THE FAKE STORY ABOUT 73,000 HIV INFECTED YOUNG WOMEN IN IMO STATE

I don’t know how this fake story that was circulating on Facebook two years ago is being recycled on this erudite platform at this particular time. This is the second time in the past 24 hours that this same fake story attributed to one Noel Chiagorom is appearing on this platform. Please note that this same fake story circulating on Facebook had previously been attributed to at least two other individuals in the past two years ago when it first appeared.

A little fact-checking on the story reveals that the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri never issued any statement to the effect that 73,000 young women have tested positive for HIV/AIDS in Imo State. If this story were true, then it will have a serious public health implication not just for Owerri, but the entire Imo State. Just for the sake of curiosity, how come no credible print or electronic media in Nigeria carried this important news item? Also, why were the names of the so-called “epidemiologist” at FMC Owerri or the “Executive Director” of an unnamed civil service organisation quoted in the story were somehow not disclosed?

The whole idea of the hatchet-job fake story is to revive the old, hackneyed beer parlour joke of portraying Owerri as a red-light district at most or a city of easy virtues at worst, where anyone can get an easy lay without even waiting to exchange pleasantries. This time, the lies and the joke fell flat on their face.
