Keeping an eye on your blood sugar levels is one of the greatest methods to manage diabetes. Even if you feel well, you still need to get checked out on a regular basis!

This is why regular health examinations are important: Diabetes can develop covertly, so it's important to detect it early.

A straightforward blood sugar test can identify changes early and help you manage the disease more effectively.

- **Prevent Complications**: Kidney problems, heart disease, and nerve damage are among the complications that high blood sugar can cause. Frequent testing aids in controlling these hazards.

**Peace of Mind**: Being aware of your health status provides incentive to maintain your health and peace of mind.

See a doctor in the vicinity or, if you have one, utilize a home test kit.

Check your blood sugar on a regular basis, just like you would your blood pressure. Have you lately had your blood sugar checked?

𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 – Let’s Get Moving!**

Exercise is a natural technique to manage blood sugar levels and improve overall health. Physical activity improves insulin sensitivity, which is beneficial for diabetes control.

Here are some basic methods to remain active in Nigeria: -

**Walking**: Whether you're taking a walk around your neighbourhood or going to the market, walking is a simple and effective approach to get moving.

- **Dancing**: Do you love Afrobeat or Fuji music? Turn on some music and dance at home for 20-30 minutes. Dancing increases your heart rate, burns calories, and improves your mood.

- **Household Chores**: Sweeping, mopping, and washing can all be beneficial physical exercises. They may not feel like exercise, but they make you move.

- **SPORTS**: Stay motivated by playing football, volleyball, or joining a local workout group. Aim for 30 minutes of activity most days of the week. It does not have to be intense; just consistent. What is your preferred way to remain active? Leave a comment below!

Adopting a Healthy Nigerian Diet for Diabetes**

One of the best strategies to manage diabetes is to eat a balanced diet.

The good news? With a few healthy adjustments, Nigerian cuisine can still be enjoyed!

Here's how to adapt your favourite recipes to accommodate people with diabetes:

**Select Whole Grains**: Brown or unpolished rice, which has a lower glycemic index and higher fibre, can help balance blood sugar levels.

**Portion Control**: Take a lesser portion of yam or eba and load your plate with veggies like spinach, ugu, or okra instead of a big chunk.

**Increase Fibre**: Fibre helps regulate blood sugar by slowing down the absorption of sugar. Incorporate leafy greens, lentils, and beans into your meals.

- **Select Lean Proteins**: Eat beans, salmon, and skinless chicken; these foods are high in protein and won't raise blood sugar levels.

**Restrict Sugar-filled Drinks**: Steer clear of sugary fruit juices, sodas, and malt beverages. Limit your intake to water, herbal teas, or water with a mild flavour. Little adjustments can have a significant impact.

Nigerian food may be tasty and diabetes-friendly, so eating healthily doesn't have to be dull!

Which nutritious Nigerian meal is your favourite? Tell us!

𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 & 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 – 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗴𝘀**

Sometimes persons with diabetes are unaware that they have the disease until it has progressed. Although early symptoms may appear innocuous, it's crucial to be aware of these indicators:

**𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁**: Even after eating, you experience hunger and thirst more frequently than normal.

- **𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐔𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧**: Increasing the frequency of your bathroom visits, particularly at night, may be a sign that your body is attempting to eliminate extra sugar.

- **𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐬**: Weight loss without effort? When combined with other symptoms, it may indicate diabetes.

**𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞**: Constant fatigue is a common but often ignored symptom.

- **𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧**: Vision issues may result from high blood sugar.

Serious problems could arise if these symptoms are ignored. Do not hesitate to seek a blood sugar test if you or a loved one exhibits these symptoms. In order to manage diabetes and prevent consequences like renal damage or blindness, early detection can be crucial. Take control of your health!

𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 –

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘀 𝗜𝘁?

Diabetes is a lifelong disorder that alters the way your body converts food into energy.

When we eat, our bodies convert food into glucose (a form of sugar), which enters the bloodstream. Insulin, a pancreatic hormone, contributes to the conversion of sugar into energy.

However, with diabetes, your body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot use it as well as it should, resulting in high blood sugar.

Diabetes is on the rise in Nigeria as a result of lifestyle changes, genetics, and a lack of awareness. It is possible for both children and adults to develop it.

There are two primary types: -

**𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀**: It usually starts in young people and occurs when the body is unable to manufacture insulin. -

**𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝟮 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀**: The most frequent variety in Nigeria, often associated with lifestyle factors, in which the body is unable to use insulin effectively.

Understanding diabetes is the first step in managing it.

Over the next few posts, we'll look at symptoms, management strategies, and how to stay healthy. Let us take charge and work together to make Nigeria healthier!
