TODAY'S TOPICS IS COLOSTRUM
What is colostrum?
Colostrum is a sticky yellow fluid secreted by the breast during second half or mid pregnancy around 12 to 18 weeks and for a few days after birth, before breast milk come in.
It is high in protective antibodies that boost the new born baby's immune system. It also has a laxative like properties that helps pass meconium and fight jaundice.
STAGES OF BREAST MILK COMPOSITION STAGE ONE💥: COLOSTRUM, It is a yellowish sticky milk, thick and protects your baby from infection. It is high in antibodies and white blood cells and is very important for the digestive system.
After 2-4 days, COLOSTRUM is replaced with Transitional milk.
STAGE TWO💥: TRANSITIONAL MILK, It is creamy and has high level of protein, vitamins and fat. At this stage, color of the milk changes from yellow to white.
After 5-14 days after birth it changes into Mature milk.
STAGE THREE💥: MATURE MILK, Mature milk starts from 14 days after birth and above until the baby is weighed. The color is lighter.
Mature milk is divided into 💥TWO TYPES 💥
1⃣ FORE MILK: It is thinner and appears more like skim milk. It is watery and quenches baby thirst.
2⃣ HIND MILK: It is milk that flows as the breast empties, it is higher in fat, calories, and quenches baby hungry. Both Fore or Hind Milk will give your baby all the essential nutrients required for the growth.
As the baby grows older and is introduced to solid food and liquids, the nutrients and most of milk produce will change.
