Food to avoid in the first trimester 1. Pineapple :;- this contains bromelain which softenes the cervix and start untimely labour contractions resulting in miscarriage, when consumed in large amount it causes bleeding.
2. Crabs ::- Although crabs are a rich source of calcium, they also contain high level of cholesterol, this can cause shrinkage of the uterus and lead to internal bleeding and miscarriage.
3. Sesame seed ::- this should be consumed in a minimal amount, sesame seed whether the black or white variety, when consumed along with honey can cause trouble during early pregnancy.
4. Animal liver ;;- if consumed in large quantities by pregnant women, eating this promotes a gradual accumulation of retinol which may adversely affect the baby's health.
5. Pawpaw:- unripe and green papaya have components that acts as lexatives and bring on premature labour, papaya seeds have enzymes that cause contraction of the uterus, resulting to miscarriage.
6. Drumsticks:- this comprises of alpha-sitosterol which is detrimental to pregnancy, as drumstick is rich in iron and calcium it can be eaten in limited quantity.
7. Raw diary product:- unpasteurized milk and cheese like Gorgonzola, mozzarella, feta, and brie possess diesese carrying bacteria, which can be harmful to pregnancy.
8. Caffeine:- caffeine in moderation is safe during pregnancy, but it's advisable to observe some restraint as increase in intake of caffeine can cause underweight of baby and lead to miscarriage.
9. Mercury rich fish:- Avoid varieties having high Mercury content like king mackerel, orange roughly, Marlin, shark, tilefish, and sword fish. Excessive Mercury intake can adversely affect the baby's developing brain and nervous system.
10 Herbs:- herbs containing steriod can adversely affect the baby's growth during pregnancy.
11. Peaches:- if consumed in large quantities during pregnancy can produce excessive heat in the body and lead to internal bleeding.
12. Alcohol:- this negatively impacts the Brain development of the foetus at the same time it's increases the chances of miscarriage and still birth
Maintaing a balanced diet is essential during pregnancy. Anything eating excessively can be harmful.
