"Accurate blood pressure measurement is key to the prevention , diagnosis and treatment of hypertension. The theme for this year's World Hypertension Day "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately. Control It. Live Longer," emphasizes the importance of correct readings. Learn the best practices for assessing blood pressure and take control of your health:

TIPS TO GET AN ACCURATE BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENT

With just one or two simple errors when measuring blood pressure, an individual could suddenly find himself/herself classified as having hypertension while he/she is having normal/healthy blood pressure. Below are the tips to avoid errors in blood pressure measurement:

1. Empty your bladder before measurement. Full bladder can add between 10-15 mm Hg to a measurement
2. Do not smoke, exercise, drink caffeinated beverages or alcohol 30 minutes before measurement
3. Rest in a chair at least 5 minutes with your left arm resting comfortably on a flat surface at heart level
4. Be relaxed. Sit calmly in a chair with your feet flat on the floor, your back straight and supported
5. Properly calibrated instrument and appropriate cuff size should be used. Using a wrong sized cuff can add between 2-10 mm Hg to a measurement
6. The bottom of the cuff should be placed above the bend of the elbow on a bare arm
7. The cuff should not be placed over clothing. Depending on the size of the sleeve, clothing can add up to 50 mm Hg to a reading. So roll up your sleeve or go to your healthcare provider with short sleeves
8. Sit calmly and do not engage in any conversation. Even active listening can add up to 10 mm Hg
9. Do not keep your legs crossed. Crossing legs can add between 5-10 mm Hg to a measurement
10. Do not check your blood pressure early in the morning or immediately after you wake up. Blood pressure is always the highest in the morning
11. If you are on medications, check your blood pressure before taking your medications
12. Check your blood pressure more than once before making a conclusion on whether it is high or not

Today is World Hypertension Day, 2025. The theme for this year is "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!"
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 1.28 billion adults aged 30 to 79 worldwide have high blood pressure, yet nearly half of them are unaware about it.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is when the pressure in the blood vessels is too high (140/90 mmHg or higher).

The first step in understanding high blood pressure is learning what the readings mean. Blood pressure is measured with two numbers: systolic (the higher number) and diastolic (the lower number) (e.g., 120/80 mmHg i.e systolic reading/diastolic reading):

Systolic pressure occurs when your heart contracts.
Diastolic pressure occurs when your heart relaxes and fills with blood.
Blood pressure is measured using millimetres of mercury (mmHg), which is a standardized measurement of pressure.

Five categories define blood pressure readings for adults:

Healthy: A healthy blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg

Elevated: The systolic number is between 120/80 and 129/80 mm Hg

Stage 1 hypertension: Between 130/80 and 139 /89 mm Hg

Stage 2 hypertension: 140/90 mm Hg or higher

Hypertensive crisis: Over 180/120 mm Hg. Blood pressure in this range requires urgent medical attention.

The cause of hypertension is unknown but it has some risk factors. Factors that increase the risk of having high blood pressure include:

👉older age
👉genetics
👉being overweight or obese
👉not being physically active/living a sedentary lifestyle
👉high-salt foods
✍️drinking too much alcohol
✍️ smoking or use of to***co
✍️low intake of fruits and vegetables
✍️ eating foods high in saturated fat and trans fats
✍️other diseases e.g diabetes, kidney problems

SYMPTOMS

Most people with hypertension do not feel any symptoms and that is why hypotension is also called 'Silent Killer'. Very high blood pressures can cause headaches, blurred vision, chest pain and other symptoms.

Checking the blood pressure regularly by a health professional is the best way to know if someone has high blood pressure. If hypertension is not detected and treated early, it can cause other health conditions like kidney disease, heart disease and stroke.

People with very high blood pressure can experience symptoms like:

✍️severe headaches
✍️chest pain
✍️dizziness
👉difficulty in breathing
✍️nausea
✍️vomiting
✍️blurred vision or other vision changes
✍️anxiety
✍️confusion
✍️buzzing in the ears
✍️nosebleeds
✍️abnormal heart rhythm

TREATMENTS

Lifestyle changes can help lower high blood pressure. These include:

👉eating healthily (low-salt and low fat diets)
👉losing weight
👉being physically active
👉quitting to***co and alcohol

One or more medications called antihypertensives may also be recommended.

PREVENTION

These lifestyle changes can help prevent and lower high blood pressure:

✏️Eat more vegetables and fruits.
✏️Sit less and be more physically active, which can include walking, running, swimming, dancing or activities that build strength, like lifting weights.
✏️Get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity.
Do strength building exercises 2 or more days each week.
✏️Lose weight if you are overweight or obese.
✏️Take medications as prescribed by your health care professional.
✏️Keep appointments with your health care professional.

Do not:

👉eat too much salty food
👉eat foods high in saturated or trans fats
👉smoke or use to***co
👉drink too much alcohol
👉miss or share medication.

You can also prevent hypertension by:

✍️reducing and managing stress
✍️regularly checking your blood pressure
✍️treating high blood pressure
✍️managing other medical conditions
