FUHSTHO Hosts Successful "Mother-Daughter Day" to Promote Health and Prevent Cervical Cancer.
The Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo (FUHSTHO), today 18th October, 2025, played host to a special Mother-Daughter Day, dedicated to promoting health and preventing cervical cancer. The event, held at the Antenatal Clinic Complex, brought together mothers and daughters for a day of vaccination, screening, and health education.
During the event, girls aged 9-14 years received the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, while mothers underwent cervical cancer screening using the modern Evelyn Brush technology. This innovative method allows for early detection of HPV infections, providing a crucial step towards preventing cervical cancer.
The Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHO, Prof. Teddy Eyaofun Agida (IION), who also served as the Site Coordinator for the "For Girls and Women" initiative, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Ejeh Paul Ogwuche, for his unwavering support and dedication to the program's success.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of preventive health measures, particularly in tackling diseases that threaten women's lives. "This program is about love, protection, and prevention," he stated. "By bringing mothers and daughters together, we are building a future where no woman should die from a preventable disease like cervical cancer."
The event featured health education sessions, interactive discussions, and on-site registration for follow-up screening and vaccination schedules. Participants described the Mother-Daughter Day as both enlightening and life-saving, providing families with the opportunity to take concrete steps toward a cervical cancer-free future in Benue State and beyond.
Prof. Agida commended the impressive turnout and participation, attributing the success to the power of community engagement and the importance of prioritizing women's health. "Let's continue to empower our girls and women with knowledge, love, and protection," he urged.
The collaboration between the Teaching Hospital and the office of the Commissioner of Health, Benue State, to host Mother-Daughter Day initiative is a total demonstration of commitment to promoting health and well-being in the community, particularly among women and girls. By providing access to life-saving vaccinations and screenings, the hospital is helping to build a healthier, more empowered future for generations to come.
