Today is the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

HISTORY

•At the International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held in Vienna on June 26, 1987, it was recommended that a day should be observed to commemorate the struggle against drug abuse. The United Nations General Assembly on December 7, 1987, decided to observe June 26 as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

•The theme for this year is "People First: stop stigma and Discrimination, strengthen Prevention," which aims to raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy; providing evidence-based, voluntary services for all; offering alternatives to punishment; prioritizing prevention.

•The day is recognised to highlight the health challenges related to drug abuse and encourage combating measures like prevention, education, treatment, and rehabilitation.

8 FACTS you should know

•Whole potatoes eaten with skin is good, it adds more fibre grain in our diet.

•Avoid the Teflon non-stick cookware sets, the materials used in coating is carcinogenic

•Microwaves have been found to cause "Stress Syndrome", use occasionally only.

•It is best to eat vegetables soon after harvesting as the nutrients are easily lost. That's why it is best for you to grow your own vegetable, it's the surest way to get the most nutritional value.

•Remember the four nutrient robbers -> air, water, heat, and light. It is best to buy or pick your daily requirement or what you can use in few days and this should be kept cool and away from light and air.

•Fruits taken first in the morning can help to detoxify the body.

•Do not drink water with meals, the best time to to drink water is in the morning before breakfast and in between meals, at least half an hour before and after eating. If you feel thirsty during a meal, then there maybe too much salt in the food.

•Continous use of cabbage for a long time can have antithyroid effects which may lead to goiter

LET'S TALK ABOUT NUTRITION AND ITS NATURE

There is a truism that says "nature is the real meat for health". As a public health administrator, I am interested in the mechanisms involved in diet and the various ways our foods have been denatured and robbed of their life-giving properties.

There are reports that most people all over the world are having their arteries clogged and an increasing number are having heart-related diseases and obesity in the ages. This unhealthy situation has been attributed to unhealthy eating habits, diets low in fibre and lack of exercise. That is the main reason why we should return to nature and use the abundant plant and animal resources which God, in His infinite wisdom has provided for the benefit of man both as food and as medicine.

Nutrients are substances which, when taken into the body help sustain life. Nutrients include proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. They are vital for life and growth of the body.
