Diary of a struggling village corper: outreach/CDS day
We had been planning and raising funds for this outreach for a couple of months now and finally we were able to do it. We started off the day by meeting at local government council and then trekking all the way to the school. It was a long and tiring trek but we made it.
We introduced ourselves to the headmistress/principal, it was a quick and brief meeting because our group leader works in the school and had notified them prior to our arrival.
We gathered up the students from JS 1 to 3 and Christiana started of the health talk with hygiene and sexual abstinence, we shared pen for the boys and ushered them out of the class. Then we had a girls gist with the girls. We also included to senior class girls as most of them were not present.
I went to give a talk on menstruation and hygiene. We had a Q & A section and shared pad for the lovely girls. Then we took some pictures with the students and then ourselves. It was an interesting experience and the students were nothing short of amazing and well trained.
Although, I had concluded with Christy that I won't give a lecture (personally, because I didn't feel confident and prepared) but when we got there, we concluded that as the only medical person in our group, I was supposed to talk. Eventually, the impromptu lecture helped me cement the idea that I could do anything I set my mind.
We concluded by treating ourselves to cold drinks and snacks ☺️.
