As the sun set over the bustling streets of our hometown, I ran into an old friend, we attended the same school though she is my junior and hail from my town. She had just returned home after completing her Ordinary National Diploma (OND) programme at the local polytechnic.
Her family and friends had gathered to celebrate her achievement, but Nneoma's mind was elsewhere. She had always dreamed of furthering her education, of pursuing a degree and making a name for herself in her chosen field.
But as she looked around the room, she felt a sense of restlessness. She knew that her parents, though well-meaning, would not be able to afford the tuition fees for a university programme. And besides, she had already heard the whispers and warnings from her relatives and neighbors - "Why bother with more education? You're a woman, you'll just get married and have children anyway."
Nneoma felt a surge of frustration and determination. She knew that she was capable of more, that she had a spark within her that refused to be extinguished. And so, with a newfound sense of resolve, she stood up and announced to her family and friends, "I'm done with my studies."
The room fell silent, with everyone looking at her in surprise and confusion. But Nneoma just smiled, knowing that she had made a decision that would change the course of her life forever. She was ready to take on the world, to pursue her dreams and make a name for herself, no matter what obstacles lay ahead.
