A Tearful Surprise: FUHSTHO Staff Shower Professor Agida with Love on His Special Day

In a heartwarming display of affection and appreciation, the staff of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo (FUHSTHO) surprised their Chief Medical Director, Professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida, with a surprise birthday celebration that left him visibly moved to tears.

As Professor Agida walked into the celebration, he was met with a sea of smiling faces, music, and joy that filled the room. Senator Abba Moro's bill seeking the establishment of Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo, Teaching Hospital passes Second Reading

The University Teaching Hospitals Amendment Act Bill being sponsored by the senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Moro PhD, on Tuesday, passed Second Reading on the floor of the senate.

The bill, which is seeking to amend the University Teaching Hospitals Act to establish the Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo, Teaching Hospital was read the first time on October 8.

While presenting the lead debate on the bill, Senator Moro said the sole purpose of the bill was to amend the University Teaching Hospitals Act to include the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo Teaching Hospital and urged his colleagues to support its Second Reading.

The lead debate read;

"Mr. President, Distinguished Colleagues, may I seek your kind leave to lead a debate on this very important Bill.

"The Bill was read for the first time in this revered chamber on the 8th of October, 2025.

"The one and sole purpose of this Bill is to amend the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Board, etc) Act to include the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo Teaching Hospital which is already in existence and operational.

"Mr. President, Distinguished Colleagues, as we are aware, the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, is a premier institution dedicated to training healthcare professionals in Benue State and Nigeria by extension, the university's mission is to produce highly skilled and competent medical practitioners who can serve the healthcare needs of our nation.

"Mr. President, Distinguished Colleagues, The National Health Act, 2014, Section 10, establishes the framework for teaching hospitals in Nigeria. Specifically, Section 10(1) states that "A teaching hospital shall be established by an Act of the National Assembly, this implies that without an Act of the National Assembly, a teaching hospital does not have the legal backing to operate, thus the reason for this Bill.

"Mr. President, My Dear Colleagues, I urge you all to support this Bill and pass it accordingly.

"Thank you for your kind audience."

In their separate contributions, Senators Victor Umeh and Oyelola Yisa Ashiru lent their supports for the Second Reading of the bill. They said it was timely and straight forward, especially as it concerns health.

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, after securing the nod of all senators in plenary for the Second Reading of the bill, commended Senator Moro for his people-oriented bills and motions. He said health was wealth, stating that any effort to improve the health sector and bring it closer to the people would be supported.

The bill was passed and referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Secondary and Tertiary Institutions, to report back in four weeks.

FUHSTHO EMBARKS ON AMBITIOUS DRUGS PROCUREMENT TO BOLSTER HEALTHCARE DELIVERY.

The Chief Medical Director Federal University of Health ScienceTeaching Hospital Otukpo Professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida IION returned back to duty on November 18, 2025, after a week- long official duty in Abuja.

However, he had inspected the newly acquired drugs and medical consumables for the hospital, including snake bite venom antidotes and rabies vaccines to enhance the hospital's pharmaceutical store and improve healthcare delivery in the facility.

The drugs are part of the hospital's effort to bolster its healthcare delivery particularly in the area of medical supplies.

The CMD who was accompanied by the Head of procurement, Adakole Oche, who praised professor Agida's leadership in drugs procurement, stating that the hospital is now among the top -notch in terms of medical supplies.

Moreso, professor Agida in his remarks emphasized that drugs and medical consumables procurement is crucial to delivering exceptional medical services and creating optimal healthcare delivery.

He urged the pharmacy Department to maintain the culture of excellence in administering drugs procured transparently.

The development marks a new era for the pharmaceutical Department of FUHSTHO, underscoring the institution's dedication to elevating the healthcare landscape in the region.

FUHSTHO Boosts Maternal Healthcare with Ultrasound Training Program

The Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo, (FUHSTHO), Benue State, Nigeria, recently inaugurated a training program on Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) on November 17, 2025. The event, held at the conference hall of Rena, aimed to enhance the skills of healthcare professionals in using ultrasound technology to improve patient care.

In his inaugural speech, the Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHO Otukpo, Professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida, represented by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Augustine Ogwuche, welcomed participants and expressed gratitude to the CEO of UVO Foundation for donating equipment and providing resource facilitators for the training. Dr. Ogwuche emphasized the importance of the program in reducing maternal mortality rates in the region and urged participants to pay close attention to the training and share their knowledge with others.

FUHSTHO STAFF RECEIVE CONFIRMATION LETTERS PRAISE CMD'S EFFORTS.

The Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo has witnessed another noticeable development with the issuance of confirmation letters to it's 2023 staff.

This significant approach has sparked widespread appreciation for the Chief Medical Director professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida IION.

Earlier, the Ag. Administration, Adjei Ochekpe had issue a circular urging the 2023 staff to collect their confirmation letters, the circular broadcasted on the hospital's social media platform, marked the beginning of the letter distribution process.

in a statement, some staff members who requested anonymity expressed their gratitude to professor Agida a renowned Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology for his tireless efforts in ensuring the expeditious approval and dissemination of their confirmation letters.

It will be recalled, a confirmation letter is a vital document that validates a staff members appointment, emolument and job details providing a sense of security and protecting employee's entitlements.

In reaction, the Chief Medical Director professor Agida urged the staff members to put in their best to work to attract more benefits, the CMD who is sensitive to the ongoing nationwide strike embarked on by National Association of Resident Doctors NARD hopes the doctors resolve the situation with the Federal Government soon describing the last two weeks as a difficult moments for healthcare seekers.

The development has boosted the morale of the staff who are now looking forward to contributing to the growth and development of FUHSTHO.

FUHSTHO Staff Celebrate Timely Salary Payment, Laud CMD's Dedication.

Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo, earlier witnessed a moment of jubilation as staff members newly captured celebrated the successful payment of their October salaries.

Many staff members expressed their appreciation for the Chief Medical Director, Professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida (IION), for his efforts in ensuring timely payment, describing it as a rare achievement in the institution's history.

This development follows a significant milestone achieved after the staff audit conducted by the Federal ministry of Health which led to the capture of Locum staff and some June, 2025 recruits who previously had issues accessing their salaries.

The audit which created a pathway for these staff members to be integrated into the system was a welcome relief for many.

Professor Agida expressed his satisfaction with the successful payment process emphasizing that every labourer deserves their wages, he urged the newly recruited staff to demonstrate commitment to their duties highlighting the importance of their roles in promoting healthcare delivery and making a positive impact in the community.

Accountant Edoh Onwu, a newly recruited staff member from the account department, and youths leader from Ikobi community Otukpo commended the CMD for his appointment and thanked him for alleviating the stress associated with recruitment benefits.

He attributed his appointment to the CMD's fairness and impartiality in the recruitment process which he believes reflects the true spirit of inclusiveness.

They hailed professor Agida for persuading IPPIS for timely payment of salaries, the development underscores the hospital's commitment to staff welfare and dedication to creating a positive work environment.

The CMD's leadership was highly praised for it's transparency and support to the welfare of the staff.

FUHSTHO INAUGURATES INFECTIONS PREVENTION and CONTROL COMMITTEE, PLEDGES ENHANCED HEALTHCARE DELIVERY.

The Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo marks a notable step towards enhancing healthcare excellence and safety with the inauguration of its Infection Prevention and Control committee (IPC).

The event themed " Hand - washing" was held at the hospital's conference hall and drew prominent figures from the Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo, including professor Stephen Abah and professor Ogwuche provost College of medicine FUSHO.

The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders especially Professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida IION, the Chief Medical Director who reiterated the hospital's commitment to mitigating the spread of infectious diseases.

The IPC committee chaired by Dr. Adah Emmanuel Otache, consultant public health physician was tasked with promoting stringent infection Control measures, bio Harzard waste management, Sharps disposal management and hygiene practice within and outside the hospital.

A highlight of the event was a practical demonstration of proper hand-washing techniques by Professor Oyemoicho, IPC focal person Benue was enthusiastically replicated by participants.

in his remarks professor Oyemoicho emphasized the critical role of hand washing hygiene in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, he revealed that the AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria (APIN) had expressed interest in funding the program with potential plans to support the production of antiseptic products in the hospital under the technical guidance of Oyemoicho.

Professor Agida in his statement commended the IPC team and facilators for their efforts and assured them of his unwavering support, he advocated for regular seminars every last Wednesday of the month to educate health workers and the public on hand washing and other vital health topic.

The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Augustine Ogwuche underscored the importance of adopting regular hand washing habit among healthcare workers, patients and the general public, he thanked participants for their active engagement and called for sustained efforts to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.

The following individuals were inaugurated as members of IPC committee:
Dr. Adah Emmanuel Otache (Chairman), Professor Audu Oyemoicho (Vice Chairman), Dr. Chuwak Sally, Emmanuel Fanan, Ogwuche Julius, Adaji Esther, Adaji Sunday, Mathew Onoja and Ngbede Paul.
