment. Before the advent of molecular biological methods for the detection and characterization of microorganisms, the identification of microorganism based on isolation, culture, and microscopy exist. Molecular Biology methods have become attractive due to their high specificity, sensitivity, and reduced turnaround time.
The deployment of molecular biology laboratory for the diagnosis and research in Nigeria faces myriad challenge such as a spacious structure to maintain a unidirectional workflow, cost of equipment and equipment certification, reagents, consumables as well as the dearth of skilled technical personnel to handle the equipment and procedures.
Samples from southeastern Nigeria are sent to Lagos and Abuja over the years for molecular diagnosis, making the cost of the tests very exorbitant because of the cost of courier and cold-chain. The Universities across south-east find it challenging or impossible to carry out researches on molecular because of non-availability of testing centers. At times, molecular specimens are sent to Keyan, the UK for students research works, for those who can foot the bill.
Despite these challenges, Accunalysis Diagnostic Center Ltd have procured most sophisticated Real-time PCR machines such as Magnetic Induction Cycle (MIC) and Life touch PCR; Gel Electrophoresis machine, manual and automated nucleic acid extractors, two Bio-safety cabinets (class 2), ultra-low freezers and other ancillary equipment to aid molecular diagnosis.
