Ịgafe Afọ Ọhụrụ: A Crossover Prayer FOR 31st NIGHT
As the old year slowly returns to the womb of time and a new one prepares to emerge, we stand, just like our ancestors did, at the sacred threshold between what has been and what will be.
In Igbo cosmology, this moment is a liminal space (oghere dị n’etiti), a powerful gateway where we honour the past, acknowledge the forces that guide creation, and speak blessings into the future.
Tonight, we lift our hearts in reverence:
Prayer of Gratitude (Ekene Chineke na Ndiichie)
“Chineke, Great Source of Life, we thank You for preserving us.
To our ancestors who walked before us, ndiichie, we honour your wisdom and the paths you cleared.
For every blessing, protection, and lesson of the past year, we say daalụ.”
Prayer for Cleansing (Ịkụcha Obi na Mmụọ)
“As we stand at the doorway of a new year, may all negative energies, setbacks, and burdens fall away.
May our hearts be cleansed, our spirits renewed, and our path purified.
Let the light of Chi Ukwu wash over us and make us whole.”
Prayer for Alignment With One’s Chi (Ịkekọrịta na Chi Onye)
“In this new year, may we walk in harmony with our Chi, the divine spark placed in us.
Let our efforts align with destiny; let the work of our hands prosper.
May we hear the whisper of guidance and follow the direction of our inner light.”
Prayer for Protection (Nchedo Si N'aka Chineke)
“Great Spirit who guards the four corners of the earth, South (Ọwụwa Anyanwụ), North (Ukalaba), East (Ọwụwa), and West (Ọdịda Anyanwụ)
surround us with safety.
No harm shall befall us, our families, or our land.
May our steps be guided and our nights peaceful.”
Prayer for Community & Prosperity (Ọganihu na Udo)
“In the new year, may our homes flourish, our farms yield plenty, our businesses thrive, and our communities live in unity.
Let peace (udo) reign in our households.
Let harmony flow like the rivers that nourish Ala.”
Prayer to Ala (The Earth Mother)
“Ala, bearer of life and sustainer of balance, we honour your grounding presence.
May we walk gently, speak truthfully, work diligently, and live justly upon your surface.
Bless our land, our harvest, and our footsteps.”
Final Crossover Declaration (Ikwu Okwu Afọ Ọhụrụ)
“As we cross into the new year, we step into:
Clarity
Strength
Abundance
Good health
Peace of mind
Enlightenment
Divine alignment
Family harmony
Our Chi goes before us.
Our ancestors watch over us.
Chineke blesses our journey.
Ala grounds our feet.
Afọ Ọhụrụ a ga-abụ nke ọma.
Ife ọma ga-agba anyị gburugburu.
